EA Sports WRC Central European Rally Preview: Where Are We?

The next EA Sports WRC update is due on December 14, including the new Central European Rally. We had the chance to get a preview for the new location – which comes with a bit of a geographical surprise.

The penultimate round of the 2023 World Rally Championship calendar featured an all-new event. Drivers and teams headed to the “Dreiländereck” (literally three-country corner, meaning the border region) of Germany, Czechia and Austria. Stages took place in all three countries, all of them on tarmac.

For EA Sports WRC, Codemasters had to pick one of the countries, however. As usual, one long stage got split up into multiple shorter ones with some variation to create 12 stages in total. CER in EA Sports WRC is based in Czechia, though it is not quite clear where exactly.

Central European Rally in EA Sports WRC Going Eastward?

Due to the location of the real event, the Czech stages took place in the West of the country. However, the in-game stage names are those of towns in the East of the country, not too far from the Slovakian border. Coincidentally, the Barum Czech Rally Zlin, which is part of the European Rally Championship calendar, has been held there. A Reddit thread suggests that these stages could have been used as a base, though with variations.

You’d likely be waiting for the bus for quite a while here. Also note how the sign is in German despite supposedly being in Czechia.

Meanwhile, Game Designer and real-life rally racer Jon Armstrong claims in the SPIN Rally Podcast that the location the developers chose “is actually based in the Czech Republic in the region where the rally was in that country.” It is possible that the visuals match the real location more closely than the names – and stage routes – possibly suggest.

Where Are We, Then?

Either way, Armstrong is happy with the result. According to the Northern Irishman, who actually competed in the Barum Czech Rally Zlin, CER in EA Sports WRC captures the real World Championship event well.

I’m really pleased what we chose to represent is exactly what you see in real life. Gives you that same feeling and experience. It’s a 32-kilometer stretch of stages in forward and reverse direction. It’s a location that has jumps on tarmac, which is something we don’t really have in other locations.
Jon Armstrong, EA Sports WRC Game Designer and real-life rally driver

Despite this, with two of the hosting countries being German-speaking, there are some interesting signs to be found at the stages. For one, the bus stop signs inside towns and villages read “Bushaltestelle”. And in addition to that, some German road signs point to Austrian locations – so where exactly are we?

German road signs pointing to Austrian locations – in Czechia?

Wondering about the location aside, the new rally in EA Sports WRC actually turned out quite well. Its tarmac roads wind their way through the landscape, passing through small towns and villages on the way. Make no mistake, though, the Central European Rally is certainly no tight and twisty affair. Instead, you will often find your car exceeding 200 kph while hanging on for dear life inside a forest – in a Rally1 car, that is.

Running the rally in autumn and with wet conditions comes relatively close to the real event. Colorful trees, leaves on the road, barns to crash into – they are all there. Similarly to other locations, however, it does not seem like the leaves actually have an impact on the car’s handling. There are still enough treacherous things like bumps, jumps, and ditches to catch drivers out.

EA Sports WRC Central European Rally Stage List

  • Rouské – 32.36 km (100% Tarmac)
  • Lukoveček – 32.34 km (100% Tarmac)

  • Chvalčov – 16.94 km (100% Tarmac)
  • Vítová – 8.77 km (100% Tarmac)

Central European Rally: Fast, Flowing & Massively Enjoyable

While the two long stages are amongst the longest in EA Sports WRC at over 32 kilometers each, they tend to fly by. Only Chile’s 34+ kilometer stages are longer. In one of our test runs, it took less than 18 minutes to finish one of the long CER stages. Turns are often faster than they seem just from the pace notes, so expect a lot of full-throttle running.

As a result, opting for a much longer gear ratio compared to the default setup is advisable to maximize top speed. Additionally, an aggressive throttle setting for hybrid deployment will help to make the most of the available boost.

Update Brings More Fixes, Season 2 Starts December 19

The update to v1.4.0 not only contains the new location, but also further performance fixes. EA Sports WRC did run at higher framerates than before in the preview version even without turning down some graphics settings. Meanwhile, the stuttering when running a location for the first time were still present, however.

As part of the update, bugs regarding saved setups and control schemes have been fixed. Ahead of its December 14 launch, EA and Codemasters had announced that this would reset all setups and control bindings, so make sure to screenshot or write down yours before you update EA Sports WRC.

More patience is needed for further unlockables becoming available. Season 2 of the Rally Pass will start on December 19, promising further decals, livery designs, and moments to complete.

I've watched the videos on my phone, so I may have missed some details, but this looks much better than the videos from the current version. The lightning seems better, no clippin. Not super smooth on Jardier's config (watch the left and right edges) but not deal breaking imo. If the other stages receive the same polish, the game will be good. Still, the shaders issue has to be dealt with asap and VR implement1tion is going to require more optimisation. Still no excuse for that terrible launch, it should have been announced as an early access (but I assume it would be awckward for an official game release), but at least something is on the way.

You have plenty of choice for quiet low prices, especially at the end of the year. It depends on what you are expecting from a game.

Imo not any of them is pefect but, globally, after tweaking the wheel settings (Kylotonn's games have that weird issue with my wheel, the angle of rotation of the cars's wheels does not adapt to the wheel angle of rotation, so I have to set 360° in the game and the cars drive properly) and the FFB settings (just put the wheel autocenter to 0 in Kyltonn's games or you won't feel anything in your wheel), they all feel pretty similar with more or less details. If you're new into the genre, and not sure you're going to like it, just go the cheapest way.

Well, better to go with the second cheapest way because the free RBR through Rallysimfans isn't a modern experience and can be frustrating. A amazing option to keep in mind for later. Great driving, outdated graphics (but not bad) and UI, tons of content, and VR.

- if you want more than rally, V Rally 4 (himlclimb, rallycross, buggies...) and Dirt 4 (rallycross, formula zirt...) are good options. Borh include a track generator, V Rally 4 being the best for that job.

- if you want VR (and I must say that I became much better at rally thanks to VR), Dirt Rally 1.0 and 2.0 are the way to go. After some testing lately, DR1.0 feels a bit harder and detailed but it may be absolutely artificial (the tarmac lack of grip is its main flaw, but it is still enjoyable). In terms of content I don't know if DR2.0 has more than DR1.0, I assume it does, but Dirt Rally 1.0 includes Pike Peaks, just watch the link to the video postes there to get the idea. Nor sure DR1.0 is still in stores though.

- if you need official WRC content, WRC Generations or this new EA sport WRC game should be good options but you can find the complete WRC Generations for around 10 euros.
I must admit the WRC career mode in WRC Generations is well done.

NB : I've been staying away from Kylotonn's games for years, due to the usual bashing and was absolutely and positively surprised when I tried V Rally 4 (remember, 360° wheel rotation and no autocenter). For those who want Hillclimb, V Rally 4 is a nice option.
That looks like a load of fun! Never really thought to try V Rally 4 but that looks great.

Unless you have a real life rally driver on here, that's going to be a difficult one and will just be personal preference of the person responding.
A WRC junior driver drove his real life car in the game and is impressed by how everything behave how it should, very naturally. He's also a DR2.0 player and consider WRC to be a big improvement (telling it's way more precise, way closer to real life). I don't know if the auto subtitles will help.

i was expecting stuttering was fixed after this patch, i bought game until release, so this is the last time i buy a game before, next time i´ll wait a few months after release, maybe some companies don´t treat us like idiots.
Still a lot of things to be fixed in this project EA WRC rally game:
-You cannot training on snow, summer or any other season, just dry or wet
-You cannot create a championship through EA site like Dirt 2.0, you have to enter on game
-If you use a handbrake, on the start the car freezes and you cannot begin stage correctly
-You cannot make a multiclass championship, did EA know WRC has multiple car class?
-Always crash or get out from road you suffer just a penalty of 30s, not very real
-You can crash against a wall your tyres are made of iron, rare or difficult have a tyre puncture
-Damage on your radiator? no problem your water boils at 300º
Sorry but still Dirt 2.0 is better and run smoother than WRC23, so this is sad to EA and for all rally players, maybe it was more interesting a DLC for Dirt2.0 called WRC2023 than release a game with this kind of quality

Good decision. It's never too late to learn this lesson.

FANTASTIC update!
Small hiccups on start and meeting obstacles are gone, playing through the long Acropolis rally stages without single even slightest stutter. Absolutely butter smooth.
Auto selection for transmission type works like a charm. And issues with Fanatec SQ shifter are fixed too.
Games looks incredible, and FFB and physics are the best I've been getting from any rally sim before. Need to rush to leave positive review on Steam.
Good job Codies, well done.

I went back and tried DR1 in VR other day. Immediate uninstall. But hey, only another 10 months until the hype starts for WRC24 at $70. Enjoy. lol

It's already started gaining more active users than the predecessor, reviews are getting better too with "Mostly Positive".
I had very few non critical issues to begin with and now even they are gone, happy like a clam.
Please don't gnash your teeth, if it doesn't work for you, there are plenty of other great games to play, like AMS2 for instance.

Ian, Ea Wrc should have 4x more users than dirt rally 2...
Dirt rally 2.0 has 88% general rating, EA WRC has 73% general rating (4% less and it's the famous yellow mediocre note).

Thank you to purchase the game and beta test for us, I will buy next year a better game.

And you think it started with this rating, go check reviews history. It was almost 50% negative at the beginning. Nothing is released in the perfect state this day.
And EA WRC is surprisingly bump free ride.
And yes, you can always wait for another year and buy a better polished version on sale.
BTW, what Ian has to do with Codies WRC, did you confuse studios or engines? :O_o:

EDIT: BTW, this is how things looked like for the 6 months after DR 2.0 release. Hardly 4x more than DR 1.0

I have named you Ian bell, cause the way you describe EA WRC feels unatural and lies like Ian bell

What did I do, officer?
I have tested the new patch, still stutters and micro freezes, refunded again, I will wait for the fix : Ea WRC 24, next year.
Thanks for beta testing the game for me.

edit : want to play dirt rally 2.0 rallycross with me ?

I suspect you started racing before shaders finished compilation. It happens on start, but they did not add any visual indication of things working in the background. The only culprit is heavy working GPU fan. I was greeted with stuttering at first too, restarted, waited a while, relaunched career and "bam", butter smooth play with about 5-10 fps extra comparing to 1.3.
