Your ACC Car Choice Matters - But Not The Way You Might Think

Your ACC Car Choice Matters - But Not The Way You Might Think.jpg
The car roster of Assetto Corsa Competizione offers a great amount of choice for the GT3 afficionado: Different engine layouts and characteristics make it possible for everyone to find a good match in theory - and yet, even public lobbies are usually filled with the same two to three cars that are supposed to be the fastest at that point of BOP adjustments. However, a lot of drivers might leave their potential unfulfilled as a result.

As of version 1.8.11, an abundance of McLaren 720S GT3s and BMW M4 GT3s can be spotted on ACC's tracks. The two vehicles are acknowledged to be the fastest across all tracks, and because of that, players tend to flock to them, resulting in timing sheets leaving the impression of a two-make championship. This tends to change with major BOP updates - for a while, the Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo and the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo were in much of the same position as the McLaren and the BMW are now.

While it may be easy to set relatively competitive lap times, ACC drivers might leave precious tenths on the line that way. The cars may be the fastest among the sim's roster, but extracting the small advantages of their performance is something only top-level drivers are able to do on a regular basis. As a result, many drivers could be faster in other cars that suit their driving style and skill much more.

Of course, this is always a very individual element - everyone has a different way to throw a virtual race car around a circuit. It might be worth your while to revisit cars you used to drive a lot, but do not anymore. Recently, after running the Porsche 911 II GT3 R for months and the Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo as well as the Aston Martin AMR V8 Vantage for a few endurance events, I figured I might give the 2018 Nissan GT-R GT3 a spin again, as I had mained the car for a year and a half.

This choice might seem counterintuitive, especially considering that the Nissan is not run anymore in GTWC and rarely in other GT3 series, due to it not being very competitive anymore. And if you were planning to enter a high-profile event or series as a top-level esports racer, you would probably be at a disadvantage against the best of the best. However, as I soon figured out, the car suits me very well somehow, and even though its understeery characteristics have not really gotten any better, I was able to set faster lap times than I had set with the other aforementioned cars immediately. It was also possible for me to push like I rarely had been able to with the other cars - meaning I felt right at home again. It will not be easy to find team mates to run an endurance race with the GT-R - the turbo brick seems to be a bit of an acquired taste.

While this experience is very subjective, of course, it is very likely that there are tons of ACC drivers who are doing well enough in one of the current "meta" cars but are missing out on a more competitive and more fun experience. There is truth to the rule of thumb that feeling comfortable in a car is the most important thing to do well in endurance racing. I recommend giving your old favorites another try and see how you stack up against the McLaren and BMW armada. You might rediscover something you did not know you missed.

my favourite car in ACC is the V12 Vantage. why? because V12. I always was a V12 fan and it's a shame that GT3 don't have more V12 cars. I loved the 2000-2011 GT1 era because there was loads of V12 (Ferrari 550, 575, Lister Storm, Maserati MC12, Aston Martin DBR9 and, my absolute favourite, Murciélago R-GT and, less favourite but favourite nonetheless, the Murciélago R-SV) and the fact that the V12 Vantage was the only V12 in GT3 makes it feel sad for me(heck, I would've even mained the DBRS9 if we had it in the game. god, that sound)

I tried to love the Ferrari being myself Italian, but then I kind of fell in love with the Porsche and never left. I am not the fastest guy around so I just focus on enjoying the experience and the Porsche is usually quite intense to drive. It's not even the most beautiful Porsche racecar, but for sure it is different.

I don't have a meta and I don't have a favorite either. I like to try and drive them all.

Recently, I've started using the "Wheel of names" random picker website to pick a car for each race. A random car that might or might not suit me, that I have driven or might not even thought of doing so.
This is how I make the game fun as ACC specifically is a bit of a rigid serious game.

First race, in the NoobGamerz ACC season 12 night races, the "Wheel of names" picked me the original 2015 Nissan GT-R which I've never seen anyone drive. Luckily it was at Monza and that car is damn fast in the straights! I managed to qualify in P7 and finish the race on Podium in P3!

That was fun and different. Next race the "Wheel of names" picked me the Lexus and that's gonna be around Nurburgring. Please like and subscribe if you want to see how the remaining races go :)

720s and Lambo, just love the driver's position in VR. Every now and then I'll jump in the Lexus just for the sound or if it's Monza I'll take the Jag for backend fun.

I totally understand that extracting the small advantages of the meta car's performance is something that only pros are able to do regularly but let's be honest here, a more casual driver will also be able to set more competitive laps using a meta car than using any other car if they take the time to learn said vehicle.

I don't really play ACC that much but ever since I switched to the M4 GT3 I regularly get podiums and race wins, something I was not able to do that much using other cars. On top of getting better results, it was nice to change things up and learn another car.

In the end, the most important thing IMO is to take your time to learn the car you wanna drive and test all the options so you can find the one that helps you get better results, be it a meta car or not.

I tend to love the underdog cars. Until recently my go to was the Jaguar.

To me it feels like a car that hates you, but as the Drill-Sergeant said : "The more you hate me the more you will learn", and I've learned to love it. Just a shame it didn't get as much love from the devs since it ain't part of the championship anymore.

Now I am struggling to find a car I truly love to drive, tried the usual, M4, Audi, McLaren, Bentley but they just don't stick for me, they feel too safe, 2 seconds a-lap faster, but too forgiving; Still looking for the car that I will fear out of respect for what it can do if I overstep its limits.

When I finally purchased ACC, I gravitated directly to the Acura/Honda NSX since it was missing from the rF2 GT3 carsets.(of course so was the Lexus & Lambo...) I haven't done enough testing to know if others are better or worse.
