Introduction

Welcome to the the second running of the RaceDepartment Indy 500 in iRacing. Last season saw a huge turn-out of drivers that gathered to pick up the virtual bottle of milk. Lots of crashes painted the picture of the first half of the race; close fighting dominated the second half. This year we're looking to go bigger and better than last year, so go get that FREE RaceDepartment Licensed Membership and sign-up for this annual high-speed thrill!

Briefing

With two races in the bag we're going to Texas for our second and last visit to a 1.5 miler this season. Like at Charlotte we'll be driving 134 laps.

Considering the last two races, Iowa more than Charlotte, I'm confident we can run smooth long green runs. Mistakes happen. Remember that and keep your cool on the restarts and in fights. It's a long race and in a long race we want long green runs.

As always, safe your tyres for later in the stint. Let the hot shot go and catch them back up once they start wearing their tyres out.

Note that I am not available in the two weeks leading up to the event. If you have any questions, please contact Xosé Estrada. He'll help you out if he can.

Absences

Every driver that signs up for the competition is expected to join its events. Anyone that does not enter an event without giving prior notice of his absence will be replaced by a driver from the waiting list.

If you cannot participate please take the following steps:
  1. Start a conversation with Xosé Estrada and notify him at least 24 hours before the start of the race.
  2. Edit your sign-up info by setting it to 'Unavailable' at the Series & Sign-up page.
NOTE: 24 hours before the race the entry list will freeze and the staff will add and notify drivers from the waiting list. Absent drivers cannot rejoin unless given permission by the staff due to limited grid spots.

Briefing

The responses to the previous event were positive. We're glad that the series was well received in its first event.

To make sure we can have longer green runs we stress the importance of preparation and patience. There are 143 laps to race at Iowa, which means dodgy manoeuvres in the first couple of laps are entirely unnecessary. Please keep your head cool, let the race settle and unfold your plans when we've got a few green laps under the belt. Don't try to beat the field in every restarts!

To survive the race you'll also need a good prepararion, especially at Iowa. The track is small and the corner relatively sharp. You will need your brakes. The consequence of all this is that you tyres will wear out quickly. You can only counter this by driving carefully and letting the car roll through the corners. Additionally you'll need to be able to driver several lines, because you'll be side-by-side quite a lot. Practise these elements of the race.

Overtaking can be hard here. The lower line isn't always the quicker line and being on the outside can be dangerous as cars come up out of the corner. Practise your lines and practise overtaking. Make sure you can always hold your line, both outside and inside. We don't want people divebombing each other or people bouncing off the wall.

After the long green run to the finish at Charlotte I'm confident we can pull this off. All the best!
