Those who sign here petition the United States government to secure funding and resources, and begin construction on a Death Star by 2016.

A lot of them have good intentions but bottom line is anyone can make one. All 50 states had petitions to secede with about 10 reaching the 25k requirement and nothing has come of it.

Regarding the "death star" it´s not that science fiction.
(obviously it won´t be a replica or even similar but the concept is the same.

Space weapons are weapons used in space warfare. They include weapons that can attack space systems in orbit (i.e. anti-satellite weapons), attack targets on the earth from space or disable missiles travelling through space. In the course of themilitarisation of space, such weapons were developed mainly by the contesting superpowers during the Cold War, and some remain under development today.

I feel it's an embarrassment to the human race just how many of those fools think it's serious AND want it!
Someone at some stage even worked out how much it would cost, how long it would take...

The estimated cost of building a fully operational Death Star is approximately $852,000,000,000,000,000. It would also take an estimated 833,315 years to complete it.

Thankfully though we wouldn't have enough metal on Earth to build it!

Sad news:

The US government has rejected a petition urging it to build a "Death Star", claiming it was too expensive, conceptually flawed and did not fit in with the policy of not blowing up planets.
