SEASON 10 Race 4 MELBOURNE INCIDENT REPORT

I have to admit the guys towards the back are still too keen to let the lapping cars past, Vale jumped into the wall to let me past when I wasn't all that close or in a particular hurry to go through, followed by Kurt (I think?) slowed down as we approached fast left-right, though he did move off line to the left, again I wasn't very close and we could have gone through that section easily, the next straight/RH corner would have been much safer

was my fault Jim with fingers i touch the paddle and downshift in 1st gear but was not my intention smash the wall:D we was in straight easy place, usually I look a better place for both but there is blue flag and after 3 time the game give a black flag.:)
 
No incidents to report.

For the lapping I think its best if on straight and movement for either car to show intention, when I was following Valter in that vid I was on inside incase he lifted to let by and getting closer to turn I thought you would then wait till after chicane so I went to follow through, was a surprise at that point but managed to go inside in time.
I think the main straight t2 to t3, before and after fast chicane are best spots for lapping we could maybe make up something like zones where we would lapping to happen safest in track thread each race.

Something perhaps like this with the red zones and we can stick to these zones only for lapping or we could go fully other route and make it more of a competitive pass to lap then you know that there will be no slowing etc to let by but im not sure if this would maybe lead to more incidents though.

I presonnally prefer this idea, should not be a tough task for the leader to overtake a lapper.

My opinion is a lapper should NEVER slow down on the racing line. If its easy for him, like on a long straight, to go out off line to let easy pass on leader thats fine. But really no need to hurry, just think that the other guy never know your intentions.

Here is an example of a car that slow ON the racing line. I expected bob to wait for the start-finish straight to let me by, or to move right, but he slows down right at the exit of the turn, on the racing line. I was lucky to react fast enough to avoid an accident.

If everybody read this this thread, it should be easier to know how to do it for the rest of the season. :)

 
I agree with Steeve that lapped cars should never slow down on the racing line, if lapping car is right behind them. Most of our incidents, while lapping have resulted from lapped cars slowing down unexpectedly on the racing line. I think the main rule for lapped car should be to continue racing normally with normal speed. Primarily initiative for the overtaking should then come from the lapping car, who will make the overtake in the first safe place. It is easy to evaluate safe place for overtake as long as the car in front does everything predictably. I think lapped cars should only slow down, if lapping car is close, but not immediately on tail, and both cars are approaching a succession of corners, where overtaking is difficult. In this case it is wise to go off racing line and slow down a little to let lapping cars pass. One example of this kind of section is at Monaco, in the short straight between Casino and Mirabeau corners, which are followed by several tight corners with no good place to overtake before tunnel. In a circuit like Albert Park at Melbourne, there are no such places. So, I think here lapped cars can just drive their own race, try to stay aware when lappers are behind them, and make overtaking easy after lapping car has made initiative.

What if lapped cars are having an intense battle, while lapping car is right behind them? I think they should freeze the situation so that not try to overtake each other when lapping car is right behind. After the lapping car has overtaken both they can continue their fight.
 
I thought it was already agreed last season that lapped cars stay on the racing line until they can safely let faster car pass or the faster driver passes them. ie, you stay on racing line until a straight comes, faster car makes the move to pass and then slower driver can react by slowing down. In that order. I remember leaving racing line on straight but the lapping car wanted a tow (this was way worse before lapping rules were defined) and there was no way of slowing down before braking zone causing a bit hairy situation. Going wide on turns to let people pass is really good way to not lose time as you get a good exit speed and can get a tow but you need to have the lapping car on your tail for several corners. You can't go wide right after the lapping car first becomes close, it's too soon and can be mistaken as a mistake.
 
i know this is bringing things back up but better that i try analyse the incident as much as possible so that i dont make the same mistake again, i had a clear idea in my head of what i wanted to do in the situation, it didnt go quite as planned obviously with the contact but ive managed to find something that shows my intentions (minus contact)......


as you can see hulk left minimal room, coulthard was of the opinion that the move was firm but fair, hulk managed to pull the pass without contact, i didnt, but it shows exactly what i was trying to do in that situation, next time, i'll definatly leave more room on the outside :)
 
About the Marko vs David incident and that video :
As I see it, Marko passed David on braking, but in the turn exit it's not so sure who is in front, and I consider the 2 pilots are side to side. David gained the racing line at the end of his braking, in contrary to Marko who was a little outide, so David had a small advantage. Yes he should have left a little more room then, because Marko was side to side with him, and because there's a kerb on this turn (in order to be fair with the pilot that tries to overtake you).
On the Kimi/Hulk video, no one can say that Kimi passed Hulk so the situation is clearer, and you can only reproach Hulk to be dangerous, since he knew that Kimi was just behind but in his blind spot, but it was the only way for him to preserve his place for a few moments.
