GTR Revival: New Logo & First Screenshot Unveiled

Having gotten the developer core of the GTR series back together, Straigth4 Studios is working on a new sim that should follow in the - certainly enormous - footsteps of both previous titles in the series. Now, the very first in-engine screenshot is available, courtesy of Studio Head Ian Bell, in addition to a logo for the project.

GTR and GTR2 have set new standards for endurance racing simulations in the mid-2000s, and GTR Revival wants to expand on this legacy: AI-based commentary and race engineers, varied content and a partnership with Reiza Studios seem like promising cornerstones for most of the team that had also worked on the original titles.

Not too much about GTR Revival was shown thus far, apart from detailed info on Straight4's personnel and their plans. Bell had promised to show in-engine footage soon on Twitter this week, and he delivered just a day later.

In it, the cockpit of an Audi R8 LMS GT3 (presumably the Evo II version, as it is the most recent one) is visible, entering the S do Senna at Interlagos - likely a nod to Reiza's involvement with Straight4. The screenshot shows off detailed visuals and interesting lighting with what looks like rain clouds rolling in over the Brazilian circuit.

GTR Revival is not another title in the line of GT3 simulators, though, as the Straight4 team has expressed its desire to create different content from throughout the years of racing history as well, and it could also mean the return of the car and track rosters of the previous GTR titles.

New Tire Model Coming​

Bell also confirmed the development of a new tire model for the title: The Seta model, which is rooted in the Madness engine Bell and his former team at Slightly Mad Studios created, will receive a successor called Seta 2 for GTR Revival. Seta had recently been the focus of Reiza's in Automobilista 2, as the Brazilians had discovered that remnants of the old ISI-based engine interfered with Seta to cause undesirable handling, resulting in the big improvements of the recent v1.5 update.


GTR Revival does not have a fixed release date yet, but Straight4 is aiming for a launch in late 2024.

I said I hope 100% that it breaks rF2, I want the next level, to move on.

If that's not optimistic I don't know what is.
You're reading into to things too much. I was not labelling you, just talking about myself.
 
If I'm not mistaken they used the ISI engine as the base (so that wasn't from scratch either) and most likely already save them a few years of development. My guess is they are re-using much of the code they already have and improving on it... not a bad thing... honestly if they had replaced the trash FFB in PC2 with the one in rF2 it would have been an perfect sim. But lets face it ... a year for a scratch made engine is proable stretching the truth. Just marketing hype on his part.
At the end of the day doesn't really mater as long the end product is great. The issue with these guys is we had PC, PC2, PC3... AMS2 and it's all the same $%^.... .so you can't blame us for being skeptical.

25 years ago Epic games made Unreal right ? I think something like that .
They had the vison to realize if they did it right they could pull heaps of studios to it.
Unity and Unreal have majority of titles ? just 2 engines.
Thing is they are 100's of games that all need to accomplish 100 different things.

We only need one engine that does law of physics.

You can't tell me that the brightest minds in sim engines could not come together and do the same.

Yes it may take 25 years so we better get a move on.

Indeed, probably saved them a lot of time at first. 10-20 years later, that legacy code might cause trouble and slow down developpement, so I'm glad that it's gone now.

Well, the Madness Engine is EA property now. Don't think they managed to save their right to the engine like they did back in 2011. If that's right, using any code from the Madness Engine could get them in legal trouble.

Depends on deal they made with Reiza before it got sold. There could be be the loophole in there. You got admit creating a new engine in 1/10th of the time doesn't sound too realistic unless you have 10x more cash to throw at it than MSG burned through in the last few months :) ... And then there is issue of time which money alone can't solve . Also any new code would take far longer to test than using per-existing thoroughly tested libraries.

I doubt the deal with Reiza could help in anyway, I very much doubt Reiza has any right to sell their code to anyone.
Kunos seems to have done a great job with Unreal Engine 4 for ACC in about 4 years with a small team. Kunos also did build their own engine insanely fast for AC1. Straight4 Studios seems to be already much bigger than Kunos was at the time. I get that 2 years seems really tight, because it is, but if Ian managed to hire experienced and competent coders, it doesn't seem impossible to me. There's also the possibility that they'll push the release date further to polish stuff. That said, SMS wasn't exactly known for releasing polished games, so who knows.

Well, go drive a GT3 car in AMS2, then try that same car in AC,ACC,iracing,rF2 ... its been 3 years since Reiza started exorcizing PCARS crap from their game and they still cant make it consistent across the board... some slower cars feel good, dirt also, but the fast ones still feel completely wrong... at least for me ...ofc, Seta may be an engineering feat..but the end result is crap !

Not a fan of GT3 cars myself, But do enjoy them to some degree in AMS 2. To the point I uninstalled ACC, Not because its a poor representation (I have no real world basis to define that as I can only relate it back to real world footage of other people driving these cars and using that as a guideline with multiple unknown variables, it would take a fool to issue a judgment when they are so close in visual behaviour) but because I find the AMS 2 driving experience and scope more enjoyable and immersive.

The man says right there in the tweet that the game will have a new physics engine from the ground up...
tbh i came to not trust this "from the ground up" coming from devs.
if you look at the upcoming forza motorsport, they say the game is built "from the ground up", yet it looks literally like a not that huge evolution of FM7 visuals.
they use the same engine visually.
now sure, physics might be another thing entirely, but given the experience reiza now has with the madness engine physics wise, i simply can't believe that they ditch everything from there and write code starting from 0.
but i guess we will have to wait and see, its quite easy to feel/spot the madness engine so if there is something from that engine in the physics we will know.

Actually iracing and ACC GT3 cars behave like nothing with the physics of this world as they teach it in a an engineering class in this world. Maybe on Alpha Centauri might be spot on though.
Using those as a benchmark is pretty laughable.

Ian wasn't clear in that tweet, but he was saying that Project Cars 2 and AMS2 has the same SETA code, but that AMS2 was wonderfully polished. He wasn't talking about the new game.

So again, for the third time, it is not based on the Madness Engine.

If Bells crew is doing the physics then I don't hold out much hope for it. PC and PC2 were pretty ordinary in that respect and Reiza has had to do a lot of polishing to bring it up to scratch in AMS2. Bells crew also have a habit of moving onto the next project before fixing all the issues with a current sim. I will be surprised if it lives up to the hype.
 
As long as we get to Mod for the new GTR Im in. My favorite thing to do is Skin. If I cant Skin im out.
 
Hope it will be compatible backwards,
that a user could add cars and tracks from GTR2 and Evo.

I will admit my lack of knowledge about Slightly Mad studios games after GTR2, but do any of the GTR2 tracks work with P1, P2, P3? You want to stuff one of the newest sims soon to be available with content from a decade ago?
(note to Id/Bethesda/Valve: Make Quake II compatible with Doom.)
I can understand wanting cars of that era being included in a NEW sim, but not extremely low tech files from so long ago. Include fresh modern versions of the Ferrari F 550, the Viper, heck even the cheating Maserati, but don't make the new game so simple old files can be simply ported over.
 
I think most games nowaydays are focussing on GT3 too much (GTR Revivial, Rennsport,...) I would like a proper NASCAR or Australian Supercars game more.
