Any tips for Career N2 Race 3 BMW M3 E30 Step1?

I've had AC since it was first released on early access, but I've only recently started to look at the career mode. I've already progressed beyond the N2 level, but I keep coming back to this race and just can't keep pace with the newer cars. Other than turning down opponent difficulty are there any tips for racing the M3 E30 Step1 against the newer models? It doesn't seem to be a match for power or through turns. I am able to out-brake if I catch them early, but that seems to be the case with the AI in general regardless of the car. What are the strengths of the M3 E30 Step1 that I can use to my advantage?

I've looked at some videos of this race, but they don't mention their difficulty settings and the AI opponents seem slower than mine.

I drive with a DFGT and assists off (except auto-clutch).

Any suggestions?
