flickering light? simulated lightning?

just thinking outloud...

but would a strong, infrequent, flickering light place up high over some section of the track (with inclement weather and dark cloudy skybox) be capable of simulating lightening?

just wondering from the experiences people have with playing with lights whether this would be worth pursuing?

i dont want to learn 'how to make a light' from scratch just to find the effect is woeful.

any thoughts?

cheers

The lightning is easy to make, you would just put a mesh up(wall) and have an animation on it. As for the lighting up of the surrounding area I do not know. Lights afaik only come on at night and go off in the day. You could make a mesh and lay it over the terrain with a 50% alpha and have a white texture on it. but I don't know how it would work. If I was to experiment, that's the first thing I would try.
