What is the smallest wireless emitter / receiver?

Imagine you need to send just one input from your steering wheel to your PC, for instance, a key or button press, and you need to do this wirelessly and with the smallest device possible. There are some very small controllers than can be used or hacked for this, such as the 8bitDo, but they are bluetooth. That means that the device must be activated before it detects any button, unless you know a way to wake it via software, which I have not found. Another solution could be a mouse that uses a wireless emitter and receiver such as Logitech mice, with their unifying. However, the smallest wireless mice aren't as small as I wished (they use a aaa or aa battery), so hacking one is not the best idea. Do you know of any other solution that is not ultraexpensive.

You can get an overview on Wikipedia. With the microPython loader you can implement a web server using python and read the button state from there. Or you use ble. In both cases you need some kind of receiver on the pc side.
