Happy 10-Year Anniversary Euro Truck Simulator 2!

ETS2_10yearanni.jpg
On October 18th, 2012 Euro Truck Simulator first saw the light of day. Going into open development that day, one of the most successful simulators on earth started being played. Let us join together in wishing it a Happy Birthday!

SCS Software, developers of Euro Truck Simulator and American Truck Simulator, unveiled their wonderchild "Euro Truck Simulator 2" on this day in 2012. Since its release and over the years, the game has garnered an immense audience, being played regularly by over 40.000 people at the same time.

It's actually interesting (to a statistics nerd like me) to see the development of ETS2 player numbers over the years. What started with 2.000 concurrent players grew over the years to the height of 60.000 players at a single time!

This success can only come from a dedicated team of developers. So thank you SCS Software! And congratulations on creating such a time-sink of a game!

What is Euro Truck Simulator 2?

If you don't know this phenomenon of gaming and simulation software, a look at its Steam page could help!

But let me briefly introduce you if you haven't heard:

You drive around Europe in trucks. Big rigs. Like the one, you see in the image before the article. You drive around Europe delivering stuff with your truck. Sounds incredibly mundane, I grant you. But it is so very enticing and relaxing to just drive around these virtual roads, abiding by the speed limits and building your virtual logistics empire (luckily without a lack of skilled labour).

Yes, you can found your own company and hire drivers to work for you. With the money gained, you can buy more garages in different cities and therefore enlarge your company and hire more drivers!

But the true joy comes in driving and just relaxing on the road.

And yes, it has wheel support.

And yes, you can play in VR.

The 10-Year Anniversary World of Trucks Event

Of course, if you know ETS2, you will be well aware of the regular online events the game boasts. This anniversary is, of course, no different.

But this event is a little simpler than usual. You just need to complete 1 delivery. And your reward? An achievement in World of Trucks.

And this:

These beautiful paint jobs can be yours.

But that's not all!

You can win 2 limited edition "Euro Truck Simulator 2"-branded Thrustmaster T248 wheels! One you can win by watching their birthday live stream, and the other by being luckily drawn out of social media posts boasting the hashtag #10YearsETS2.

You can find more information here.

While their ongoing support and updates for ETS2 are great and all, personally I'd love them to get to work on ETS3.
Don't hold your breath they mention another decade with ETS2. I'm not complaining though.....by a mile my most played game on steam (Although ATS will overtake it sooner rather than later).

I have both ETS2 and ATS. Both games are fun in the beginning when you discover the countries and/or states, but after a while I started to miss the challenge (apart from parking). Expanding your business is not really a challenge, but more a matter of driving kilometers.

I loved this Sim in VR, it was a great way to relax whilst driving through Italy to drop off Octopi to a Port. The modding scene was (is) fantastic especially the Map modders, creating new areas to explore.

I had a few gripes though;
I wish the map was a bigger scale, it always felt too small to me and whilst I wasn't prepared to drive on a 1:1 scale I felt it could've been closer.
The actual management side was severely lacking when I played (it may of improved), from a basic viewpoint it was good but there didn't seem to be much depth too it.
VR was a faff to get going and not actually supported very well, even though it did work it needed a lot of TLC.

One final thought and one I've thought of a lot, wouldn't it be great if they joined forces with MSFS and created ETS3 within the World for that flight sim!? The possibilities would be immense ) aside the 1:1 scale lol) in that Sim if MS/Asobo opened their eyes, imagine driving a load of Octopi to an Airport then flying them across the Pond to NYC and then jumping in another truck and driving them to New Jersey for delivery....oh that would be great.

Worst developer ever. 10 years of nothing. Literally. It's the same game. The only "upgrades" SCS added is stuff that modders had added for years. Some from almost day 1. They just took these mods and implemented them and said "we worked hard to give you some new features and upgrades". Yeah sure. Modders did all the work.
The "upgraded" lighting they added only recently, is pretty much the lighting mod we used for years.
Physical trailer coupling was also a mod that shortly after it was released, they copy/pasted it in the game. Same for tires and wheels. Same for trailers. I'm surprised they didn't copy paste the map and truck mods.
There are still trucks in the game that are unchanged since day 1. Maybe they didn't do it because the work of the modders is far superior in quality and they would have to downgrade them to make them look like their own "hard work".
At least they don't sell DLCs. But it's such a shame that they take advantage of the work of others and they don't even give ANY credit.
