Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

First Racing Sim 01.jpg
There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

With Grand Prix Legends, did anyone use the GPL Rank site to track best laps? Did you go negative? The day I went negative on all standard tracks was a big day in sim racing for me.

Wow, I visited that website after 15 years :) :) And its still there. Thx for reminding me about it.
I think I was on -81 or something. Best at that time was Huttu with -91 or so. Let me check....

My rank progress statistics through 6 years of racing:
But as I recall, the Rank actually started more then 1 year before as my 1st entry (dec 2000), but it was deleted because of an GPL v1.1 update.

I think I earned Negative at Monza, and lucked into a Negative at Mexico. Lost the car into the first turn, slid alllllll the way around , like a drift car, and somehow the tires bit JUST BEFORE I slammed sideways into those white half tire solid objects that lined the track. There still is a version of GPLrank keeping track of rF2 and who know what other sims these days. Of course with my memory these days...who knows!!!

Richard Burns Rally on the PS2 showed me that, too me, the sim side was the best side.

Hmm, after seeing other's replies, AC wasn't exactly my first sim.

Played Microprose F1 GP, Indianapolis 500, Test Drive on A500. I just didn't consider them very interesting at the time. Because of the control method. I used to like arcade racing games more before trying a proper FFB wheel in AC

And I guess even if FFB wheels existed at that time, physics would have not been up to par for good FFB

I had enjoy many NES racing games, but what embark me was playing Stunts in DOS.
Be able to create my own racing circuit and then going trough it was out of my mind, seen how gravity affect how I tacke the stuns and obstacles, the diferents cars...

Then in school the computers where updated ans was lucky to run Nascar Racing, a far better game to what I had available home in Top Gear 2 in my current SNES. Unfortunate I was not able to have a good pc for a long time that the only alternaty I had was Gand Turismo 1 and 2 that I played at a PSOne loaned by a friend.

Whe I got a good PC after finishing college the first thing a did was to bougth Assetto Corsa, and went the sim racing rabbit hole since then. I'm not able to spend much money in equipment but have modify mine to give me an inmersive experience: Bass transducers, refurb Oculus Rift, G27 with Hydraulic brake mod and i'm still creating my ouwn stages for rFactor2 and Assetto Corsa.
Been a fun ride.

Completely forgot that one! Now lots of memories keep flowing in.
When I wrote the 'Speed King' MC sim for C64, I knew in same sentence I forgot the previous racing game titles on C64 I played and was about to correct myself on C64 games.
Remember playing Sprint 2 in ~1980 together with a schoolmate in the local game hall (very poor on numbers regarding console machines AFAIK), ofcourse we quite quickly found the laundry coin trick to start over again and again and again :D

That would be Indycar Racing by Papyrus. Then their NASCAR titles (1 and 2), Indycar Racing II, and NASCAR 3. The big jump came with Grand Prix Legends, then NASCAR 4, and 2003 Season. Followed by various ISI titles as well, SportsCar GT, a couple of their F1 offerings, the ISI based SIMBIN games, and of course the wonderful rFactor 1, which I still love for it's great mod library. All these were interspersed with some Micropose F1 titles, Codemasters titles, and the great Assetto Corsa, also loved for the availability of great mods. Great titles. Great fun!

Perhaps unsurprisingly GTR2 was the sim that got me into it (on my Mums laptop ) although it was Assetto Corsa that convinced to me to get my first wheel.

Is not simracing, but my first game with cockpit view was Grand Prix Circuit (Accolade-1988) in CGA mode... mi first PC was really slow (8086):

That game made me interested in car titles.

Cheers!

This video sparked a very old memory...it was around 1990-92 and I was a little kid...my god-brother who was in his early teens was on the his family's computer playing a game and I distinctly remember most of the intro sequence with this guy in a Porsche turning down the window and driving off, and everything was shades of purple like your video as well...but was unsure of the name...seeing the "Accolade presents" in your video instantly brought that memory back...Managed to finally figure out it was the original Test Drive.

Thanks for that, as now I've found a video on it, I haven't seen this in 30 years! This is the first racing game I ever saw...he used to play so many legendary games back then during summer break (mostly on NES, but I do remember him playing the Star Trek 25th anniversary game on PC where they actually spoke! That was so awesome back then after only hearing synth music/effects in every game before that) and I'd just sit back and be amazed, soaking it all in...he's the reason I'm such an avid gamer today. Great Memories.

First started playing Asphalt 8/9 on the iPad, then Real Racing 3. I was watching Youtube when I was 13 in 2019 when I came across actual racing games. Saw a few Forza Horizon 4 videos, begged by dad to buy an xbox with the Forza bundle, we got a crappy steering wheel at first but then we made the decision to buy a Logitech G920. Forza Horizon 4 got me interested in sort of sim-racing, then Assetto Corsa on the Xbox, which merged into F1 2020 and then I got a PC, so now it's F1 2021, Assetto Corsa and occasionally Project Cars 2 or the Dirt series. Thinking of upgrading to a Thrustmaster or Fanatec wheel now I have a job and can afford it (albeit after 6 months of saving)

Guys, it is so amazing reading what you tell, kinda very vintage stories. As a quadra, I do remember very well the late 80s and early 90s. I was around ten, between NES and CPC and sometimes, when visiting friends or family, I hat the opportunity to play on a PC. A kinda wow effect was incredible... although games were so simple that today's young teenagers could hardly call them games, given what they can easily play on consoles or even on phones...

yeah so true, I am currently a teenager and those older games are not so intriguing to me, but this is what my dad used to play as a young adult, maybe not racing games specifically but flight sim he played a lot in the late 80s and into the 2000s, and he also played dirt 3 a lot when it came out, and is currently obsessed with Flight Sim 2020

Understandable; it is very hard for us who were there to go back to some of those games now, but back then graphics technology was evolving at such an incredible rate that was very obvious, compared to games today which haven't changed that much graphics-wise in the last 10 or even 15 years. Compare for example Gran Turismo 5 Prologue which came out in 2007 on the PS3 to current titles at the same resolution (1080p); definitely more refinement and photorealism, but not a giant leap in quality, the changes weren't as extreme.

Now imagine a time where you're a little kid and went from seeing only graphics like this in 1977:

to this in 1982:

to this with actual FFB in the wheel in 1992:

to this in 1996:

People who went through the video game revolution of the 80's and 90's had their minds constantly blown by how much better things could get...I didn't catch all of it being born in the mid 80's, but man it was quite something to experience.

I had completely forgotten, Pole Position was my first. As a matter of fact ,my friend still has a working standup game in his garage. We would play that and Asteroids for (pretend) ownership of his recording studio .Great memories!!

I'd have to say Grand prix Circuit and Test drive got me into racing games but the first sim I played with a wheel were Grand prix legends and Sportscar GT. That being said as a young kind about 90% of the games I owned were somehow car related games so I'd guess it boils down to what can be considered the earliest sim racing titles. I think the first Need for speed deserves a mention. The fact alone that it did what it did already in '95 is pretty impressive. Gran turismos were great too but to me the driving with wheel is what made gpl and scgt the first sims to me. I'd guess viper racing deserves a mention as well.
