The SimFeedback-AC DIY Motion Simulator thread

Hey guys. Thought I’d create a thread for those taking the plunge into this brilliant DIY project..
I will be starting mine soon and I know there are others thinking about it.. so feel free to share your knowledge and experiences so we can all enjoy this platform to its full potential. A huge thanks to the developers who have really knocked this one out of the park!

For all the internals for the actuator contact Amy - skye@ntl-bearing.com
She can supply everything you need. Just remind her you want the ends of the shafts chamfered and make sure she sends the right sized ball screw - we have had a couple of issues reported. She is very helpful though and the cost is pretty good.

Huge thanks to @RowanH for writing a comprehensive user guide which can be accessed here - https://www.rowanhick.com/sfx-100-build-and-running-guide

In addition, @anton_Chez has contributed a list of post numbers for some of the important settings etc..

I will try to keep this page updated with links to source the parts in other parts of the world. Just post whatever links you have and i'll add them here.

Please note: Not all the parts listed below are essential for the project. For the essential parts refer to the original shopping list.

this a realy good start but i see unshielded cables and the most important thing is the shielding of the motor and the connections of the shield

If you are talking for the ribbon DB25 adapter cable, yes, probably will be covered with aluminum tape, but the rest of the wiring will be shielded.

@_hagenaar - I can't see the reduction to 90mm dia. causing the printed parts any problems, it just translates into a 10% increase in shear load where the motor mount meets the fixed bearing mount. The bolt fit is very snug in the motor mount holes so there is no movement between the parts.

So according to this i want to mount the front actuators just in front of the main upright.....

But the P1 pedal deck mount is in the way, moving it far enough forward will compromise my pedal position :/ Anyone else got this setup and if so how have they mounted it?

@hazardpro I moved the brackets to the inside and then secured the profile on top of them using the usual corner brackets from underneath. I did cut the profile down later though so that each piece lined up with the outer edge of the bracket.

@_hagenaar : a couple of questions if you don't mind.

1) you mention shielding the motor. Do you mean a grounded cage around the motor? Or do you mean shielding the motor power wiring, or both? I can understand shielding the wiring.

2) Re attaching both ends of the shield to ground, would you run individual grounding wires to each motor position? ground the entire rig?

nope you have lot me lol

How can you mount those brackets on the inside? Its impossible, due to the width of the pedal mount, they can only go on the outside?

Any pics?

I made a typo there but edited the post later. i mean only shielding the cable. as the motor is made from metal it is already a cage. the shield is not a protective conductor but only to make a path for the high frequency signals (that cause EMI) to flow back to the source (the drive). where it should be connected to the metal housing of the drive which is connected to ground/earth

2) Re attaching both ends of the shield to ground, would you run individual grounding wires to each motor position? ground the entire rig?
Grounding with the green and yellow wire (Protective Earth) is only for safety. to make sure you don't get a shock

Can someone help me out with what parts of the build does the shield-100 replace?

Also keep seeing loads about shielding cables but (I’m trying to get through the 300 odd pages) I can’t seem to find why some are having to do this and some are not.

what is the issue exactly for those trying to shield and why are some people not having to?

thanks in advance guys.

I think the shielding is for EMI issues.. There is currently no solution for the 10khz whine

Just realized i got the 90ST-M02430, and not the 80ST-M02430, and pritty shure it’s too late to return them any idea on what to do?

the 90ST-M02430 is the one mentioned on the shoppinglist. so you are okay.
i am trying to se if can fit the 80ST-M02430

Shielding motor cables is indeed for EMI. It for example helps preventing ramdom usb problems and so.
EMI mutilates signals
