Leave circuit without retiring

Hello,

I am new to rFactor, having decided recently to upgrade from F1 Challenge. Mostly fine, but getting annoyed that I don't seem to be able to leave the track without it classifying as retirement. In F1 challenge, if I wanted to leave, I could restart the race and press ESC to go to the pit garage, where leaving will save that I am pre-race and allow me to race when I am ready. With rFactor, however, when I try to replicate this using Exit to Monitor, leaving the track counts as a retirement. I don't want to retire, I want to race later. Can anyone help me change this?

Should point out this is in races against the AI, not trying this in an online race.

You could just press the space bar which pauses the game.
