Dick Johnson’s infamous accident during the 1980 Hardie-Ferodo 1000 remains arguably the most controversial moment in Australian motorsport.

After being largely a mid-field competitor throughout the early stages of his career, Dick Johnson burst onto the scene in the 1980 edition of the Bathurst 1000. The Queenslander qualified his Tru-Blu backed XD Falcon on the front row of the grid, alongside the Chevrolet Camaro of Kevin Bartlett and ahead of championship-leader Peter Brock....
