The first race I ever photographed was the 1973 Indy 500. I was 9 years old. These are the 7 photos I took. The only shot of race cars showed Johnny Rutherford, Bobby Unser, and Mark Donohue coming around for the start. Not very impressive photos.
As you may know, the race was one of the darkest in Indy history. At the start, there was a terrible crash involving Salt Walther and nearby spectators. After the accident, the race was rained out until 2 days later. When the race was run, Swede Savage hit the wall in front of us and died. Truely horrible.
