PC2 what are "Formula X" cars supposed to be?

I initially believed these to be Formula E cars at first(which would have been really cool), but they are definently combustion engine cars. Are they based on somekind of realworld formula prototype or is it just pure fantasy?

It's SMS take on what they would like to see for a 2018 Formula 1 car. Keep in mind, this was designed back in 2015 so this was before the larger tires of 2017 and some of the other changes. With that, it does appear F1 is moving similar in some aspects.
