Run on PC or Steam?

I just started with the demo version which runs on my PC. I'm interested in buying the game but want to understand if the game runs off of Steam or is it resident on my PC? I'm Steam averse!

You can get it without Steam - you might have to wait a bit longer for patches, updates and such that way though.
