Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

First Racing Sim 01.jpg
There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

All I want to know is what game is this? Looks pretty good for an old game! (Especially the driver animation.)

I think I was on -81 or something. Best at that time was Huttu with -91 or so. Let me check....

My rank progress statistics through 6 years of racing:
But as I recall, the Rank actually started more then 1 year before as my 1st entry (dec 2000), but it was deleted because of an GPL v1.1 update.

This is alien Rank ! congratulation .
I am "only" -20, which I consider as my best simracing success so far.

I have decided to work on it again !
There are daily many guys which post laps about 20 years after the beginning of Grand Prix Legends.
Do you know any equivalent thing im simracing ??

I have already mentionend somewhere that in my opinion the GPLrank is one of the most fanstastic things which happened in simracing.
I will never understand why Kunos didn't implement such an easy feature in ACC. They are intelligent guys, they have for sure a reason.

Thank you.
Go on, its quite easy to reach lets say -60 or so.
I doubt there is any equivalent webiste for any other sim since GPL. All have just PB lists, but nothing like GPLRank.
Indeed its an amazing thing, to come back after 15 years being away, and still seeing it, whats even more, trying to put a new PB on it again. Just WOW.

I started simracing on a Mac in the mid-2000s, so there wasn't much choice.

However, F1 Championship Season 2000 was absolutely mega and a perfect game to start with. It had a driving school which taught you how to drive with starts at Indianapolis and then splitting Monza and Sepang up into one corner at a time to teach the racing line. All of this with full audio coaching and in the Arrows 2-seater.
I also had Total Immersion Racing, which had some excellent fictional circuits and multiclass racing which allowed for a top-tier career mode.
I then got Colin McRae Rally 2005 which was also excellent fun and had the career mode sorted too.

I finally got access to a PC and basically ran solely on rFactor for about 3 years until I bought F1 2013.

In stages.....main games that led me into sim racing.

Atari 2600 - Pole Position
Mega Drive - Super Monaco 1 & 2
PS - Gran Turismo 1 & 2 - F1 Series, TOCA
PC - (Before Wheel) - Stunts etc, Papyrus Indycar games and Nascar series & Crammonds GP1 ,2 ,3 ,4

With a wheel - GTR & rFactor.

I submitted my first time on July 7th, 2002. My most recent submission was January 25th, 2006. Over 4 years of playing the same game. I don't think any of my times were set using pedals. Crazy.

I had some buddies at work and we would race on Wednesday nights.

Stunts!!!!!!! I had forgotten that game. You remind me this jewel, thanks

Lots of different titles in different eras. Sometimes I'd step away from games/sims due to having too much fun or too little time in the real world.

Revs would be first serious racing game I tried.

GP2 would the first PC game I matched with a proper wheel and pedals (thrustmaster)

Indycar 1 and 2 and the Nascar series was when I started putting more money into decent PCs that would run them and then of course GPL became an obsession. Everything else just seemed to flow together from stuff like that Le Mans games and GTR etc. If it involved driving I'd buy it. Midtown Madness, Gran Tourismo, anything. Probably easier to list driving games I've not played.

Got a bit more serious last couple of years, I try to be more analytical about my driving rather than really on reflexes which I don't have any more. Same with my motorbike riding IRL, I'm still pretty quick but I'm not impulsive anymore.

Any game, arcade included, is a simulation. You can argue about the quality of the physics modeling, but indeed they are all sims. Be it Daytona USA, Ridge Racer, or Pole Position, they all simulate driving and racing.
There's a clear defined line between a racing game and a racing simulator, stop blowing smoke out of your wazoo man.
