Essential Mods You Need To Play GTR 2 in 2023

GTR2 Essential Mods 2023.jpg
GTR 2 is still a popular game. But a dedicated modding community has transformed it into an unrecognisable beast. Here are the most essential mods you need to play GTR 2 in 2023.

Spiritual successor is a term many a sim racer uses to describe some of the most talked about games currently on the market. In fact, Assetto Corsa, ACC and GTRevival are all said to be spiritual successors to an famous game from the past: GTR 2.

The official FIA GT racing game paved the way for more recent games in a number of ways. GTRevival is an upcoming title by the same core team that formed SimBin, the GTR 2 developers. Assetto Corsa Competizione is the official racing game to the SRO GT World Challenge, a descendant of the FIA GT Series in its own way. Finally, Assetto Corsa took the baton as the most moddable title on the racing game market.

But that is not to say that GTR 2 is a dead product in 2023. It is still available to purchase on Steam, and with some special mods, it can rival the quality of modern sims. Keep reading to find out what those mods actually are in our guide to essential mods to play GTR 2 in 2023.

GTR 2 Update 1.1 In Mod Form

As aforementioned, GTR 2 is still a popular title. Despite its age, having released in 2006, it is still available to purchase on the Steam Store for PC. One can pick the title up for around 8€ at its standard price. However, it regularly goes for discounted prices below the 5€ mark.

However, to remain on Steam, the developers have had to make concessions over the years. When the game was created, licencing deals for Ferrari and Porsche models – which make up a large amount of the base game content – were for a limited time. As a result, to stay on the market, the cars were removed from the title. Today, if you buy the game, you will only have access to the more niche models from the likes of Saleen, TVR and Lotus.

Thanks to the RaceDepartment community however, one can still complete the 2003 and 2004 FIA GT grids. The v1.1 Patch for GTR 2 reinstates all missing content, including the Ferrari and Porsche models from both the GT and N-GT classes. It also brings a few minor bug fixes, much like any game patch.

No-CD Patch

It is worth noting however that, after downloading the v1.1 patch, one will be met with a launch warning. In fact, the Steam version of the game is not designed to run update 1.1. As a result, the No-CD Patch works in unison with the aforementioned update.

Install the No-CD Patch and your game will run just like it did before, except this time, with the Ferrari and Porsche additions from v1.1.

Much like most GTR 2 mods, the No-CD Patch simply requires a drag and drop procedure. Copy the downloaded files and paste them to your GTR 2 install folder. Hit ‘Replace Files’ and you should notice a new shortcut for the game. Make sure to open the game via this new shortcut rather than your Steam Library.

GTR 2 Essential Mods: SHO Competition

Now the game is fixed, to its former glory, it is time to modernise it. On RaceDepartment, one can find a number of impressive mods to enhance GTR 2. However, some of the best creations have to be from RD user @Shovas, behind the SHO Competition collection.

The SHO Competition mod exists in two forms for GTR 2; one tackling the Force Feedback, another addressing AI issues.

In fact, the AI mod provides a number of tweaks to its functioning. A lot of the strange behaviour from AI on base content tracks disappears after installing the SHO Competition AI mod. Everything from early braking, strangely slow corner speeds and racecraft oddities are all far less frequent thanks to the mod.

Shovas FFB collection essentially provides a number of settings files to prevent players spending hours fine-tuning. However, it also brings a number of enhancements to the depth of Feedback. As a result, this already immersive title becomes even more so.

GTR 2 Anniversary Patch: All Mods In One

Scrolling through the RD mod list for GTR 2, one will notice a number of new shaders and graphical tweaks. But with so much to choose from, pin-pointing the perfect mod for one’s needs can be tricky.

However, there is an all-in-one mod to beautify the game. The GTR 2 Anniversary Patch was first released in 2018 and last updated in 2022. It combines a vast number of mods in one overhaul of the game. In fact, all four aforementioned mods feature in this collection. However, it also comes with graphical shaders, physics tweaks, improved car and track models and more.

As a result, the download is rather sizeable and can take its toll on lower end systems. Therefore, for those looking to experience GTR 2 in its original form, this hefty install may not be the way to go. Those looking to transform the game into a massive title, ready to run the plethora of car and track mods available, this mod is essential.

As part of the collection of mods in this Anniversary Patch is also the 4GB Patch, allowing the game to use 4GB of virtual memory rather than the original 2GB. Crucial for running larger grid sizes and at longer tracks, this small tweak will transform your GTR 2 experience.

By definition, explain why these mods are "essential". The default GTR2 will install and be quite enjoyable with no mods whatsoever, thus "essential" is a highly subjective appellation.

Nice article!

As a GTR2 mod harvester of the entire internet since birth of first mods I could totally flood this thread with "nice-to-have must haves".

However, I'm just asking the question in advance so we don't end up in trouble here;
The No-CD patch - isn't there something shady about it? I myself frankly admit to having used it from an early start, when I didn't want to use my CDs every time (yes several, in fact I managed partly due to distraction, partly as part of general SimBin Steam packages to buy the title a total of 4 times, of which 2 on CD).
But it's all fine sharing this patch feature info public here?
(probably hard to hide anyway since all GTR2 simmers are familiar to the patch anyway :D)

And yes, the PnG and GTL packs are of course in the must-have category for fans of the classics, right after the essentials, but there is so much more of a deeper ocean that I don't even dare to start.

GTR2 was my primary sim right when it appered on the surface, replacing my privious primary sims, until a year prior to Cov-19, during this time I dug everything up I could find from any (hopefully all non-shady) sites. And I keep doing it once in a while with the really nice historical mods that keep being updated.

But OK, for instance @GTR233's Targa Florio in the Porsche 906 of scca1981's work of the GTLegends GTR2 classic mod pack (couldn't resist a tryout in this GTR2 combo just after AC VR racing Abulzz' latest v.2.0.3 Targa work in the TC Legends Porsche 904/6).

And for VR racers I'll highly accomodate to use CrewChief's GTR2 VR-plugin.
Works splendid - however, requires Steam installation, of which I'll suggest to copy full GTR2 steam folder to dedicated GTR2 VR folder (preferable outside Steam folder).

Speaking GTR2 VR racing, my 1st to-do when acquiring my first VR headset soon 2 years ago was VR racing this combo:
The Alfa Romeo Giulia 1300 GTA Junior WB of the Power & Glory mod pack round the old house corners of barcika's Montagna di Pietra
Try CC VR racing it at night in a good blend of PnG classes. Excellent light work. Also at dawn or dusk with sunray effects.

Remember an incident in this VR combo getting heavy blocked round sharp house corner by an AI car, both car crashing, bursting into flames. And here I sat in my burning car, as a passenger, now just like free cam, and with 3D sound attached to my VR headset, suddenly I had the whole experience of roaring classics approaching from afar, the sounds that came dangerously closer down to the village steets behind the buildings - and suddenly they were approaching visually with big roar passing by. So immense. Like turning back time 60 years and actually being there.

Even in a dumbed-down sim like GTR2, above indicent remains my best immersive immersion to date :inlove:

And then I didn't even mention the little '72 Alfa. Quite simply perfect work when you consider 1-point tire modeling, such fine balance when you remember to turn off all AIDS, 100% manual clutch, etc. And then just floor it round the tight bends. Pure enjoyment.

Now the memories of other amazing combos come to mind, but I'd better stop. But there are also many good tools for the sim, which means that it is guaranteed to be interesting for newer generations who just recently have jumped on the simracing bandwagon.

Developers today could learn a lot by looking at GTR2. It was a complete sim back then - not just a bunch of random cars and tracks, but the simulation of a complete series. Which is why to me ACC is the spiritual successor to GTR2, as it has a very similar approach.

It's amazing how the team from Simbin went on to create so many great things after they spread out...

And then pCARS happened and now it's hard to trust many members of that team at all because of how much effort that went into simulating a race weekend in GTR2 that was simply missing from any pCARS title...

So much so they've had to go and revive GTR again because of how badly their last attempt of reviving it went...

ACC is it's successor in the spirit of the race weekend, rF2 is a close 2nd but is the spirit of the physics... And AC is it's successor in terms of mod-ability...

Whoa. How'd I miss this! Nice to see!

However, some of the best creations have to be from RD user @Shovas, behind the SHO Competition collection.

That's flattering but others are much more important for their contributions including GTR233 for HQ Anniversary Patch, The Iron Wolf for the Crew Chief GTR2 Enhancements Plugin (so much more than Crew Chief), Need_For_Speed for Get Real Physics, VLM tracks, the Power & Glory guys, and all the car, track, and other creators. I just try to make what they do more accessible for everybody!

I'll take this time to highlight some threads that I think are critical as they provide 'how to' guides for important things:

I've been specifically focused on trying to simplify how to get into GTR2, lately, and get it setup the way the veterans do because so much is undocumented.

There's a a handful of things to do after an initial GTR2 install but don't worry the game is playable after each one and you can come back another day to add in a new upgrade.

Good luck and have fun!

I would contend that all moddable racing sims have "essential mods"
Essential in the sense, without them you can't take it to the next level.

Taking things too literally is not the best idea.
Too often, we take something at its face value because we want to avoid the burden of thinking. Or we interpret what we see and hear in ways that align with our beliefs and values. :whistling: Or we quickly agree with an idea because it sounds like an easy way out.

Essential implies it is necessary for the game to run. As nice as the mod may be, that is not the case. For many games - race sims, flight sims, rpgs, whatever - there are mods which I install as soon as I (re)install the game, but they are not "essential" ...I can play the game without them.

Food is essential; a nice steak, no matter how delectable, is not.

I only stating my point of view not defending anyone. lol ;)

For some, actually I would say the majority at any BBQ I've been to that condiments can be essential to any steak or other meat to make it more delectable :p

One of the more talented video creators should make a video showcasing all of the improvements that make these mods literally essential. Actually "mod" isn't the right word anymore, unofficial "game patch" would be more appropriate and precise, these files transform the experience and beyond that fix some long neglected bugs.

Not always. The RSS cars may look and sound better, but the AI racing experience in AC is not good – whereas single player racing against AI is a strength of GTR2 (especially when modded e.g. with "SHO Competition AI").
The RSS and other paid mods have much improved ai. You really should try it. I would go as far as to say that with the right track and mod AC ai is much better than any of the old games.

Why with every article about some older game, there is always some guy saying "but AC has these cars already"?...

AC is nowhere near GTR2 in terms of a cohesive package, with all it's features. GTR2 has mid race saves ffs!

Plus, those RSS cars don't drive that good imo, i am sorry to say it.

The No-CD patch - isn't there something shady about it?

Technically they've always been "illegal". But as long as they are not being used to distribute pirate copies of software, devs and marketers have tolerated them. Even MS has been lenient about such patches for FlightSim.

I've used them for years simply because I did not like the idea of having to keep a stack of game CDs by the computer, shuffling them in and out of the drive as I played different games. Too much chance of damaging a disc (and would the dev send me a new one? lol), not to mention wear and tear on the optical drive. (I often wished there was a way to determine which files each game checked, then copy all of them to one rewriteable CD and leave that in the drive.)

And for software as old as GTR2, all involved have moved on to other projects, other companies ...they don't care.

What happened to the GTR2 HQ Mods Collection using JSGME? I used to use it along with the manual files of the Anniversary patch mods to combine both to make sure I had all the fixes & improvements and all their newest versions.....

Also, there were 2 different sets of improved default cars included. 1 was the HQ cars pack but there was another as well (I forgot the name). I remember testing both to see which physics I liked better...

I have this installed still but I can't remember if I ever installed the 20th Anniversary patch or not. What do I need to look for? Also, if I do have it installed, will it work with the Crew Chief plug-in?

You now get a command prompt installer to use with the Anniversary Patch. This allows you to individually choose whether or not to install a variety of HQ Mods and tweaks.

Yes, the Anniversary Patch and the Crew Chief plugin work well together.
