Project CARS is Officially Dead

Project CARS, the project started by sim racing business veteran Ian Bell, will not live to see another game. After 3 games, Slightly Mad Studios announced the demise of the franchise today.

Slightly Mad Studios posted to their Twitter the following picture today:

This message announced the imminent demise of the Project CARS franchise, a once shining star on the sim racing horizon.

Currently, it is unclear what exactly led the studio to drop the development of the next game. What's for certain for many people, however, is that this is only one more nail in the coffin of, what many sim racers have seen for a long time, a waste of a franchise.

What started out as an enjoyable introduction for some to the sim racing world, became an arcade title by the most recent and third instalment.

And as seen by the message above, it seems like there will not be a fourth instalment coming.

In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, an EA spokesperson said: "Today we announced internally an update to our racing portfolio. Following an evaluation of the next Project CARS title and its longer-term growth potential, we have made the decision to stop further development and investment for the franchise.

"Decisions like these are very hard, but allow us to prioritise our focus in areas where we believe we have the strongest opportunity to create experiences that fans will love. We are focusing on our strengths in our racing portfolio, particularly licensed IP and open-world experiences, and expanding our franchises to be more socially-led with long-term live services that will engage global communities. Games are at the heart of sports and racing entertainment, and with shifting fan expectations, we recognise the need to evolve our games beyond pure play, providing experiences for fans to also watch, create and connect with their friends.

"We are working with everyone impacted by this decision to place them into suitable roles across our EA Sports and racing portfolio, as well as other parts of EA, wherever we can. Our priority now is on providing as much support as possible to our people through this transition."

Personally, I first started sim racing with a wheel on Project Cars 2, before switching to Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione. So this announcement doesn't go past me without any emotion.

But more importantly, what do you think of this announcement? What is your history with the Project CARS franchise? Let us know in the comments down below!

I would like to know in what exactly they "failed".

The AI had problems with various combos yes. Show me one of the so called "big sims" that doesn't.

Sales wise, Pcars2 did pretty well, but it was a slow burner in that regard, probably not helped by the army of haters and youtubers that vouched anything Ian Bell is involved is to be hated long time ago.

Physics? They all make compromises, they all dumb down a few things. Let's be real here, you can tell yourself "race cars are easy to drive" as much as you want, but the cold hard truth is most "simracers" can't even haul a bunch of pixel triangles in their screen properly, much less a real fire breathing machine. So talks about which one dumbed down the better (or worse) is as silly as it sounds.

Unfortunately the slow sales initially sealed the fate of it's successor, PCars3, with the lead designers at the time just giving up on "hardcore sims", and cutting down the "unecessary" elements of it, because everybody just seemed to want to do 5 lap races online, right?...
Indeed, most of online races where 2 to 5 laps races! Except when in a league for sure.

Wouldn't be surprised if an earthquake destroyed Polyphony Digital's HQ and everyone here celebrated because simcade XD
Maybe it's a kind of mirror of the site administration. For example, They deleted my track from Assetto Corsa mod session without a warning, losing all reviews and forum posts alleging "external link" which I have removed 2 months ago. The destructive spirit is on the air.

I wouldn't call it the "middle ground". The middle ground would have been to have at least half the cars and slightly better physics than Forza and GT (but still simple), plus tuning and customization.
They chose to have a lot less cars, much more realistic physics (for the most part) and no other features except progression. So obviously they didn't aim for the middle ground. They were way over it and in simulator territory.
The problem is that they failed. They said it themselves that they bit more than they could chew. So, saying that they tried competing with simcades with HUGE content or aiming for a "middle ground", is like living in denial or something.
and what part of "in many respects" did you fail to comprehend? They wanted content rich games with very good simulation physics. It was clear they bit off more than they could chew, I have said so myself many times in discussions over the game. And it's basically what I said, they had a limited amount of time ,so couldn't polish everything up to the highest level. IF they had the time to polish every car up to the same level as the best in the game then Pcars 1+2 would have been some of the very best sims on the market IMO.

What's this "living in denial" shite?

OK. Forza Horizon games and even Need for Speed games are SIMULATORS then. Yes? OK....whatever....
Depends if they have purposefully unrealistic behaviour programmed in for gaming reasons...which I believe both do so no not sims per se, but they do simulate some aspects of reality.

I really do expect a certain level of common sense intelligence from people.

On the internet? Not always the norm :)

You could even extend the argument to any game being sim. Super Mario simulates Italian plumber in world not as our own, saving a princess, by going on a killing spree in 2D xD

PC1 was the most overhyped game in the 21st century.
PC2 still doesn't grab my attention.
PC3 is just a joke in my eyes...

RIP Project CARS 2015-2022

etc.
Don't you dare putting **** on top of all the gems!!!!!

PC1 had promise
PC2 was ok, but disappointing
PC3 was just trolling 'hardcore simracers' by that point
Project CARS was a fun simcade racer on Playstation back in the day. PC2 failed to make good on the promise, and we all know what happened to PC3. Shame to see a promising name go down on flames, but they brought it upon themselves.

Too bad they abandoned PC2 after a year and moved development to PC3.

When pCars was released I was in the minority that wrote it off because of pure feeling which was virtually non existent.

But the majority claimed the constant updates were going to improve everything.
Tell me how did all that go for you ? ;)

Well Durge...PC1 and PC2 I could not quite get the FFB on my wheel feeling right even with trying out 3rd Party custom Profiles, and having to contently tweak the FFB in every car was problematic, and while some cars feel awesome 'Merc Saber', some did not do good at all....all just my personal observation and opinion;)....will continue to search / try out custom profiles though:)

PC3 on the other hand did have a more consistent FFB and car Physics handling, although the FFB was dumbed down a bit, but it was all there just lacking detail, I was more than happy with this knowing it slotted into the Arcade Racer Genre.

In PC3, the Photo Mode was improved greatly, although it had the same functionality as PC2, but with better speed / blur blending within the composed image on the Triple Screen Screenshots as opposed to PC2 where I could see clear areas where the speed blur would just stop creating a distinct line within the Triple Screen Screenshot, but PC2 had better graphics, sharper and more detail, to my eyes.

These are the main items that concern me with my Sim Racing hobby...so that's how well it all went for me:);)

At the end of the day...'Sim Racing is an Individual Pursuit'

The majority was proven correct by Reiza, with constant updates, the madness engine is much improved and can deliver a simulation experience". Slightly Mad as developers failed to support their software very quickly, this last development is just the last logical step.

"We are focusing on our strengths in our racing portfolio, particularly licensed IP and open-world experiences, and expanding our franchises to be more socially-led with long-term live services that will engage global communities." So they think the game failed; not because they butchered its entire identity and turned it into an arcade racer, but because it wasnt an open world live service game. Like seriously, they really list their biggest strength in racing games as licensed IP. Not physics, not accurately reproduced tracks, not anything to do with racing; the thing their proudest of is being able to pay someone to use their IP

Much closer to Reddit IMO.

4Chan is at least funny because it's blatantly insane. Reddit is just full of astronomically bad takes.

Looking at the dictionary definition of "simulation", nope. A game that more or less looked like Mario in almost every way would indeed be a "simulation" of a Mario game, but the Mario game itself doesn't "simulate" anything, it was (as far as I'm aware) the first platformer to have an Italian Plumber saving a princess. :)

Also in regards to our hobby "sim/simulation" means the simulation of "reality" specifically around vehicles. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but for something to be an exact copy warts and all of every single detail...that would be "emulate"?

EA is WallStreet making games for the 11- to 15-year-old males knowing Mommy will foot the bill, give enough content of say 1 month's interest then pitch them, or sucker them into new hype. King of Arcade racing. Nothing magical will ever come out of EA. Zero interest in most everything they touch. EA'S passion is strictly Cash driven. Just my opinion of course.
