Skins Skin tutorial/basics?

Hi all,
I'm looking for a good skinning tutorial for AC, so I can learn with the aim of making skins and eventually maybe car packs? I have GIMP, and I've read that can only deal with 2d skin creation (i.e. no 3d model preview), but honestly I'll work around that if true. I need to know, for example, where to find skin templates, the basics of skin design, tips for making stuff line up, exporting, so on.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Some things work better now with CM but most of it still applies the same way.
