Test: CPU Core count and RAM scaling in ACC, AC1 and R3E

Hello guys

Couldn't find decent data so I did these tests myself during the holidays.

  • Max settings @ 720P (Max distances, Max shadows, Max mirrors etc) to push for the max cpu drawcalls.
  • Heavy duty multiplayer race replays were used, with 20~30 cars.
  • 1 entire lap per test. With the camera set on the pole car, looking backwards (showing all 30 cars - worse case scenario), at the race start, lasting an entire lap
  • 2 runs per test.

So a quick summary from what I see in the charts:
1) 4 cores are desireable, regardless of the sim.
2) Hyperthreading never helps.
3) Better RAM speed will help anyone having borderline fps computer (by 5%-10%) and DDR4 2666 is always a poor choice.
 
The RAM tests, have they been done with hyperthreading on?

Given the different reactions of AC1 and ACC to both hyperthreading and RAM speed (ACC much more sensitive) I have a feeling that RAM speed becomes less critical for ACC without hyperthreading. The hyperthreading is clearly overloading something, and while the L1 cache is probably the most affected I can see how the useless/harmful additional parallelism also overtaxes the RAM, needlessly.

What gets me wondering though are the HT on results.
Maybe this behaves differently on different CPUs?
With my I7 2600k I get higher fps in AC1 when I activate HT.
Or better said: when I tested to deactivate it my fps clearly went down.

But I was at around 70 fps back then so maybe there's something regarding time available between frames to fill caches or something...

I'll test it again in a more scientific way and come back with my results! :)

No, not really. Except for ACC which stops scaling and actually gets worse after 5 cores.

The Ram speed should be a wakening call for most people who only buy 2666mhz with even lower CAS latencies. Look at that drop in AC1 from 3200 down to 2666. Ouch

Edit: AC1 Ram graph was wrong. Its fixed now

Great work. So basically three cores at 5 GHz is enough to play any of these modern sims at 60+ FPS. Curious also about the HT results, it looks like HT performs exceptionally badly in the case of four cores, but doesn't experience the same loss with six or eight cores. Intuitively you would think HT would benefit more in the case of lesser cores, at least this was always the case with the old two core i3's. Well, anyway, it goes against the mantra that four cores + HT is now needed for modern games, at least it's not the case with the latest Unreal engine.
 
Great work. So basically three cores at 5 GHz is enough to play any of these modern sims at 60+ FPS. Curious also about the HT results, it looks like HT performs exceptionally badly in the case of four cores, but doesn't experience the same loss with six or eight cores. Intuitively you would think HT would benefit more in the case of lesser cores, at least this was always the case with the old two core i3's. Well, anyway, it goes against the mantra that four cores + HT is now needed for modern games, at least it's not the case with the latest Unreal engine.

I think that if you give the game enough physical cores to run optimally, enabling HT after that point increases the chance windows will assign some tasks to run on HT threads instead of physical threads. With HT off every thread will always be a physical core.

I'm now interested in seeing 2 cores + HT. Maybe i'll run it this weekend.

I agree with the rest of your post, but this might be correct but might also be totally incorrect. If you run an rpg type game on the unreal engine it might well be that NPCs, world streaming and all that stuff are running on additional cpu threads. Just because simracing with the physics from Kunos can't be split further we shouldn't think the unreal engine doesn't support it with different scenarios.

Are you saying that if he does an AI test with same conditions, you’ll see that load on additional cores?

I think it’s clear to see that non AI scaling is similar to AC1 but with a 90fps penalty overhead which leads to poor performance esp in VR.

No, not really. Except for ACC which stops scaling and actually gets worse after 5 cores.

The Ram speed should be a wakening call for most people who only buy 2666mhz with even lower CAS latencies. Look at that drop in AC1 from 3200 down to 2666. Ouch

Yeah ram is often overlooked. Even more impactful in VR where min FPS = reprojection.

CPU freq scaling might be an interesting one. Going from 4.8 all core to 5.2 all core. Just like 6 core no HT since that seems to be max in any scenario.

Couldn't find decent data so I did these tests myself during the holidays.

  • Max settings @ 720P (Max distances, Max shadows, Max mirrors etc) to push for the max cpu drawcalls.
  • Heavy duty multiplayer race replays were used, with 20~30 cars.
  • 1 entire lap per test. With the camera set on the pole car, looking backwards (showing all 30 cars - worse case scenario), at the race start, lasting an entire lap
  • 2 runs per test.

Really impressive amount of work here :)
One question though , you did these tests yourself with a direct die cooled 9900k @ 5.2GHz yet you have a 2700X @ 4.3GHz as your own gaming rig according to your sig . Do you prefer to game on the Ryzen chip for any reason in particular ?
