Watch: F1 23 Review

The wait is over on Friday: F1 23 launches on June 16th, with players who preordered the game being able to get on the grid a few days early already. Of course, OverTake's Jonas "ChampionJoe" Schulz had to take a closer look at the latest entry in EA Sports' and Codemaster's series of official F1 titles.

F1 23's main talking points ahead of its release were the return of the Braking Point story mode, which sees the story of Aiden Jackson and Devon Butler continue after its F1 2021 appearance. A brand-new team, rivals forced to work together, and seats that are under threat by a rising star make for an interesting starting point in F1 23. The influence of the successful Netflix series F1 Drive to Survive cannot be denied in the story mode - whether that is a good or a bad thing is up to the player.

Meanwhile, ChampionJoe also dives into the new F1 World mode, which serves as a new hub for various game modes and multiplayer functionality? Is it a gateway to an Ultimate Team implementation like in FIFA or other EA Sports titles? Not necessarily, but we will let ChampionJoe do the explaining.

Most importantly, the physics improvements deserve a closer look as well: Have the flaws of F1 22 been remedied? Does F1 23 communicate its driving model well? You will find the answers in the video. Be sure to also check out our first impressions of the refined handling and the all-new precision drive gamepad controls.

Same here, I would be more than glad expending 80 euros if the image quality was on par with AC not even asking for an AMS2! Career mode is always very fun, but VR is essential for me since I have a headset. Hopefully as long as they have to get it ready for psvr2 in forthcoming seasons, we should get advantage of it! I’m really excited about having a f1 game with good vr support. Anyway, this is my experience, maybe it’s good for other vr simracers! I hope many people can fully enjoy it.

I also understood from the video review above here, from the newspost, that the level of detail popin got worse then previous titles and that there's actually more blur in the distance instead of less. So I think that they build it on deferred rendering. Wrong choice, I think that F1 24+ will have the same issues so I think that my hope is gone now also for the 24 version...

Judging on the review. A thing that turned me off... it seems the same blurfest as in the previous years is repeated. For the PC version that is.
Anything that moves or is further away than several meters seems blurry.
No matter what AA you fire on it.
Hope i'm wrong, but all the previous 4 years gives me sore eyes.
Worst AA in the business for those.
Was wondering if they test the game on 4k 24 inch monitors.
And than decided the AA is fine.

I wonder why it's so difficult to creare a F1 simulation, with driving aids for everyone, so, who is an anthusiast simracer will play the simulation mode, and who is an simcade-arcade lover, will play "this" arcade-ish mode. Everybody is happy, force feedback is alive and you gave justice to F1.
You basically have good F1 physics engine able to be simplified for casual gamers, and you don't have to mod anything, because there are already two game modes.
God...

It's not difficult, they just don't want to.

I could try to explain that F1 series are designed for a wider range of gamers and etc but that is becoming really boring to repeat all the time.

I'm going to show some numbers of all-time peak players on steam...

F1 22: 23763
RF2: 1758
Automobilista 2: 1299
ACC: 9083

Considering that F1 22 is also played in consoles, that number should be at least 4 or 5 times higher. And i'm not going to talk about sales numbers...

You are part of a minority (and a pretty boring one that can't be happy with anything), and you need to understand that.

There's no point spending money to create a "simulation" for a minority.

Does everyone have this VR jitter? I am very susceptible to jitter and stutter in VR. I cannot play any game at less than the frequency of the headset otherwise it feels stuttery. I dont know how other people do it actually. Its full frames or else I have to resort to fixed frame rate with MS to get smooth experince (and not all games handle MS well - some are great, others not worth the bother).

but here's the kicker. I do not notice this VR jitter in F1 22. Sure , I run a 4090, but previously only had a 3080 and run quite high settings to get rid of the blur. Yet, no jitter detected. I see so many complaints about it too. Just lucky for once I guess.

Oh, and what is it exactly that makes the handling "arcade" in F1 23? I drive F1 22 exactly the same way I drive the F1 Ultimates in AMS2. Don't notice a hell of a lot of difference tbh. Can someone expand a little bit?

Its not like I dont have any SIM experience as I am one of the 10 people who bought GPL on release and have played just about everything released since (except iracing). In fact would say my sim racing experience started with Revs on the C64. Now that was damned hard which I guess makes it one of the most realistic sims ever released ;)

People can't even think about one or another being realistic or not, as they simply don't know how to drive the real thing...

So yeah, can't see much difference either.

For me, the best feedback would be from a driver using the game and the simulator, for example when Williams came out on iRacing, Rubens Barrichello was racing for the team and also racing in Brazilian virtual motorsport leagues, in an audio he said that the Virtual Williams from iRacing, at the time, had nothing to do with the real car, reactions, way of driving, nothing looked like it and that's because the iRacing team spent almost 1 year collecting data from the team to make the virtual car, for practically nothing . It must not be easy to actually simulate an F1 car and all its fine details on a regular PC, not to mention that each car would have its very detailed physics to do

Initial thoughts after playing the game last night.
  • Needed to unplug my HE shifter and hand brake to program my GSI wheel
  • Even though I have a 4090, I needed to dial in the graphics for my triple 1440p rig
  • Mapping all the buttons is a pain
  • Las Vegas track stinks and whoever goes to the race isn’t going to see squat
  • Driving is fun and I didn’t feel a lot of difference compared to AMS2 modern F1 cars
  • All the bling stuff and story has never really interested me however maybe one rainy day I may try it
  • Only tried Vegas on timed attack. Graphics do not impress and the lack of triple support stinks
  • I do like the music. It does get you in the mood to race
  • Overall score of C
Interesting. I wasn't able to map any buttons on my GSI wheel (FPE) for both F1 2021 and 2022. Any reasons to believe whether this might have changed now. Quite unfortunate that we cannot use a Formula wheel on a Formula game.

My experience mapping buttons was similar for F1 '22 and '23. I needed to unplug other controllers before my GSI wheel was able to be mapped. I have iRacing, ACC, AC, Roaceroom, AMS2, and Rf2. I had no problem mapping the GSI wheel with them. I posted this issue in the GSI Discord several months ago and nobody had a solution. My advice would be to unplug anything you are not using when you try to use the F1 games.

Played the trial on pc last night and have to say even with my crap g920 it's pretty good, it might not be on the level of the top sims but it's satisfying to drive
