Classic Sport Driving Is Giving Me Nostalgia For Something I Never Experienced

Have you ever had that feeling of fondness for something truly classic? That is nostalgia. Basically, it involves seeing something from the past through rose-coloured spectacles. But even for me, who is too young for the age of classic video game arcades, today, I received this nostalgia. All thanks to Classic Sport Driving.

Now if you decide to get this game or its demo, be careful! It's easy to get lost in the beautiful backdrops you can get while randomly generating your racetrack.

As I said, this whole game is giving off a feeling of the classic racing games from the age of arcades. Remember those?

Put in a quarter, grab the joystick and go.

The funny thing is, this game can be controlled with a joystick too if you have one. It is actually a recommended input device, together with your keyboard. Only analogue input devices are recommended to invoke the nostalgic feeling even more.

Now how does it work exactly?

Just bind your keyboard buttons and enter any keyphrase you want and you can go racing on a procedurally generated racetrack. You can even send your friends the keyphrase and race against their times! Every run is timed and your best time will shine up on the leaderboard.

Now what can I say more to convince you?
  • The graphics are beautifully minimalistic
  • The soundtrack is lovely (melodic electric music)
  • You can race an unlimited amount of tracks
  • It's available on Steam
From the short time I played this so far, I love the idea and execution and hope for a full release soon so everyone can enjoy this classic experience.

Have you tried this demo during the Steam Next Fest? What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments down below!

If anyone wants to really enjoy the past then emulation is the way. I've not updated my emulators for a while seeing as everything works. I went for Coin Ops Next 2 (now superseded) which various packs added on (basically drag and drop) and I've got literally all the old arcade driving games from Pole Position to Daytona 2 etc. Is it legal? Whatever it's old and I've already stuck my fair share of 50p pieces in over the years.

no wheel support. im out as well.

No original C64 "Arcade" joystick support, so I'm out as well.

(edit; just googled for my original old "Arcade" joystick set of which, unfortunately, was lost during a movement - tons of pics of Arcade joysticks, but none of the original solid and both basic but beautiful design?? history isn't preserved well here! :()

Yeah I do, good memories. My first experience with FFB was playing the sit-down arcade machine of Daytona USA and it really surprised me because I was like twelve or so years old and didn't know that those machines could do that :D

I currently play those old games on my handheld emulation console :)

The game reminds me a lot of Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 on Amiga (Watch from the beginning for the intro music)
Well done: that's reference #1!

Hi, I'm the dev for Classic Sport Driving.

I'm watching closely the wheel support / digital inputs discussion here...
And while I was thinking digital only at first, I'm really tempted now to try to support wheels from the word go...

I say "try", as I have no experience with them. ;)
Maybe some of you, with that experience, would like to help me getting the right feeling from a racing wheel, while taking part to our beta?

That would be great!

Just ordered a tmx. I know it's entry level... But's it's a first wheel... ;)

Sylvain.

rigs are purpose built for racing games with wheel support, good for watching porn as well though..

Old time arcades are a great way to blow off some steam, have a bit of fun while not wasting your whole day. They are great to be able to have a short amount of fun without a large time investment.

Just look at the game, its not meant for a wheel or pedals, its not a racing sim and I dont expect it to work well with a wheel anymore than I expect frogger to. It is what it is something that can give you fun in a different way.

And the pictured model you are also able to google.
The specific model I used vividly during 1985-1988 was sold videly in my country during these years and consisted of a much smoother, solid and elegant design with a black stick, a black base and red, round solid and elegant button.

I'm amazed that this model apparently wasn't world wide standard of the time, since a set of two of those came with both my original C64 from 1985 AND together eith my C64New from the following year as well, which in addition went for my friends in school/highschool as well.

Looks way better than the oldies tho. :D A lot of the magic back then for those young enough was that there had been nothing like it and combined with being young it became magical. Before these games you could do nothing but flip the channel, but all of a sudden you could control what was on the screen which was huge.

Iam lucky to have been parr of that and a few more big changes/innovations that changed everything.

Actually, the look can be a bit deceiving. There is more in the game than arcade... Or at least I try to!;)

Just tried the demo and hated it.

Generic tracks made by turns build after turns and are all the same turns. No straights, no different radius corners and no excitement. The game don't give any challenge as racing position or time limit... just the generic road with generic cars (that are the same model).

The sound department is even worst, with poor sound fx and a forgettable soundtrack.

The gameplay is just too crude, with a car behaving as a cardbox with a lot of understeering. It's the only thing that feels like an old 3rd/4th generation racing game, but it does in a not good way.

And the worst is that camera. It angles as if I was riding a scooter and it is (no joke or hyperbole here) THE FCKNG FIRST TIME I GOT MOTION SICK PLAYING A DMN VIDEOGAME! WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH THIS DEVS? Just do the basic. If you want to reinvent the wheel, just do a full modern game. If you are appealing to nostalgia, do what old games used to.

PS: I do racing game since Enduro for the Atari 2600 (back in 1983).
