Max Verstappen rants after Virtual Le Mans debacle

This year's Virtual Le Mans 24h race, hosted on rFactor2 and featuring high profile racers, simracers and simracing personnalities, is raising a lot of criticism after the race was riddled with disconnection issues.

The race was red flagged twice due to server crashes, due to security issues according to the organizers, but resumed with rain turned off as an effort to put less strain on the game. Still, multiple teams continued to suffer from disconnects, including team RedLine #1 car, which was in contention for the win prior to that. Max Verstappen, one of the drivers assigned to that car, finally elected to retire from the race with approval from the rest of the team, before commenting on stream he would never participate in events hosted on that platform again.

The whole situation has been adding fuel to recent controversies surrounding Motorsport Games, the company behind the game and event. Many people have already jumped on it saying this was a bad look for simracing. Romain Grosjean, who posted a tweet dismissing the issues as similar to real life car failures (an unsurprising take considering he's the official technical advisor for MSG), was also met with a considerable wave of disagreement.

In the end, the #888 car from his own esports team, the R8G, won the GT class, while prototype and overall win went to RedLine's #2 car.

Truth be told, Max and every high level pro driver knows that rF2 is the most realistic sim. The big events should be on it. But in this case the organizer simply didn't want to pay what? 100-200$ for extra bandwidth, CPU, RAM for 2 days... Nothing to do with the sim, the organizers are cheap bastards. All you have to do is call the hosting provider & explain the situation, they'll send you the bill and that's it.
If you're afraid of DDoS, just allow the IPs from the racers in the host file.

In 24 hours people get new IP's from their ISP's.
Many IP addresses are dynamic nowadays.
The IP address I have today can be different from the one I have tomorrow.

EDIT: I also forgot to add that often, in real life, you actually add a bit of throttle to help plant the rear. This can even sometimes compensate for the wheelspin. I'll never forget when I saw F3.5 cars doing that...in the rain...Ya, don't try to apply that technique in-game, you'll just exaggerate the already explosive behaviour and end up in the wall.
Yep, the lack of a throttle map is weird. I drive a lot of cars(AC/ACC) on dusty track cold tires for fun & to learn car control. In many n/a it's amazing how much I can change direction just by lifting some 10%. Sometimes, this phenomenon with adding throttle for more grip works, but mostly on Porsches where it's normal...
Sorry but that is not true. Take a look at the ongoing Wijk aan Zee tournament, it's broadcasted live on youtube and twitch. You'll see physically fit top players like Carlsen, but also guys like Maghsoodloo who don't seem so keen about it. Tal has been world champion and among the top 10 for three decades with a single lung, a single kidneyn, 2 cigarette packs a day and god knows how much vodka.

Chk this out - 6000 calories a day playing chess! 1 kg of fat is 9000 calories.
Btw, Robert Sapolsky is a very famous neuroscience professor, the brain is quite energy hungry!

That doesn't mean it's a sport.

I agree that the lap should not be reinstated (as mentioned bad luck in real life also will not be reinstated), BUT after that this comparison runs out of road..

In real life, teams have the task to field and maintain their cars whereas the disconnect in this case seems to have been on the side of the server, and therefore the organisers.

This is a business transaction. For some reason, I have to bend my spine backward for sim developers when in any other tech niche nobody demands it. Go watch some gamers nexus, LTT, or Hardware Unboxed to see what I'm talking about.
Empathy should be with customers and not denying them it by shielding a piece of software from valid criticism.

Developers as individuals deserve respect. Their work is not entitled to. And yet, in any words Ive stated, I have not disrespected their work.
It's a piece of software and I'll treat it as such. If you want to become morality police over this, be my guest. It's not like the cat will go back in the box after this event.

Have a great day.
I agree for sure on anything informative to customers. It is just this specific rant coming from this specific person in this specific event, I can't accept ; it is just a huge lack of professionalism and maturity.

The rest, for sure, customers must know that something wrong happened during this event, but it would.be more informative to know what really happened (will we know?...). If something went wrokg and has nothing to do with rfactor2 as a software, well, the bad would have already been done.... this is the issue with the current way of inform the masses : it is reaction, not information. You want to be the first one to communicate, so you communicate what you have, nothing but the rant of a F1 Champion, who himself can't know what happened. This is absolutely not informative, on the contrary, it is misinformative.

Seems like a good time to mention iRacing had the 24H Daytona with 17,000 drivers and across 85 splits....not many people on RD talk about iRacing. It's USUALLY ONLY rF2, ACC, AC, R3E, AMS2. Why is that?

It would be nice to know how many servers had red flags because of server issues. Or server side disconnects. I would guess because the platform is almost exclusively online it probably had few if any. Also I am not an iracing user.

That would be correct sir zero red flags or server disconnects....

I would figure if anything, iracing knows how to host online events.
oh there is heaps of talk about all the cheating by team WIlliams that iRacing did nothing about..
iracing seems to have a history of having issue with some groups of people having liberties while others are punished for the same thing. Not that I believe all his claims, but Austin O has many vids claiming their is an in crowd with iracing, and if your not in it, you can be put out.

Yeah, there is always somebody out there trying to find an exploit. The point is 17 thousand drivers competed and it was a great event.
