Non responsive controllers

At the start of last week, every single game on my computer stopped responding to controller inputs. I could start games but I could not map any controller settings, despite Windows 10 responding to all controller inputs.
It turned out to be a Steam setting.
To correct it, I had to enter big picture mode. I then had to... for each title...select manage game...controller options...then select force off.
Everything had defaulted to Xbox game pad settings.
Very strange.

Im gonna take a check of my settings here.

EDIT: I just checked - and found that I have unselected all Steam interference with my controller/wheel.
The Steam controller settings are "slightly" confusing - me think
