Without much in the way of racing to keep them entertained, the dominant Mercedes Formula One team have turned their attention to the development of potentially life saving respiratory devices to assist the worldwide fight against COVID-19.

Many of the British based Grand Prix teams have joined together in an initiative called 'Project Pitlane', as they look to utilise their highly advanced research and development arms in a bid to support the development and manufacturer of respiratory devices for use in healthcare services around the world.

Formula One have confirmed engineers at Mercedes HPP, engineers at University College London (UCL) and clinicians at UCL Hospital have developed a new breathing aid that has recently been approved for use by the UK's National Health Service for production to support the continued battle against the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

Having secured an incredible ten Drivers and eight constructors World Championship successes in recent years, the talented team at Mercedes High Performance Engines have worked alongside colleagues at UCL to create something called a ‘Continuous Positive Airway Pressure’ (CPAP) device - which according to F1.com is 'a breathing aid that helps coronavirus patients with serious lung infections to breathe and avoid having to use ‘invasive mechanical ventilation’ – breathing devices that involve tubes through the skin or mouth'.

Andy Cowell, Mercedes HPP’s Managing Director, said:

“The Formula 1 community has shown an impressive response to the call for support, coming together in the ‘Project Pitlane’ collective to support the national need at this time across a number of different projects.
“We have been proud to put our resources at the service of UCL to deliver the CPAP project to the highest standards and in the fastest possible timeframe.”

The group have been working on reverse engineering the designs since March 18th, and are already in a position to start producing these potentially life saving units.

I have heard McLaren have a medical division. Making hospital beds because they have hydrolic cylinders underneath to elevate and lower parts of the bed. Identical to systems used in suspension.

Also Williams use there technology on buses in New York.

Give an F1 team a chance at designing something for medical use and in 6 days or less you will have something ready to go into Hospitals around the world thats how fast F1 develops stuff!
