Audi and Porsche could be on their way to Formula One. There’s news circulating online that Volkswagen will give the go ahead for the two manufacturers to enter the spear point of motor racing. There’s also been an announcement that Las Vegas will host a Grand Prix from 2023 - this will be the third race in the USA, joining Texas and Miami.
”We will hopefully be able to communicate our intention to enter into Formula One then,” one of the sources said, with the second adding there was a ”good chance” of a positive decision.
Volkswagen declined to comment. The news was first reported by Business Insider.
There has been talk of Audi and Porsche forming partnerships with existing Formula One teams for a long while now, their most likely method of entry into the highest class of international racing.
It is regarded by many that Audi will buy out McLaren and Porsche are set to strike a long-term partnership with Red Bull.
A source told Reuters in November that Volkswagen’s ultimate decision will rest on whether Formula One follows through on its plans to switch to synthetic fuels by 2026, and on McLaren’s progress regarding electrification of its vehicles.
F1 president Stefano Domenicali said: "This is an incredible moment for F1 that demonstrates the huge appeal and growth of our sport with a third race in the US."
There will be three main straights and 14 corners, which will include a single chicane section and a sequence of high speed corners.
The race will be promoted in partnership with some of the major casino and hotel groups in the city, including; Caesars Palace, Wynn Las Vegas, MGM and the Venetian.
