rFactor 2 | April Release Candidate Brings Fixes to Sound and Wet Weather

A new release candidate is available for rFactor 2 via Steam which previews a long list of upcoming changes to the title, including improved sounds, engine and brake cooling and shift protection for select open-wheelers, and improvements to wet weather driving.

For those looking to preview what will be coming to rFactor 2 in the coming months, a new release candidate build is now live.

The preview build brings a long list of changes to the title, highlighted by global improvements to the in-game sound engine and the wet weather experience.

Studio 397 notes that the changes to the sound engine will immediately be applied to all cars, but specific improvements will be applied in time to certain cars.

There are also physics improvements available with this build, but they currently only apply to the Dallara IR-18 and Formula Pro vehicles, and these updated cars can be found temporarily in the "TEST" category from the vehicle selection screen. Each has received a new shift protection feature, along with improved engine and brake cooling physics.

Racing in the rain will also be an improved experience in rFactor 2, as the S397 team has enhanced how the rain accumulates and evaporates, as well as how AI cars deal with adverse track conditions.

The full list of changes available in the new test build can be found on the next page and in rFactor 2's blog, along with how to opt into release candidates via Steam. Let us know your thoughts on this build, or anything else rFactor 2 related, in the comments below.

That is a surprisingly big changelog for rf2. Maybe the days of irregular and tiny changelogs are over. I wonder if they have more staff on board now?

The Release Candidate credits list Greg Mills of iRacing fame and the RAD software via Mills Soundworks. Don't know if that is a new credit or has been there all along.
Thank you Dave.
Just of curiosity I will try to check this info out.
The iRacing relation sounds a bit interesting because I know that iRacing some years ago did some experiments (or at least had some thoughts) about an old but very advanced "real" surround system called Ambisonics.
Conserning racing games it has only been used in an older codemaster release if I remember right.
But I know personally what this system can do in a home sound system so it could be extremely exciting if rF2 had got a new sound fiance :p

The original coders, ISI, had no interest in creating a championship mode. The current owners have only just recently begun to address offline play. I doubt tho, that any championship type racing will be offered. They WANT championships, but via online racing.
There is a 3rd party app that can track an offline championship, among many other functions:
rFactor2 Log Analyzer

Anyone one having problem with opponent volume being too loud, no way to adjust now ( setting missing from audio ) and tried editing line in player does nothing
Can barely hear my engine against all the AI

P.S. Dropped back to stable build sound is okay

Why there are no AI championship mode in rFactor2?
Like dave said, that wasn´t planned when the game was originally made.
However, s397 actually have the intention to bring an offline, ai championship mode. It´s looking more feasible now that they´re working on the ai.

Historic and others I tried

Till now you had a "player volume ratio " and" opponent volume ratio" in sound options
I would turn the AI volume much lower then my own and was good, sounded realistic

Now the AI are screaming and changing settings just lowers your own volume as well
Also my surround headphones the AI positional is not as good old build
I could close my eyes and know exactly where sound comes from
Now AI sound just surrounds you
Never had a issue with sound before never had to adjust my sound levels either

Don't take any notice of settings they are all over the place trying to fix it

Now is no individual level for AI or yourself

Question: did they fix that issue that prevents the AI from overtaking slower cars in the in-lap for a pit stop?

Because so much is being said about how the AI will be smarter in terms of changing weather conditions, but if they can't behave in the inlap that really doesn't help much.

Sorry if it is a dumb question but honestly I gave up following RF2 updates a while ago. But if this MAJOR problem got fixed I may want to give it another go.

Yes, I can confirm that this is fixed. What is even more mind boggling is that this wasn’t even an intentional fix either, it is not even listed on the patch notes (despite this being an issue which has been raised over and over for many years)

I think it goes to show just how out of touch the developers are with rFactor 2. They address an issue that is so important to the core experience for the offline players and they’re not even aware about it.

Either way, it is a HUGE update. They’ve finally removed the line of code that prevented the AI from overtaking on an in-lap - even if they’re pitting for fuel as well.

We can finally enjoy a multi-class race in rFactor 2! :)

A slider for opponents volume is imho strongly needed

well I hate to upset you it has had one for 10 years lol :)

P.S. I did not make my observations from that thread and only now just read it

I could tell the second I heard AI leaving pits started echoing around garages something was not right

But it is more then that I can't explain it best thing I can think of is like all AI are in your car lol

WHEN SAVING GAME PROGRESS????

1. You must save session progress when you are on track, in pits won't work

2. Get to good place on track preferably a straight and press esc and close session

3. To get back start that replay and rewind a little bit then click " resume"

  • New 3D Sound Engine
  • Increased amount of simultaneous effects to 256
  • Environmental effects and filtering system
  • Support for full surround sound setups
  • HRTF support (Binaural headphone experience)
From a RF2 lover , I lost faith on it but open to change my mind again if this continue...
Some feature request

- championship mod with multiple championships for multiple series at the same time
- ability to run sessions with Race 1 then Race 2 ( 2 races week end )
-updated in_game fonts and overall design
-replace the "miyor miyor sound" when adjusting the mirror and add a proper mirror adjsutment app or UI if possible

UPDATE: faith restoration failed successfully lol....talked too soon, I thought we will get a proper 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound via speaker but no. Also the HRTF is broken , it's like flanged. My RF2 lagged a lot also.

Plans are good. Better than nothing. But don't forget Studio 397 have made noises indicating they were "aware" of offline-related issues or had some kind of long-term plan to fix them for years... so I'll believe that they're serious about something like an offline championship mode, frankly, when I see it.

The other thing is that there's already a powerful and flexible way to do offline championships in rF2 (and rF1 and AMS1) – Nibo's Log Analyzer tool, through which you can assign any single race you do (with any rules) to an offline championship. Not saying it wouldn't be great for Studio 397 to build on Nibo's work and bring it within the game's UI. But if 397's championship mode is the usual restrictive way of (unrealistically) having to set up a championship where every race has to be run under identical rules, number of laps, start time, etc. (like in AMS1 for example) I likely won't use it!
