General Optimizing kn5 possible hotfix?

So, if you open a kn5 file with the text editor and you take a look you can actually see all the textures inside. So now comes my question. Would it be possible to replace all the png's in the txt file with dds's and create a skins folder in which you rename all the textures of the kn5 from png or whatever to dds?
NOTE: This is not for the track or car creators but for the people using the mods, but who want better performance
 
IIRC, you'll have to export your dxt# .dds files as usual to a skin folder, but then rename them with the original .png extension to match what file the kn5 looks for. AC will then handle them properly, even if the file has a wrong extension.
