F1 22 | Physics Deep-Dive Video Released

F1 22 is scheduled to be released on the 1st of July, and Codemasters has released a video which gives fans a chance to learn more about the underlying physics of the title.

Senior game designer David Greco voiced a video released on the official YouTube channel of Codemasters F1 Games that gave us a technical deep-dive into the physics and handling behind the upcoming F1 22 game.

Greco spoke about how the new FIA regulations for F1, and the cars that resulted from the updated regulations, affected the game design and physics approach versus recent editions of the title.

Among the changes are a reduced ride height for the vehicles. Bottoming-out effects, how the cars take curbs, and aerodynamic effects were affected in kind.

When asked if the new handling and physics design could introduce scenarios that were previously unseen in the F1 series, Greco mentioned that it is now possible to "beach" the car on a sausage curb. He noted it would be a rare circumstance, but the new, lower ride height makes this a possibility.

Stiffer tire carcasses will also play a factor in the new F1 game, and players can expect sharper slip angle, more possibility of understeer, and staccato force feedback forces from taking curbs aggressively. This will introduce setup challenges as well, as tire pressures will affect the handling in a different manner than recent installments of the F1 game.

These handling and physics changes will also affect legacy setups. If you were hoping to copy your 2021 setup into this year's edition, you likely won't find much success.

The video concluded with tips for beginners, which you can listen to by watching the video linked above. There are also a lot of points covered by Greco that I did not include in this article, so be sure to give the video a watch if you're interested in the physics that will be implemented into this year's F1 title.

Let us know in the comments or on Twitter @RaceDepartment if any of these physics and handling changes have you excited to try the title when it is released on July 1st.

Would love proper sim handling in the F1 games :)
When you take the F1 games for what they are then they're "sim-enough". Sometimes it's not just about the purity of the driving simulation, it's also about the immersion the games produce to make you believe you are actually in a race, and the F1 games do that very well indeed.

I mostly play ACC, which is well respected in terms of physics, and I have no problem driving and enjoying the F1 games - in fact the feeling of immersion provided by competing in an F1 weekend together with the best in class AI makes the F1 series better racing games IMO.

As this years release has VR then it's a must buy for me - hell I'm probably even going to commit a sin and preorder it.

For me the direction they have been heading towards in the last couple of releases have been great, the cars might not be the most advanced simulated one can find on the market, but they are not that far off. They also feel decent enough through a wheel. The game as a package in my opinion is the best offline F1 racing experience overall currently all things considered. Very much looking forward to F1 22.

Note to myself: I should really start a career mode, not just single races. I say it to myself every year, but now I officially posted it on a forum so I have to :D

I know they're pretty quick but the best engineers and designers design cars which are not only the quickest in the world but also the easiest to handle in the world at that speed. They should not be difficult to drive at all. But the limitation should be your reaction speed. I have heard so many real drivers say that sims are harder than the real thing.

with proper sim handling I think 80-90% of the peopel will realize they can't drive these cars and it will be the end of the franchise
I'll bet you can take an average driver and stick them in an F1 car and within one month of training they'll be doing times of around 95% of what the top drivers do - basically 5-6 seconds off the pace.

They are not difficult in themselves to drive, in fact they are designed to be relatively easy to drive with regards their required function, otherwise we would see far far more offs than we do. It's the skill of the driver that ekes out the performance of the car at the limit, not the car eking out the performance of the driver at the limit (although that may admittedly go hand in hand)

F1 cars, and all race cars, have to be controllable otherwise they don't finish, regardless of the driver at the wheel.

yes! There's a good video of this on youtube by Drive61. We can all do it, but fear will stop 99% of us from going even half on that throttle.

Did you check out that f1 manager? I want everything to look like that and to be able to drive it. That is my f1 dream game that I will never probably play. :(
We’ll see how good that F1 manager is when it’s released on August 30… :D

I am super excited for the next installment of this series. Personally I play it every year and can't wait to try VR on my G2. That said I take this series for what it is. I find the feedback on my DD1 quite good and perhaps that's because fanatec sponsors the F1 esport series. That said the depth offered through seasons and my team is unmatched in my opinion to any other current racing games. To me this exponentially improves the experience and can make some of it's deficiencies easier to look past. All racing games come with some compromise and being a single player racer myself, this game checks all the boxes especially with the addition of VR finally. I would like if they add official triple monitor support but there are other means around that for now.

This, in fact with the physical training and some seat time one could say that you can probably drive the F1 car better than on the sim because there is so much more sensation that tells you how the car behaves, feeling the G forces and using your body to feel the minute details about how your tyres are reacting to the road when you are driving. But of course, courage is another thing that one might or might not have abundance of.

After watching the video, I am expecting F1 '22 to make games like ACC, AMS2, and rf2 seem like Mario kart. In addition, am I expecting teams like Williams, to give up on their current simulators and switch to F1 '22. I did notice Latifi was running P2 in the demo. That must account for something.
