Managing Director Marcel Offermans Leaves Studio 397

The rumblings under the Motorsport Games umbrella do not seem to stop: While news on the rFactor 2 side have been positive recently with the announcement of exciting content due this month, the end of May is going to be the end of Studio 397’s Managing Director Marcel Offermans at the company.

Offermans is not the first higher-up to decide that it is time to move on: In early April, it became known that Motorsport Games' President Stephen Hood had left the company, just as the planned BTCC game faced a delay that by now looks like a complete cancellation of the project.

What Offermans’ departure means for the future of rFactor 2 remains to be seen. He shared a YouTube video (see above) titled “So long, and thanks for all the fish!”, a reference to a famous book by Douglas Adams with the same name. The video shows his beloved GTE Corvette exiting the final turn of Circuit Zandvoort at night, followed by a statement regarding his departure.

“By the end of May, it is time to move on”, states Offermans while simultaneously expressing his gratitude for his time with Studio 397: “Over time, we grew the user base by an order of magnitude, improved just about every aspect of the simulation and did some really cool projects and collaboration.” Offermans has been with Studio 397 since 2016.

Update: according to this SEC filing the heads of Luminis, the previous owners of Studio 397, received a million dollars to complete the acquisition of the company but with 2.2 million being differered for undisclosed reasons.

Interestingly, his successor is apparently already in place to take over in June: “I am leaving rFactor 2 in very capable hands”, reads the penultimate line of Offermans’ statement – although it is not yet known who is going to take over the reigns or what the future holds regarding the simulation. The next content drop including two BTCC cars plus Donington Park, Brands Hatch and Laguna Seca is expected sometime in May.

Marcel my man the game has grown insanely the past 3 years or so. So much great content and it's going towards a brilliant direction! Thank you for your service to the Sim Racing Community.

P.S.
Gjon Camaj and Joseph Campana are my hero :barefoot:

"Reiza Studios was literally born out of ISI and its technology - the potential within isiMotor was not only the baseline that fast-tracked Reiza and several others into creating their own standalone products, it has been the platform over which many devs like myself and others at Reiza evolved from hobbysts into professional developers. As such ISI has a firm stake as the most influential company in sim racing history, and their flexible and friendly approach to business has always made them great partners to work with."

- Renato Simioni, Owner Reiza Studios (Automobilista)

"We wouldn’t have a studio today if it weren't for ISI technology. As a startup with a limited budget and staff, ISI technology saved us many years of development time and many millions in getting our first games out the door."

- Ian Bell, CEO Slightly Mad Studios (NFS SHIFT, Project Cars)

This is bad. Seemed like MSG is dying rapidly. This is what happen when you only want to do esports and shove it on everyone.

Everything is questionable. It could be terrible, could be not at all. It is not worth worrying if you can't change anything. So don't get scared or too certain. rF2 is ambitious simulation, it is ambition that should never be hung up.

Unfortunately latest years did show trends of dreams and ambitions getting shut down everywhere and anywhere near the top in the world. People should be educated more. And those, who purposely turn other people backwards so they could come at the top, - should not be respected.

I guess he saw the proverbial handwriting on the wall with Motorsports Games basically being out of money. Very sad news indeed. Maybe we could get Elon Musk to buy Studio 397? God knows he's got the money to do so.
If they release a bunch of Tesla cars in the sim, perhaps a small investment would be interesting?

If S397 and rF2 is operating at a profit then I don't any see the reason why not. If there is money to be made some one will pick it up. The Banks will make sure if it ever comes to that you can be sure. If anything the May content drop paints a very positive pictures for rF2.
I don't think you are looking at this very realistically though. What is attractive about Rfactor 2 right now to a potential buyer? Not a lot. Let's say they purchase Rfactor2 at a significant discount of $10 million dollars. They'd have to sell 300,000 more copies of the game just to pay for the purchase. Not going to happen. The game also supports modding and already has most of the content a user could want, making it not conducive to porting to consoles and is 10 years old. I play the game and I like it, but if you really look at it as a business investment it is a horrible investment. There isn't even an offline mode or half decent ai. MSG haven't made a ROI on the purchase yet.

Well, there are actually 6 books to that series. I think it is 6 anyway. :)

And the 4th is called So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

So in your opinion rF2 base code has no value... LOL you must think game is developed over a weekend. Fact is most sims out there would improve over night with the rF2 tech.

It took S397 SIX years to make a UI. SIX YEARS. 6... years. Just to make a functioning ui. You can't just take the good parts of RF2 and plop it in and BOOM magic. You are letting your love of RF2 taint basic logic. A company would be better served spending the money hiring Gjon who is the brains of the engine.

It took S397 6 years to succumb to demands because of some arbitrary factor beyond our knowledge. And that UI is anything but functional. It is slow and unresponsive, on top of integrating very badly with the Steam Workshop it uses as both a storefront and mod database. Any person with a mediocre crash course in UI they found on YouTube could make that UI in a few hours. A better example of what constitutes a good UI would be the "new" one in BeamNG, event though it's just a web browser disguised as UI.

$16M investment to purchase S397 - first year results:

"Studio397’s results of operations for the period from April 20, 2021 to December 31, 2021 included approximately $845,000 in revenues and $1,857,000 in net losses"

Not exactly paying back on that investment...

So now you admit the base code as value and decided to move on to attack something else.
