My wild assumption is that it has something to do with shaping the airflow around the sides to keep the airflow underneath the car undisturbed.

The front wing attachment seems to be different in every press photo, and quite different from the actual car unveiled in Melbourne. Any word on what's correct? What was shown in Melbourne is rather unique compared to other teams.
