They did. Looking at the code, they've switched to the .webp format instead of .jpg
Better compression, so it saves space on the servers.
But presumably the forum-engine doesn't recognize it, removing the option to direct-link it.

The image tag will reject it as bad input. Even if it was allowed webp is a Google project and only has native support in chrome based browsers atm (Chrome, Opera and android browsers). Most of the images I looked at just now on 9gag appear to be jpg (on desktop at least), so I guess they are either delivering file types selectively (different in the app for instance where they control the whole stack) or it just happens that those images where uploaded in webp.
