Silverstone Will Be Retired From rFactor 2

silverstone_rf2.jpg
This is unfortunate news for rFactor 2 fans. One of the iconic free tracks of the service will be retired from public access on Friday morning due to licensing problems.

This news has been published on studio397 forums and apparently sounds like an expiring license problem. Original Silverstone license for the game dates back from 2012 when the sim was still developed by ISI and renewing one of these licenses is not always an easy task.

"Due to a change in licencing agreements, this Friday, November 25th, Studio 397 have been instructed to remove access to the Silverstone circuit in the rFactor 2 Steam Workshop."

"Players can still download the circuit until the morning of Friday November 25th, and can continue to use the track within rFactor 2 beyond this date."

Silverstone was one of the main pieces of the free base content, so Studio397 plans to add a new track as soon as they can.

"While we appreciate this is not the news anyone wanted to hear about this track, we are working very hard to look at alternative options to bring another new, free circuit to the simulation in the very near future"

You can still download the track for private use beyond 25th November by clicking this Steam's link.

NO it is NOT lol

If it disappears and you simply activate the backup STEAM will DELETE IT . lol

It must be put into a rfmod that is already installed before you boot into Steam.
Then you just hit refresh and the "mod" will now activate once more and no matter what Steam does it can't be removed.

No more tips for you lot no one listens. :coffee:
So steam will delete even you install it from the packages folder?

Pretty sure they do B ....or everyone would still have the 2 Nissans right ? ;)

1. You can't put more then 25 car models in rfmod so you can't make one big one to protect everything. So with all content in at least one rfmod each Steam can't even remove old versions of DLC till you are ready. ;)

==============
edit while I have you who do I have to bribe to make a new version of Community Mod. I will pay whatever $100US to have it done properly.

I have no trouble with SR4L using the mod without asking me or you or Mat.
What I am not happy with is they did not put all skins ( only 38 regulars not 49 as should be)
Second thing is if you have SR4L and Community mod activated when you go to all tracks our mod will only have like a dozen cars all the rest are missing.

So I want community mod as is but with SR4L physics and engine tuning.

So you are saying if one needs to rebuild the system you loose it for ever then. That sucks... I still have the pre steam at least.

I many not have the the latest F3 mod(Just the last version I sent you I think "2.0DX11")... but re-packagin it should be easy I think.

No you don't have to lose anything.

1. To do this you never ever use the rfactor2 packages folder.
That should be totally empty except for rfmods.

2. You can make as many "packages" folders as you like and put them anywhere

So if your packages folder looks like mine Steam can't remove anything.
Steam needs the content to be in packages which is why I said for 10 years never to put content in default packages folder , like never.

So if I install it from lets say c:\SteamCanSuckIt\Packages then I'll be able to keep Silversone and the Nissans?

Exactly if Steam can't find it you golden ;)
I make packages folders in my Sim patches / rfactor2
Even then I divide the packages into....... well check the screen out.

Anyone out there still have the non DLC Monaco for FE ? I missed backing that one up.
Can't find it in steam browser or anywhere else.

I also make "mods" for all mastemp files and rfms using OVGME so anytime I can load them to edit in MAS2 quickly rather then remaking the whole rfmod.

If making a rfmod fails you are screwed you have to make new rfmod from scratch because it will corrupt the rfm and you have to remember all content down to the skins you added.

But if you backup like I have below you can restore all rfmod and rfm files in a click ;)
Well you can't do it to the DLC or Woo's Endurance pack for some reason it CTDs MAS2
Those you have to rebuild but with mods backed up you can use them as a guide to remake at least.

Use existing rfms that are backed up in mod manager as a guide for all content used.
Makes remaking the whole mod easy just put Mod manager and Mas2 beside each other and scroll the lists ;)

Instead of holding ctrl key while you pick all the content use onscreen k/B and click Ctrl, leaves both hands free ;)

F*** these greedy track owners with their licenses. They are also the reason we don't have all the tracks in ACC. I hope Silverstone makes a comeback in rf2 with some fictional name. Seriously, I hope all sims start making unlicensed versions with fictional names to give a middle finger to these greedy track owners

I suspect this has a lot to do with this years bad press and lack of a BTCC game...

The BRDC probably upped the asking price to what MSGS cannot afford to loan right now...

What rFactor2 really needs before more content....imho

1. More user friendly way of hosting.
2. ditto for uploading and linking server content.
3. Most important, once you have 1. and 2. done you need every 5th person who even thinks they may like rF2 to host a server. You can host and join room 1 PC .
4. League types need to devote some time, not much to open rooms, help out even if sharing a setup and showing rookies around.

Thing is you learn 500% more about sims in garages talking.
People never been online used to come into F3 Rookies complaining
about this and that, by the time they left majority were loving it.

I always honest about rF2 shortcomings and hosting is too much drama for your average Joe.

I suspect this has a lot to do with this years bad press
I think it was from the very first sites reviewed on switch to Steam , pCars AC they gave 90-95% rF2 averaged about a 7.

I guarantee if first they joined open rooms ( Build 42-60 I had my room up 3 years ) and took the time to listen and learn and then do a few sessions they would have come away with better appreciation and give higher ratings, no doubt in my mind.
But that first lot of "professional" reviewers I got to say were ignorant and totally estranged to the reality of how good rF2 was even in beta.

I mean figure it out it was out for 2 years + before Steam but reviewers rated it like it was one day of first using. That's because it probably was ! lmao not funny not happy Jan not happy :x3:

But pCars they just drooled over a few edited screenshots and gave it 9 but now ? None of them would even call it a sim anymore ! So tell me how wrong were they then ? lol

Something about this isn't adding up.

When has this ever happened in the world of racing sims, beyond entire games naturally being de-listed because they're old?

Studio 397/MSGM can't afford licensing rights to Silverstone...

But somehow Reiza Studios, with AMS2, can.
As can RaceRoom Racing Experience.
These are two very niche racing sims that didn't sell a lot and have a very small userbase.

Silverstone is not an issue with those teams.
Only an issue with the company who is bleeding money according to quarterly investor calls, and who's board members all quit.

Who said they can't afford it?

Edit: as for Reiza and RaceRoom, well it's pretty clear that their current license is still ongoing so that's not much of an argument.

As most other users immeditely copy our steam installs to a spare folder and copy it back into my packages folder as required, i try to have as little as possible subscribed via steam.

I wouldn't tear apart this topic in the sense of comparison to other sims, this is not unprecedented but also very uncommon. I would just like to state that these news next to the recent news about MSG do not fill me with much (any) optimism. If it's a coincidence, it's a very unfortunate one. I was just about to get back to rF2 (thanks to the AI improvements mostly and maybe LFM) incl. getting some new DLC, but since the future of this project seems to be very much in the air, I will wait to see how the situation evolves before spending any money.

That is a unique problem with workshop content I guess. It is not a proper part of the game thus it can be subjected to different conditions. Not sure how Assetto Corsa handles licenses but that game is still up with lots of official tracks and you would be able to use it in its full glory even after delisting. Just like you can access pCars 2 content without limitation.

So what does it mean? If we unsubscribe from it, it's gone forever?
Yes - if you unsubscribe its gone - you will not be able to resubscribe.

But, you can copy the rfcmp file to another location on your hard drive then install it manually via the packages feature in game :)
