One more guy unsure about DD wheelbase...

Hi guys,

been playing Project Cars 2 now with a G29 for more than a year. Since last autumn (at least) I consider simracing a hobby to stay with me for years so I plan to invest in some pedal and wheelbase/wheel. Pedals will be the obvious choice of Sprints when available. Wheelbase-wise I'm almost sure about the SC2 Sport (alternative would be the Fanatec DD1). Funds exist as well as a good-enough 8020 rig. Next step then will be to start off into iRacing.

So the 'problem' is: I'm searching for a wheel that suits me. The simple choice would be to get a Ascher B16M(or L)-SC box and some rim, but I'm quite picky about that exact rim:
- Of course compatibility with the box
- Leather (No suede, no alcantara)
- D-Shaped
- around 30cm (the G29 is 27cm I think)
That narrows the choices known to me down to...Zero.
I'll ask Mr.Ascher about compatibility of his boxes with the Fanatec R300 which would be a logical choice but this rim is not mentioned in the list of compatible ones.

Does anyone know of a rim that meets all of the above requirements?

Completely alternative approach would be the Fanatec DD1 with the R300 and the Endurance Button Module. But I have to admit that the orgy of soft-/firmware updates necessary to base/hub/module as well as PC-software needed just scares me. Apart from the fact that the reviewers seem to find the SC2 to be a little better. Unfortunately I have no chance to test them, so I have to rely on those reviews.

Any input you could give me would be highly appreciated.

Your alternative approach of DD1 and R300 would be the more simple choice but if you are determined to go with the SC2, then we need to find a rim that closely matches the R300 with the endurance module.

One place that comes to mind is FiTech

It might be worth sending off a message to Carsten with your requirements as he'd be able to pretty much build anything you want. He has a page showing some of his previous projects which could give you some ideas.

I'd be surprised if the Fanatec R300 didn't fit with the Ascher button plates. The bolt pattern is the standard 70mm. Martin Ascher is a really nice guy and very helpful so I'm sure he'd respond to a query about it.

Agreed - the R300 fits the universal hub (which is what I have it mounted on) so it's a standard pattern, and will, I'd bet, fit.

That said, I've a DD1 - prices aren't as competitive now, as the DD1 and DD2 are looking quite expensive. I bought mine direct from fanatec before they hiked the price of the DD1 - and paid £916 delivered (Euro rate must have been in my favour).

I absolutely love it, and have never regretted it. Use it every day.

As a newbie to both the forums and Sim Racing I’d have to agree that this is a great idea and would be hugely useful to all levels of Sim Racer.

I‘ve been trying to research my next step from the G920 and YouTube is great but a resource with links and brief description of all the manufacturers and parts/repair companies would be a massive help. I imagine that may become even more useful as you work your way from mass production units like my G920 towards specialist, highly engineered gear but the information is equally useful to all as we learn and plan a potential pathway.

I know the hole pattern fits - it's just a question of if the rim's spokes or "flattened bottom" would get in the way. I also expect this to work but now as I'm getting older I have learned to not assume anything anymore:) Have sent a request to Mr.Ascher.

Regarding the DD1: Price-wise the two solutions (DD1 vs. SC2) are more or less the same to me. I would LOVE the Endurance Button Module but as written in the original post, I hate the idea of playing around with so much software (as I'm doing this all day anyway:)). This and the SLIGHTLY better reception of the SC2 by reviewers makes me lean towards the SC2. At the moment not too much stuff here in Europe is available (no Sprints, no SC2, no Ascher Button Plates, no DD1, not sure about other Fanatec components - I'm a little reminded of eastern Europe of the 80s) so maybe I'll go the Fanatec route anyway if they are able to deliver and there are still no signs of life from the SC2-side of things by then. It's really a close call between the two systems I guess.
