2021 Formula One Dutch Grand Prix

2021 Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix RaceReporter.jpg
Formula One is back on track for the second week in a row, this time taking on the Zandvoort circuit for the first time since 1985.

It’s been 36 years since Formula 1 cars raced at Zandvoort. The last time a field of F1 cars raced here for the Dutch Grand Prix, names like Prost, Senna and Mansell took part, and Martin Brundle was in a race car rather than a broadcast booth.

F1 is back to the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend, hoping to put forth an exciting race after a disappointing Belgian Grand Prix. The race at Spa Francorchamps was effectively cancelled due to heavy rain, though the decision was made to run the minimum number of laps required behind a safety car to have the Belgian event classified as a race.

The Zandvoort circuit was updated in 2019 to accommodate F1’s return in 2020. The 2020 race was cancelled, but this year the updated circuit includes the dramatic banking of the Arie Luyendijk corner. The corner was understood to be sufficiently banked to allow DRS, though the decision has since been made to not allow DRS through this corner.

Max Verstappen took pole and the win at Spa Francorchamps, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton claiming the other two podium spots. The controversial points awarded for the Belgian Grand Prix narrowed the drivers' championship to just three points.

A win at his home race would put Verstappen back in the lead of the drivers' standings, and Dutch fans will be out in huge numbers to cheer on that result. His teammate Sergio Perez will be looking to return to form after an accident at Spa happened before he could even get to his grid spot left him out of the points. Thankfully Valtteri Bottas also finished outside of the points at Spa, so the constructors’ championship is still a tight battle with Mercedes holding a seven point lead.

The layout of the Zandvoort circuit likely won’t allow for much overtaking, and the weather is predicted to be mainly sunny for the weekend, so the pole sitter will be a heavy favourite to maintain his lead until the end of the race.

No penalty for overtaking under red flags... what a surprise

This event becomes a bigger and bigger joke...
It would have been more dangerous to go full brake, not to overtake the very slow driving car in front of Max. Red flag was deployed some meters before the other car.
It's just teams nitpicking to the stewards, trying to discredit each other and gain advantages.

Q3
Toto: Lewis p2! we got close on a few thousands of a second.
Wow great result... thanks you for the whole team effort and the Dutch fans, bla bla bla...

Bit later in the pitlane...
Euhm, Lewis,
Max his DRS was not working, we can still expect a gap for tomorrow.
Nein, Nein, Nein!!!

I guess Perez position shows how "superior" the Red Bull car is. As in, not superior at all. I am not even a fan, but clearly Max made, and is making all the difference, because i actually rate Perez.
Perez position was down to the fact that RB sent him out too late for his second run. I wouldn't have expected Perez to be up front as Max is clearly on a streak performance wise, but he atleast could have been in the mix to give Mercedes some trouble. I have no idea why stuff like this still happens to a team challenging for the title, but it's obvious that this could become critical tomorrow to stretch strategies.

Wolff, Hamilton Will be strong in the race, he knows this track, be won the Marlboro masters ? Who did’nt

It is touching to see Hamilton making such an effort to please the Dutch fans with his compliments and orange clothing.

I guess the damage has already been done. The fans are not buying his act.

Or maybe...just maybe...he's being civil and the "fans" are acting juvenile?

Dude was the first to advocate for fans to get their money back...but only when guys like Vettel say it, it's taken with any weight...because Hamilton is always the devil. He's never spoken negatively towards any fans and yet, even advocating for the same orange army and everyone at Spa to get refunded, they all meet him with boos and toxicity at Zandvoort...it's seriously no matter what he says or does; Everything is an "act" with Hamilton, but Kimi, Seb and Max are the only "sincere" ones in F1. Wow.

Yesterday and also today a vast majority of the race fans also cheered for Lewis. Yep we (as in most of the Dutchies) want to see Max win on his home GrandPrix but we still know when to show respect to an extraordinary 7x world champ (well at least the most of us do)

No surprises front row, but props to gazly.

I guess this qualifying shows mercedes why they need georgina handbags instead of botass next year hey :roflmao:

Interesting qualifying session, but I'm afraid we'll get plenty of safety cars periods, maybe even some red flags. There's no room to pass and that's a recipe for contacts. If you are recording the race, make sure to program an extra hour on your DVR! ;)

With Georg in the Merc it will be the same boring story it has been the last 7 seasons...not relishing that. Current tension is only possible because Merc has one shitty driver and one in his decline up against possibly the most talented driver ever - and I am saying that as á German Schumi fan (the old one). When they get Russel who is possibly the second/third best driver on the grid, it will be same ol boring Merc domination

Hmmm, Lando didn't do so well today. Admittedly he was denied a final attempt at Q2 due to Latifi binning it, but even so he was well off the pace today.

I hope his incident in Spa hasn't affected him too much.

Yes indeed George is the third most talented driver on the grid after Max and Lando, I cannot wait till the day Max en George are fighting for the championship and Toto ask Lewis to led George pass in the last lap.

I allways find it interesting how different people come to their conclusion in terms of rating drivers and their talent. In the case of George Russel for example, it's pretty obvious that he has incredible speed, especialy over one lap. In terms of race craft I am not that sure. Considering how Leclerc played cat and mouse with Max at Silverstone a couple of years ago, I would clearly rate Charles above George.

As a dutch f1 fan from 1994 untill now.

Its 50/50 love it because the netherlands got a gp

But on the other hand, this track even with the modifications is not a nowdays f1 track.
It's kinda something I've been thinking about when watching the F3 races: This track is kinda what classic race fans have been asking for. It's a track with racing history (even if some of that history is drivers burning to death whilst the track had no facilities to actually deal with fires), a track that is very clearly loved by the audience, and a track that relies a lot on old-school methods of enforcing track limits - ie, there's almost no tarmac runoff and especially not in areas where the FIA has to get their calculators out and figure out if a driver gained an advantage. There's a lot of gravel and grass that just instantly punishes the clumsy or reckless driver.

You know, a throwback to the 80s where Roughly half the cars don't make it to the finish line and where only four drivers are on the lead lap at the end (and that's just the final race at zandvoort before this one, there's some rather brutal attrition going on throughout that season and across the circuit'ss history). I have a strong suspicion that that's the kind of race we're going to see tomorrow and I have this niggling suspicion that for the older fans (or those who glorify the "old days" without having ever seen them) it's simply not going to be as good as everyone remembers it being.

The attrition in the 80's was mainly due to mechanical failures and the level of the back of the grid. Now there are reliable cars, pro drivers and teams don't take too much risk (Mazepin has less crashes than Senna...). In the cristal ball I see a procession rather than anything else.
However recently there were good races on tracks that were labelled "non suitable to modern F1", like Mugello or Imola. So maybe it will not be boring.

<Murray>and there's Mansell pitting from the lead...why? he has to change the color of his tire! And Piquet???What is Piquet up to? He's sitting in the pits because he ran wide? Bless me whatever is happening today? Arnoux seems to have found some pace, no, no he hasn't....those Red cars can fool you. ....

Yeah. it's just not the same any more.

So maybe it will not be boring.
Anything is possible, but given the quality of racing in the support races so far this weekend, I can't say I'm overly hopeful. There's likely to be a little in the way of passing and clashing in the mid-pack, but I don't expect much change in the top five or six.

If you have a good exit at Audi-S and can follow up close, with DRS, all the way to T1 you can pull off an overtake, of course. This is the obvious choice and expectation. But I don't think Tarzan(bocht) is the only place to try for a pass. A good exit from Hugenholtz and close follow up through Scheivlak can end up in an overtake at Renault. Formula 3 showed some unexpected action. Of course F1 cars are and behave differently, but I think the track will deliver more excitement than many people expect. Let's hope it does! :coffee:

The worst possible outcome today is a race unduly decided by luck. I'm no Max or RB fan, but if they're the best package this weekend (as seems likely), they deserve to win. I really dislike it when random unrelated incidents at critical time bring out a safety car or red flag and decide GPs (like Monza last year), and it feels like the risk is especially high at Zandvoort.

Don't get me wrong, reacting quickly and correctly to these incidents is part of the sport and if a particular driver/team does a better job faced with the same circumstances then they deserve success. It's when they don't all face the same circumstances that it's problematic.

Monza 2020 was an extreme example as half the field who had qualified well and raced best had pit (because teams generally give the lead driver priority) and then the red flag just gave the rest a free pit stop and track position.

Perhaps I'm old school but I'd rather have a procession won by a driver i don't particularly care for than have random nonsense influence what should be a close competitive Championship. We had enough of that last week.

So, Hamiltone has offered some "gift" to Belgians last week for paying for nothing.
Now if Verstap and georgina handbags also do the right thing (seriously doubt it), fans will all be compensated for that joke last week
