Formula 1 enters the season finale of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with the driver’s championship leaders tied on points.

After a roller coaster ride of a season in F1, the final event of 2021 will be held in Abu Dhabi and will decide the championship battle between Max Verstappen or Lewis Hamilton. The two drivers are even on points entering the race.

Verstappen has won more races this year than Hamilton, so if the two end up finishing even after this race due to neither scoring points, the championship would go to Verstappen. Momentum seems to be with Hamilton after back-to-back-to-back race wins in Brazil, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, though points momentum has never lasted long this season.

The Yas Marina circuit is a location where both drivers have won in the past, with Hamilton having won numerous times at the track, and Verstappen being the most recent winner. The layout has been altered for 2021 to encourage more overtaking.

Looking away from the feature act of this race weekend, the constructor’s battle between Mercedes and Red Bull seems to be all but decided, with Mercedes holding a 28-point advantage. With Hamilton and Verstappen cancelling each other out on points, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas have been involved in a lower profile battle than their teammates, but one full of surprises just the same.

This will also be the last time we see certain drivers in F1, or the last time we see them with their current teams. Perhaps the biggest departure is Kimi Räikkönen, who will retire from driving after Abu Dhabi. Kimi’s teammate, Antonio Giovinazzi, will also vacate his F1 seat after this season and will race in Formula E next year instead. One of the Alfa Romeo team seats will be filled by Bottas, who will finish this year third in the driver’s standings. His current seat at Mercedes will be filled by George Russell.

This looks to be an exciting finish to a season filled with drama and shocking moments. Let’s hope that we see the best from each of the championship contenders this weekend.

Honestly that is in all probability true. Compared to Mercedes every other car on the grid is a Rent-a-Wreck.

Edit - That's not doing Hamilton down at all, but IMO Verstappen looks like he is shaping up to be the next Senna.
And if not we can just say Lewis had the faster car

Cannot wait for tomorrow. Humbling interview by Hamilton post quali, and shame on all of the booers.

Will be happy if either drivers win tomorrow, just hoping for some epic clean fair racing.

Potentially seeing McLaren on the podium again will also be the icing on the cake. Nando will make his mum well proud.

Epic epic season.

I'm getting so sick and tired of the booing, wether it's towards Lewis or Max... I always loved how racing fans could sit among eachother and enjoy themselves, now it's becoming more and more like football which is just sad. can't deny that the dutch fans have had some influence in this but i hope that the actual fans know better than this :(
I'll say it here first: next year we will see the first fights on the grandstands between "fans" just like with (football) hooligans. F1 has unfortunately attracted the wrong crowd during lockdown it seems.

Incredible how stupid some of these clowns behave on a race track. I hope FOM / FIA will do everything possible to get rid of them asap.

I hope Max wins his first championship! The British press has really disturbed me this week with the video clip merry christmas. and if Max is the only one who drives dirty.. blah.. blah they really did everything they could to get him off balance But Max just stays sober 24 years respect for that then you are very strong just like on Zandvoort

If not.. he has at least shown this season that he can challenge Hamilton in a lesser car. So for me Max is the champion and he deserves it. But Lewis is quite lucky the rocket merc is the best car without a doubt so I'm crossing my fingers

Merc is probably still faster in the race I think. We only got pole because Max's lap was perfect, the perfect tow, and Lewis did make some small mistakes on both of his laps, imo.
But overall, for the closeness of the championship it's definetly better that Max is leading, and that Bottas is out of the game, so he can't provide much assistance to Lewis.
I predict Checo will hold up the pack behind Lewis (and Lando) to allow Max to pit safely, as he will have to pit before Lewis. Then, depending on whether Max opts for 1 stop or 2 stop, we can have a proper race at the end with one catching the other on fresher tyres.

Had my attention drawn to a VERY interesting article....good reading for some Hamilton fans to get a bit of perspective regarding dangerous driving etc.

Also I had a thought (just a little back of the head thing ;) ) Lando's posted a lot on social media supporting Hamilton and critical of Max.....Lando has a Merc engine in his McLaren and sits right behind Max, a bit late on the brakes and he can gift Lewis the WDC!! (hopefully not, tin foil hat stuff!).

Why would Alonso's mother be proud if McLaren wins the podium?

Not trying to start a comment war are we?

But this article does show one thing: everyone makes mistakes. Max has made some pretty big ones in the last few races, but Lewis has made plenty in the past as well (2011 being a very notable year with many incidents in it). Max's braking in Saudi was reckless and dangerous, and he was penalised for it. It just so happened that the penalty had no effect (which isn't unusual). I think 10 seconds was probably fair, although I would have rather seen a grid penalty.

I don't think it warranted a DSQ, or ban, or anything like that unless it can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that it was deliberate, which would be extremely difficult. I'm using the beyond reasonable standard of proof because I expect any punishment like that would end up either at the very top of the FIA courts, or the Court of Arbitration for Sport (or potentially even further), where proper legal standards apply. If they can prove it was deliberate, then DSQ him, ban him; he would deserve it. But unless you can meet that standard of proof it will be very difficult to apply such a penalty.

That's what I hope for Max. I was watching the 2011 BBC review on YouTube the other night and I thought that Lewis and his driving that season (granted he had a massive amount of distractions that season, Nicole's fine ass, management reshuffle, dad being shuffled out the equation and no family attending races). But his Monaco antics in particular made me think that maybe Max will grow out of this, because I'm sorry, I know Max fans are going to come flying out the wood work pitch forks aloft, but his driving this season has been genuinely worrying at times. With a level of disdain for others he goes wheel to wheel with. Much like Lewis in 2011. Ask Felipe! Here's hoping Max blossoms into something even more incredible than he is now -THAT would be something. We face a future full of battles with LeClerc/Lando/George and possibly Ocon once Lewis retires and leaves Merc.

Unless Lewis has a much better start then Max, Lewis won't take the risk of passing Max in turn one, and if no yellow flags play a factor should win on strategy. Max will need to either back Lewis up enough to bring others into play, which is not how Max races, or put in quali laps all race in order to pass Lewis on track at the very end of the race on a two stop strategy with soft, soft, hard tires, with Lewis on a one stop with medium, hard. Although Max did a great job getting pole, not starting on mediums takes strategy out of his hands a fare bit. Track position is still a good thing, but he will have to be on the ragged edge all race, which will risk reliability, spinning, and mistakes in the pit lane. Pretty stressful, but that's why these guys are the best. Or, something completely unforeseen can happen, as this is real life racing and not a sim haha. If Max pulls it off I'll be the first one to be very happy for him as a hard core Lewis fan. To me, whether Lewis wins is not important. If you are a true racing fan you watch because you love racing, and can also recognize and appreciate the talent that different guys posses, regardless of who you cheer for, or where you are from. This season has been epic, and it will be all but over tomorrow. Let's just hope next year is half as exciting as this one. Enjoy the race everyone!

Completely agree, I am 100% supporting Max, but not respecting the opposition is sickening. How the hell did this loutish behaviour infect racing, I thought it was the gentleman's sport.

Nice post, I for one feel like a kid on Christmas eve. :)

If the attorney of the Fluminense don't get involved again, Max will be the 2021 champion.

I think the media (e.g. that merry christmas commercial from Sky Sports is just one example), but also the F1 teams themselves play a big part in this. And don’t forget the toxic social media, which we did not have before on previous rivalries between 2 drivers. And unfortunately others sports have become worse as well… when spectators returned to the stadiums this year in Dutch soccer stadiums, a small part was behaving very poorly. These people are no fans… they are just hooligans.
