Formula 1 returns to Europe for the 2022 season for the first time, with the field taking on Imola for the Emilia Romagna GP.

Last minute venue changes became common place for Formula 1 in 2020 due to COVID, and this led to the return to a popular circuit in both real life and sim racing, Imola.

This weekend, F1 is back in action at the Italian site for the 2022 Elimia Romagna GP, or Formula 1 Rolex Gran Premio Del Made In Italy E Dell'Emilia-Romagna 2022 as the kids like to say.

Ferrari flawless

Ferrari and Charles Leclerc's nearly flawless start to the 2022 campaign positions them as the obvious favourite for this weekend. A slight pace advantage, and a significant reliability advantage have put them comfortably ahead of Red Bull what looked to be a two-horse race after Bahrain. Leclerc has amassed an impressive 71 points over three races, with George Russell of Mercedes in second place with just 37 points.

Mercedes being second in the constructor's championship after three races wouldn't have been a bold prediction last year, but an obvious deficit in race pace have left the silver arrows at the mercy of Red Bull's reliability, which to date has worked out favourably for Mercedes.

Hamilton and Verstappen

Similarly, a prediction in 2021 of Lewis Hamilton being three points ahead of Max Verstappen entering the fourth race of the season wouldn't have shocked many people, but the fact that the points gap separates them in fifth and sixth positions in the driver's standings might have been harder to comprehend.

An exciting mid-field battle full of surprises has emerged so far this season, with McLaren, Alpine, Alfa Romeo, Haas and AlphaTauri all being within 14 points of each other in the championship.

Sprint races

This is the first F1 Sprint weekend of the year. Friday's sessions include one practice, and qualifying for the sprint race. Saturday will see the drivers take to the grid of the second and final practice session, followed by the sprint race. And finally, on Sunday the race will take place, with the starting order having been determined by the results of the sprint race.

The added race time on Saturday will put even more pressure on the teams who have yet to establish reliability with their 2022 cars. Add to that a weather forecast calling for a mix of sun, cloud and rain, and this should be a very exciting race weekend.

Schedule

  • Free practice 1 - 22 April | 13:30 - 14:30
  • Qualification - 22 April | 17:00 - 18:00
  • Free practice 2 - 23 April | 12:30 - 13:30
  • Sprint - 23 April | 16:30 - 17:00
  • Race - 24 April | 15:00 - 17:00

I been saying it for a decade
3 x 1/2 distance races
50KG lighter cars
Triple points
50% more race laps
50% more prime time advertising
Everyone wins

P.S.
Oh and youngsters ( the crowd they try to win over ) have the attention span of a gnat
Shorter races should have more of them watching ;)

the sprint was really really good, but just about impossible to defend a DRS pass.
shorten the DRS by 200 meters and sunday could be stellar, weather permitting.
just ask this guy!

I feel for Russell, I really do. He thought he was heading for a top tier car, but it's like he's gone from a Williams, into a (marginally better) Williams.
You have to look at the other way: Mercedes now hit by Russels always present bad luck.

Voted for Le Clerc, but I think Verstappen will win providing his car is up for a full race. Ferrari was bouncing massively compared to RB in the sprint race. Hats of to Newey and his team.

DRS is often very overpowered which by now has to be intentional as it's been around long enough to iron out such excesses. But hey some people are convinced this makes an exciting race, myself I'd rather watch 1 skilled overtake than 100 DRS breeze-bys .

As opposed to the Good Old Days, when a lot of "overtakes" were because the guy in front missed a shift...

I wouldn't call Verstappen's move on LeClerc yesterday a breeze-by. Especially with only one DRS zone to use, there was real drama in the closing laps regarding whether or not Max would be able to stay close enough to actually make the move.

The balance of power in that battle was perfect; without DRS at all it would've been obvious that LeClerc was going to win unless he made a major error. But if there were 3 DRS zones crammed in like the earlier rounds Verstappen would've blown by immediately. Evidence then that DRS has a place in F1 because you can never fully eliminate dirty air, but that a return to the early era where 1-2 DRS zones was the norm would make sense for this new generation of cars.

The effect of DRS at Imola is excessive. They acknowledged it after the Bottas-Russell crash and they forgot about it immediately because they just want a show.

With 23 GP, sprint races are totally unnecessary, except for getting more and more cash.

Btw Charles' name is Leclerc, not Le Clerc or LeClerc.

I love the DRS and hope they don't limit it in any way. If it is "so easy" to pass under DRS, then the overtaken car can just use it in the next lap as well to overtake back. Ooops, that is barely happening I wonder why. Overtaking with DRS is still only possible if you are faster then the car in front of you - which is totally fine.

Man you have to feel bad for Carlos...2 races in a row, stuck in gravel...and this one really wasn't his fault (and to happen in Italy is the ultimate salt in the wound).

Oh no, with no DRS drivers have to rely on racing skills and challenge themselves for overtakes. That's really bad for F1

Let's just make virtual races with ghost cars so that faster drivers don't need to overtake slower cars

No-one was ever arguing that wet races need DRS. The corners are slower and braking distances a lot longer so you can actually follow other cars and make moves on them without much assistance. With that being said they should enable it now that everyone's on slicks because the pace is going up and with that comes the return of dirty air.

sBinalla strikes on Ferrari's home turf! Leclerc down in 9th after needing a new front wing.
