I think he used 1988 as the deadline, as it was the first season with massive changes to the cars

Any F1 car shape of any era will be accepted, preferably not too much earlier than 1990, [...]

Unwritten rule is that I prefer after 1990, but that 1988 was acceptable. Anything previous to that is increasingly unlikely to be accepted.
