2022 FIA Motorsport Games Switch to Assetto Corsa Competizione

After having run Gran Turismo Sport in 2019, FIA announced a switch to Assetto Corsa Competizione for the 2nd instalment of the Motorsport Games. The event will see esports racers worldwide compete against each other on the digital version of Circuit Paul Ricard.

What are the FIA Motorsport Games?

From 26th until 30th of October 2022, the FIA Motorsport Games will determine the nation with the best racers. Across 17 disciplines, every national FIA-backed sporting authority may nominate drivers for each discipline. Example competitions are Auto Slalom, Endurance, GT or Rally. All of which happening around Marseille where Circuit Paul Ricard is situated.

Amongst the 17 fields is an esports competition which allows every nation to send a representative digital racer. More than 80 sim racers are expected to compete, all of which need to graduate through a knock-out system to participate in the finals.

Assetto Corsa Competizione for 2022

“The FIA Motorsport Games are an exceptional opportunity for Esports competitors to compete for medals alongside traditional race drivers,” said FIA Esports Commission President Niroshan Pereira.

“Working hand in hand with (National Sporting Authorities), we strongly believe that the FIA Motorsport Games Esports discipline can help to introduce competitors from non-traditional motorsport countries and unearth stars of the future."

“We are delighted to be able to work with Kunos Simulazioni and use their Assetto Corsa Competizione product at this occasion. It is one of the most popular esports titles in the industry, as well as among our ASNs, so being able to collaborate with them is great.”

Marco Massarutto, co-founder and Executive Manager of Kunos Simulazioni, said: “We are very pleased to be the choice of the FIA for the Motorsport Games, as with Assetto Corsa Competizione we raised the bar even higher than with Assetto Corsa, bringing the thrill of real racing simulation to a very high number of countries, that we are looking forward to see competing in an event where each of the sim racers can make his or her nation proud.

“We love racing and sports, and with Assetto Corsa Competizione each player has the opportunity to prove that skills, focus, and dedication can make the same difference in Esports like when racing on a real track.”

Esports competitions at the 2022 FIA Motorsport Games will take place between October 27th and 29th.

Sorry to say that, but you are still just a "gamer" Your fancy plastic wheel doesn´t change a thing

Welcome to the real world
What is that supposed to mean, & why have you gone off, on a ridiculous tangent that does not contribute any substance, to the topic. It’s about the quality of the sims, of which acc is one of the best, if not the best. No one here is claiming to be a real pro, or saying anything like that. Get a grip of yourself, & think twice before you post pathetic & aggressive dumb comments

It's about time they fixed that. What serious sim racer is playing on console to begin with?
Those that can't justify or afford the extra money for an expensive gaming PC.

ACC, AC, F1, PC2, Dirt Rally 1 + 2, are all available on console so there's no reason a "serious sim racer" cannot be console based.

We should be equally welcoming to all, regardless of whether they use console or PC.

I assume the main prerequisite for this was that your sim has a current officially licensed version of Paul Ricard.
The Paul Ricard version in ACC is already outdated, though. The only game with an up-to-date version of Paul Ricard is probably F1 202x.

Until such time as we risk actual physical injury crashing our cars in sims, we're all just gamers no matter how much you spent on your setup. (And I say that as someone who spent quite a lot...)

Use a beefy DD servo without the emergency button and that could become true!

What makes you sure they'll use the PC version in the first place?
True! I think it is likely that they will use console ACC to level the playing field. Otherwise gamers with better PCs will have the unfair advantage?

Some of the comments here are embarrassing, many of us started out on consoles and some people don't always have the funds to buy a powerful PC.

We talk about segregation in society and it's being highlighted on this thread, should be ashamed of yourselves.

Whatever is behind this decision, it's a positive move that they chose ACC. Speaking to a guy who plays GT7 (and races in real life) he says the cars have some weird behaviour with oversteer, not played it myself so unable to comment.

I'm a big fan of ACC for many reasons, should produce some great racing.

Now let's keep the rest of the posts civil and on topic please, after all we are all adults.....

Kunos absolutely maximizing ACC. Such a fantastic job at gaining exposure, delivering content at a fair price and at the right time to keep momentum.

If I understood it correctly, they are going to race LAN, as in, the simulators they race in are at Circuit Paul Ricard. So I'm hoping everyone gets the same hardware to play with.

Kunos said they'd update Paul Ricard for this event. What that exactly entails however, not sure. Might only be banners. Might be a complete overhaul.

Wondering if any e-sport categories compete in VR?

And congrats to Kunos team, well deserved.

A positive step forward. Congrats Kunos, looking forward to the new USA content

Everything about this is great for ACC and simracing as a whole. There's only one big problem with this announcement: Paul Ricard :p

Ahah, tribute to the Gran Turismo player who will manage to be also champion on ACC because for most, they will be disappointed
They need to have divisions so every racer could have a possibility winning. Otherwise you have a handful of people in the whole world who can win so what's the point in entering.

All previous LAN events were held on PC. I don't see a reason to change in favour of a platform that may be even more difficult to handle. They most probably have some custom version of the game for this kind of events and it is well known that console are harder to work with. Why bother with those?

It would indeed be the best idea to make divisions, however, for there to be no cheating on the hardware or software settings (steering wheel, graphics, etc.), it would have to be in person. This is already much less interesting economically, as X number of events have to be organised to reach the final. However, we are in 2022 and streaming these events with players who may or may not have a community would make Sim Racing even more attractive (after all, it doesn't change anything, they are only games, not reality lol)

According to a reliable source, the next events will take place on Nintendo Switch. There are even rumours that the Game Boy with the magnifying glass will be used for the final.

How likely do we think it is this also means they might get FIA licenses involved in the game?
