Our motorsport photo of the day for the 27th of July features Marc Marquez negotiating the famous “Corkscrew” on route to taking the chequered flag at the Red Bull US Grand Prix held at Laguna Seca last weekend.

The blindingly quick Repsol Honda rider actually suffered a crash in qualifying, which handed Stefan Bradl pole position for the race. However, even after dropping to as low as 4th during the race, Marquez managed to edge out Germany’s Bradl by 2.2 seconds at the finish.

Marquez performed moves that many would consider to be well beyond his years, including a pass around the outside of MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi at the difficult Corkscrew section of the track. In winning the race, the Spaniard became the youngest ever back to back winner in the category, and did so at a track which he had never visited before. He also made history by becoming the first rookie rider to win at the notoriously treacherous Laguna Seca circuit.

The 20 year-old Spaniard currently leads the standings by 18 points following the ninth race of the season, and with nine more events this season, he is well on track to take the title in his rookie year! The young superstar is a worthy choice for today’s motorsport photo of the day.
