RDFIA ANNOUNCEMENT

Season has now reached it's halfway point which means the cut-off for points and pre-qualifying.

The following statements come into effect immediately:

No driver has to drop points

TEAM REBAQUE no longer has to pre-qualify. SHADOW will take part in pre-qualifying for the rest of the season.

While we didn't finsh as high up the order as we had hoped to, it sure is great to finally see both our drivers making it to the end, on top of that both in the points. Our main problem this weekend was the rather poor qualifying, due to that we lost too much time in the race being stuck behind other cars.

Ligier was happy with Tambay's performance. "At the next round in France we will expect a big result because it is our home race", Ligier stated.

1979 French Grand Prix

The French Grand Prix returned to Dijon for the second time in the championship's history after one year absence. Cricuit's location in high altitude meant the turbo-Renaults would once again have a slight advantage over their rivals.

Pre-qualifying

Pre-qualifying session saw one new team taking part. Jochen Mass's fourth place finish in the season opener had helped Team Rebaque out of the dreaded prequalifying. Shadow took their place.

The new-comers had a rough introduction to pre-qualifying. Bobby Rahal managed a decent fourth but Patrick Gaillard was badly off the pace. Shadow's problems meant that Ensign and Alfa Romeo would advance to qualifying. Jean-Pierre Jabouille lead the way and took his first pre-qualifying win of the season.

Qualifying

Coming into the qualifying Williams and Ferrari were considered the favourites with the biggest threat coming from Renault. The predictions proved to be spot-on. Elio de Angelis was the fastest but only just by mere five hundreds of a second to Alan Jones. Gilles Villeneuve in third wasn't far either. Scheckter was fourth fastest in Tyrrell. Rest of the top-8 were the teammates of the top-4 meaning that the teams using either Michelin tyres or turbo engine locked out the four front rows.

Alfa Romeo's Clay Regazzoni was ninth and Lotus's much improved Cheever tenth fastest. Arrows drivers had good pace once again, de Villota in 11th and Zorzi starting directly behind him. Biggest losers of the qualifying were easy to spot. McLarens had struggled with their setups all weekend long and it showed as Emerson Fittipaldi was 15th and his teammate, the winner of South African GP, Keke Rosberg only 25th fastest. Alonside the Finn in the grid was another huge disappointment, Brabham's Jacky Ickx. Derek Daly in 24th rounded out the unbelievably unlikely three last grid positions.

Race
De Angelis
remained in the lead for the first lap but had to give his position up come second lap as Jones overtook him at the end of main straight. Villeneuve and Scheckter kept their positions but Arnoux's race got off very dodgy - he was down to 8th after first lap as Piquet, Reutemann and Cheever breezed past him. Another big loser was Pironi who had slipped down to 12th. In the back Ickx and Daly started their attacks from the back instantly but Rosberg got caught up badly and wasn't able to improve his position.

Jones started to build a gap right after he got the lead. De Angelis was struggling to keep the pace he had in qualifying and had to give up a couple places to Villeneuve and Scheckter as the race progressed. Cheever had fantastic speed early on and by lap 10 he was already up to 5th. His race was hindered by a spin around lap 20 that dropped the American to the last place.

Ten laps later there was big crash in mid-pack when Tambay, Pironi and Arnoux came together while battling for 7th place. Running order after the incident was Jones in comfortable lead, Villeneuve, Piquet, de Angelis, Scheckter and Reutemann. Patrese had had a good race so far and was now up to seventh after the drivers in front crashed. De Villota, Lauda and Daly rounded out the top-10.

Few laps later the top drivers started to drop out of race. First victim was Reutemann and by 55th lap out of 80 he had been joined by Piquet, Villeneuve and Patrese. Cheever had recovered well from his spin and already challenging for points by this points. With 20 laps to go race-leading Jones had already lapped everyone else but de Angelis and Scheckter in 2nd and 3rd. De Villota's Arrows was once again fast and reliable which had helped the Spaniard to fourth. Lauda and Fittipaldi were the last two in points scoring positions but Cheever, Daly and Regazzoni were very close.

The top-3 kept their positions until the chequered flag which meant a back-to-back win for Ferrari's Alan Jones. Rookie de Angelis scored his first podium finish of his career with a ver composed drive. Scheckter was third. De Villota was about to score a strong finish once again but was unfortunately forced to retire with four laps to go. His retirement elevated Lotus's Eddie Cheever to fourth - a wonderful result after his initial issues. Niki Lauda had relatively quiet race to fifth. Derek Daly's sixth place finish marked a double points-finish for Lotus which was a huge improvement from difficult Monaco GP. The most disappointed driver of the day was arguably Emerson Fittipaldi. The Braziliand McLaren driver was in place to get his second points scoring finish of the season when his Ford engine exploded in the last lap of the race.

Shame for de Vilotta, cruical points lost and I really want to get high up in the constructors's championship. The Lotuses are now really pulling away. But the new car had pace, which is a positive we can take out of this race.

Great performance by Jody to secure the team's fourth podium this season. Didier was unlucky to be involved in the incident, but we're sure he'll fight back next race.
Ferrari is miles ahead in the constructor standings, so our aim now is to secure 2nd place. The battle for the drivers' title is still open though, and if Jody can keep up his current level, he might have a good chance to snatch it in the end.

Aaaaaah, that wasn't something we have expected...
"Both of your drivers were 1.017 and 1.294 seconds behind the polesitter respectively in qualifying and Takahara finished 8th in the race, how do you feel?"

That wasn't something our team expected for our home race, it's half disappointing that we couldn't pick up the points or a podium finish as we expected neither of these to happen.

1979 British Grand Prix

Following two back-to-back wins, Ferrari's Alan Jones had taken the championship lead from his teammate and he was looking to extend his lead on the super-fast Silverstone Circuit. Once again, there was an unveiling of new car as Renault had finally completed the work on their new chassis, the RS10. After Gilles Villeneuve's two podiums early in the season, the French team had had serious reliability issues. René Arnoux in particular had suffered badly and was still yet to score a points finish.

Pre-qualifying

Alfa Romeos looked clearly the best team in pre-qualifying. Harald Ertl was fastest and Clay Regazzoni third fastest after setting his time early in the session. Shadow was the other team to progress, thanks to Bobby Rahal's improved pace. The American youngster hasn't been at his best in qualifying sessions this season but was this time able to defeat his French teammate comfortably. Ensigns failed to pre-qualify for t he sixth time this season.

Qualifying

The results of the qualifying session were relatively straight-forward. The Ferraris locked the front row and this time it was Jones who got the pole. Renault's new RS10 chassis looked very strong and the French outfit locked the second row. Derek Daly was a slight surprise in fifth, beating the Williams' in 6th and 7th. Clay Regazzoni improved massively from his pre-qualifying lap and got himself up to 8th place and in great position to score Alfa Romeo's first points of the season. McLarens and Cheever in the other Lotus completed the top-11.

Copersucar Fittipaldi has been unable to develop their chassis at the same rate as their rivals. Niki Lauda however is able to get the maximum performance out of the car, this time 12th place was what he achieved. His teammate Rupert Keegan wasn't as competitive and wasn't able to qualify for the race after setting a disappointing 27th fastest time.

Most disappointing performance however was the one by Tyrrell. Scheckter's 13th and Pironi's 16th places are not what the team sitting second in the championship standings is looking for. Ligiers, Brabhams, Arrowses, Wolves and Rebaques completed the grid with Shadow's Rahal being the last one to qualify.

Race
Pole sitter Jones got away nicely from the line and remained in the lead. Reutemann besides him got off slower and dropped down to fourth behind Villeneuve and Piquet who had a cracking start from sixth in the grid. Arnoux was fifth and Alfa Romeo's Regazzoni sixth before Daly, de Angelis and the McLarens.

By the end of first lap Cheever had gone past the McLarens into P9 and tried an opportunistic move on de Angelis into turn 1 of second lap. De Angelis wasn't expecting the move and the two made contact. The Williams driver spun and got collected by Fittipaldi. Both retired and the Brazilian double world champion's luck just doesn't seem to change. Meanwhile further up the field Reutemann was struggling slightly and had dropped to sixth behind Arnoux and Regazzoni.

As usual, there was a lot of shuffling in the following laps. First casualty was Villeneuve whose fragile Renault engine suffered a painful death. Championship contender Scheckter was having an appaling race in 11th and his day ended in a crash. His teammate Pironi had much better speed, the Frenchman was up to 8th after first round of pit stops in lap 30. Top-6 at this moment was Jones, Daly, Arnoux, Reutemann, Regazzoni and Cheever. Piquet had had a longer pit stop and was down to 7th. Lauda, Rosberg and Tambay were battling with Pironi for 8th place.

Jones's lead didn't last long and this time he can only blame himself. The Australian crashed his Ferrari in lap 38 and wasn't able to continue. Soon there was a Ferrari back in the lead as Reutemann had found his pace, perhaps thanks to new tyres and was suddenly leading the race after second round of pit stops. Piquet too had fought back and was fighting fiercely for second with Daly. Arnoux's Renault had lost its oil pressure, adding to the disappointing début of the new car. His retirement meant that Regazzoni was now in fourth but Cheever was closing on him. Tambay and Rosberg were battling for sixth but two laps later Rosberg pulled to the side of the road too after failed gearbox in lap 48.

In the closing laps Daly, who had got past Piquet earlier, was closing on race leader Reutemann but the Argentinean was able to hold the Irishman within a safe distance and claimed his fourth win of the season. Daly was second and Piquet third. Cheever gave his everything trying to get past Regazzoni but the experienced Alfa driver defended tremendously and got Alfa Romeo the team's first points in nearly 30 years! Niki Lauda had a solid drive for sixth after passing Tambay with a few laps to go. Brabhams in 8th and 10th had one of their best races this season but they will surely not be too happy about it. Thanks to Regazzoni's three points the prestigious team has now dropped down to 13th in the championship standings.
