WRC 23: When Is the Announcement Coming?

After acquiring Codemasters in early 2021, EA Sports now has two big racing licenses under its roof: Having seamlessly continued the series of F1 games, the first rally title by EA Sports and Codemasters is due this year - but sim racers are still waiting for an official announcement. Could it be right around the corner?

Rumors had the new rally game set for launch in July, but by now, this seems highly unlikely as WRC 23 has not yet been officially announced. F1 23 had been announced six weeks prior to its launch on June 16th - that would make for a mid-to-late August release should the game be announced very soon.

2023 marks the first year that EA Sports owns the official WRC license after Nacon and KT Racing have delivered their final effort under their previous licensing agreement in WRC Generations. Their series of WRC titles usually released in late summer or even later in the year, with Generations being available in November, whereas its predecessor WRC 10 had been released in early August.

It is possible that EA wants to tie the official announcement of WRC 23 to a real WRC event, two of which are coming up shortly: From July 20th to 23rd, the World Championship makes station in Estonia before moving on to Rally Finland from August 3rd to 6th.

With the popularity of the latter, which is affectionately known as the "Grand Prix on Gravel" among fans due to its high speeds, this could be the event EA is targeting - Rally is enormously popular in Finland, and many Finns get behind the wheel themselves in local events.

Held for the first time in 1951, Rally Finland started to become increasingly popular and has been part of the WRC calendar since the World Championship's first season in 1973, with the exception of 1995 and 2020. Characterized by its gravel stages that feature very high average speeds and spectacular jumps, the event is one of the crown jewels of the WRC season.

It is easy to imagine how the event would make a perfect stage (no pun intended) to officially announce WRC 23 - possibly even with a first hands-on version available for fans to try. Of course, this is still just speculation at this point. The official Twitter profile for EA Sports Rally has recently been active and celebrating the anniversary of the very first Colin McRae Rally, which was released 25 years ago. The successor has also been mentioned - could it be that a retrospective is going to lead to the newest iteration? Time will tell.

We know that EA Sports invited Youtubers to Sweden for the rally last February. They were able to test the game. They are instructed not to reveal any details about the game.Apparently some knew that the date of July 28 was wrong.Officially we just know that EA Sports has until March 31, 2024 to release it.....

We just know that three manufacturers are interested in possibly joining the championship in 2025 with the new regulations: Alpine,Skoda and the Stellantis Group (Peugeot,Citroën....).However these manufacturers want an electric championship.
No. There are ongoing negotiations about new regulations that will reduce the cost so that there will be at least 4 teams in the championship in 2024, but also the future of the sport beyond 24.
Nobody said anything about wanting WRC to become EV and everybody knows that it can't and won't. The hybrid systems they use now have increased the cost dramatically and they might even remove them and focus purely on new types of fuels, which is a much more sustainable option not only for motorsports but production cars as well.

I always buy from these and they've always been spot on about the release day!

Game will be out before 1 november:

Not sure, but maybe not all locations will be out at the release, also due to the trophies only mention:
  1. Monte-Carlo (1)
  2. Sweden (2)
  3. Mexico (3)
  4. Portugal (5)
  5. Sardinia (6)
  6. Estonia (8)
  7. Iberia
The Iberia rally I not understand completly, because it is not a 2023 WRC round.

That would mean the following rounds are missing
  • Croatia (4)
  • Kenya (7)
  • Finland (9)
  • Greece (10)
  • Chile (11)
  • Central European Rally (12)
  • Japan (13)

The following cars are mentioned:
  • MINI Cooper S
  • Lancia Stratos
  • Subaru Impreza 1995
  • Citroen Xsara WRC
What does this mean?
- Iberian rally is probably the Spain rally, meaning we might get classic locations.
- Not all rally will be available with launch.
- There will be different classes, including historic. I though an other article mentioned there will be 16 classes in WRC23. DiRT Rally 2.0 had 13 classes.

For sure additional classes will be:
- WRC 2.0L replaces 2000cc class
- WRC 1.6L
- WRC 1.6L EVO
(the last official road going based cars)
- Rally 1
- Rally 2 replaces R5
- Rally 3 / JWRC
-
Rally 4 replaces R2

Rally 5 I dont think will be added, as there is already a entry Rally4/R2 class. Though we come on 17 (13+4) classes with 4 extra classes, so one to much. maybe one class that not returns than i think is the is NR4/R4 class. it can also be ofcourse that all WRC classes (2.0L, 1.6L and 1,6L+) will be combined. To be honest, you never know with codies sometimes.

Yesterday i found out officially it is a yearly itteration (official Codemasters Holding documents):

Also WRC license was confirmed in the 2020 annual report, while a lot was just based on an article from DirtFish.

I wish they add the old german rally. There's one stage I loved on the old WRC games

What's your source for that, or is it a trust me bro kind of a thing?

I'm really apprehensive because I know it'll be simcade because EA is all about profits and profits only and will simply not allow something like Dirt Rally 1 or 2 to come out. So it'll be simcade - how simcade is the question.

Nah, handling will be the best ever with all of the training wheels for the lesser drivers. (I might have a public shaming in store come release day)

I expect an announcement after the Summer. Maybe end of 23. First the FIA has to settle on the new regulations, which might bring in more manufacturers. Also, more countries will be added next year. Making an announcement now would be extremely premature.
