Would You Rather...

A little game of 'Would you rather' but with a sim racing and motorsport twist.

OK, I don't think it would be a massive stretch to assume the vast majority of the audience here at RaceDepartment are motorsport fans - after all a love of real cars is probably what sent you down the sim racing rabbit hole in the first place. So, with our collective love of real racing vs our love of virtual motorsport, I'd like to know which option you would pick given the choice...

Would you rather....

Race as a paid esports driver for a year with a top team (paid as in the equivalent to a full time job salary)...

or..

Race for a fully paid season in a real world national championship. (no pay, but having all costs covered).

Id alwqys chose the real thing over simracing, uts just something else

No brainer really Personally I'm not really interested in E sports , I see enough grown men playing videogames already on a daily base lol. Also sim racing is nice, but it doesn't compare to the actual real life experience of racing a car.

I wouldn't sully the sanctity of sim racing by bringing financial reimbursement into the equation. So I'd have no choice but to take the less glamorous real world gig.

This is it, isn't it? Esports and I get money, or IRL but I get no money (but costs are covered). IRL that you pay is pretty much accessible to anyone if they have the money.

If you mean, also no costs covered, that would make no sense.^^ (Because that's status quo for most of us here )

The thing is if you do sim racing it's because you love racing, and if you do it at a competitive level it's because you dream/hope this will land you a seat in a real race car. It's not really a fair question honestly. "Simulator" means something that tries to get as close as possible to the real thing, but it's not quite the real thing. Would you prefer to be paid to play Flight Simulator or fly a real airplane for nothing?

Reality is the thing you make memories from. I've had some fun playing sims but nothing beats the thrill of reality.

Just note that simracing is trying to be as close as possible to real life, so no contest here tbf.

I've been on track with folks who are OK at handling their cars. I'm old and not a thrill-seeker. I would much rather be a paid eSports driver. I realize that puts me well in the minority here, but I have to be honest with myself on this.

heck I'd be the catch can man if they'd let me
I knew 25 years or so ago, sim racing would be my only chance. but it's pretty cool seeing how far this little hobby has come and look forward to where it's going.
