4 Reasons To Be Excited About EA Sports WRC

After months of waiting, EA Sports has finally revealed its first official WRC game in trailer form. Announcing much about the game, here are just a few reasons to get excited - and one to be skeptical about.

Earlier this week, rally fans got the news they have waited months for. Indeed, having taken over the official WRC licence at the start of the year, the world expected EA Sports would release a new title in 2023.

Rumours of different release dates and secretive influencer trips lead to this week’s trailer and game announcement. EA Sports WRC will release on 3 November with those that pre-order the game gaining access 31 October. But is it worth spending your hard-earned money on a game that currently only features a trailer?

Here are four reasons to get excited about this new game – and a further reason why it is worth remaining sceptical.

EA WRC Graphics Look Great

As with every brand new game trailer, the first thing to note about EA Sports WRC is its graphics. Previous Codemasters rally games featured graphics from the developer’s in-house Ego engine. Essentially an engine created in the mid-2000s, some may call it outdated and indeed, recent rally games never popped graphically.

This newest take on an official WRC title however will use the far more recent Unreal Engine, renowned for its rapid and realistic lighting calculations. In fact, one can see just how much more contrast is available in the newest trailer compared to previous games. Furthermore, the colours look softer and more true-to-life rather than the boosted saturation of old.

Despite many gamers’ concerns about Unreal’s anisotropic filtering and sometimes pixelated motion blur, this upgrade is certainly something to get excited about. In fact, flying through Finnish trees and powering within Greek dust is sure to provide more immersive lighting than Dirt Rally 2.0 or WRC Generations.

Content Aplenty in EA WRC

One of the main positives of Dirt Rally 2.0 was the scope and detail of vehicles available to drive in the game. The title featured everything from 1960s low-power endurance rally racers to modern machines built to tackle any stage with perfect precision.

It seems this variety of models is also coming to EA Sports WRC. In fact, the reveal announced a whopping 68-strong car list at launch. An in-progress list is currently available on the game’s website and already features some great cars. Group B monsters, a whole host of modern feeder series models and obviously, the hybrid heros currently tackling Akropolis Rally Greece will all provide fun.

Unlike Kylotonn Games’ versions of rallying’s greatest models in history, every car features immaculate attention to detail in DR2.0. As a result, one can surely expect the same level of care in the upcoming game. Every single one of the 68 models present in EA WRC will be as true-to-life as the team can make it.

New Stages To Explore

Car content is certainly important in rally games, but perhaps even more important are the stages. In fact, rallying is all about have one shot at getting the perfect run through a stretch of complex road.

Whilst recent Codemasters rally games have featured somewhat uninspired locations, surrounding and layouts, this new official WRC game will bring brand new stages to the fray. In total, a massive 18 different rally locations – every 2023 WRC round – have been announced for the game. The final 19th Central Europe Rally will join as a post-launch free update.

Having to create all-new stages, this is the perfect opportunity for Codemasters and EA to overhaul their location creation process. Looking back, it is no secret that KT Games and the previous WRC franchise have had the edge in level design. So perhaps, the new official designers can draw inspiration and produce unique road sequences in EA Sports WRC.

EA Sports WRC Game Modes

In past titles, EA Sports and Codemasters have become the leaders in single player experiences and game modes. Indeed, the F1 Series’ My Team campaign and recent Race Replay mode provide brilliant long-term fun.

It seems a lot of that knowledge in offline progression-based racing is transferring to rally. In fact, a pair of game modes announced for the new WRC game are catching the eyes of many. Moments is essentially a copy of the F1 Replay game mode from F1 23 in which scenarios from the 2023 season will be available to replay for rally fans in the hopes of over-turning results.

wrc-builder-screenshot-16x9.jpg.adapt_.1456w-1024x576.jpg

Builder mode lets you create your own rally car. Image credit: EA Sports

The game mode that truly grabs headlines, however, is the Builder mode. Here, players will essentially become the team leader of a fourth manufacturer to join the Rally1 regulations. Taking a basic body design and building it up with various engine, suspension, hybrid and brake options, one can create their ultimate rally racer. Once your car is ready, you compete in the World Rally Championship in the hopes of winning the manufacturer’s championship.

Be Skeptical of Dirt Rally Physics

Despite all this, there is still one reason to approach this new game with a level head. The physics engine of EA Sports WRC is being built from the existing Dirt Rally 2.0 model. While certainly a commendable game as a whole, the physics of both it and its predecessor felt compromising.

Find out what Overtake’s Champion Joe thought of the EA Sports WRC reveal trailer.

In this sense, the gravel physics appeared fun whilst the tarmac handling featured an odd floating sensation that ultimately resulted in grip being overly effective. Indeed, driving on asphalt was like gravel with the grip turned up. Combine this with the inconsistent ice of Monte Carlo and you have a game that can feel unsatisfying to drive.

Hopefully, the work EA is doing to the engine will provide a starker difference in overall feel between snow, gravel and tarmac. However, until gameplay trailers and reviews release, it is surely wise to remain sceptical about EA Sports WRC. That said, if you played Dirt Rally 2.0 and found its physics enjoyable, then you will surely find this title just as good, if not better.

Comments

I will await reviews and feedback from fans before deciding.

Some of the stage designs look an awful lot like prev WRC releases IMHO. I assume, that all previous assets created - belong to the franchise. So all stages and art assets would have transferred to EA/Codies.

Tarmac physics (in DiRT Rally 2.0) was shocking, like many have also stated. Codemasters are the kind to milk a license, and do very little work post launch. Yes F1 has seen updates, but this is no g'tee WRC will get the same resources thrown at it. I'm pretty sure F1 as a franchise, has a much larger number of buyers and a bigger budget to release post-launch fixes.

If WRC features stage degradation, this will be a nice feature if the physics are improved over DR2.0. We also don't know what is going to be hidden behind the pay-wall, but I'm cautious with the game looking good value for money at the release prices quoted.

Fingers crossed we get a decent game, which is polished, and not a game that is a polished-turd lol.

;)

""""""""""""" EA WRC Graphics Look Great """"""""""""""""
What???
Funny how the article actually says nothing about how good the trailer looks but actually about how good UE is... (which UE btw??)
Because the trailer shows not-great graphics.

The only thing that gets me hyped is the builder mode. Sounds really good (but not even shown).

RBR is the king of rally sims. And with ever-improving modded physics and an ever-expanding roster of modded stages... it will likely still be for years to come.

However...

EA WRC could still be a great title to play, if it's well-executed and polished. We could use a fantastic rally video game with enjoyable, intuitive physics but also single player modes and the graphical and sound polish of a 2023 game. I'm hopeful.

Perhaps most of all, I hope that a lot of the content is not simply recycled from previous DIRT Rally titles. Start comparing car lists, and it looks suspiciously like this might be the case... but I hope I'm wrong.

I'll give it a chance. Also, early access starts on my birthday (October 31st), not that it means anything, but it will be cool to try a new game on my birthday.

Hopefully, it won't be a disappointment, but since even though it's an EA title, it's the people behind DiRT Rally who are behind it, I'm cautiously optimistic.

I don't get all the "Codemasters stages bad - KT stages good".
The stages in DiRT Rally and DiRT Rally 2 was actual real life stages. Not just some familiar landmarks with fantasy roads around like the WRC games of the past.
plus, they looked absolutely brilliant, the Polish stages reminded one of 19th century landscape paintings (no kidding and meant as a serious compliment), even on a not very advanced PC like mine was and still is. The Kyloton stages got better and better but never looked as great as did Dirt Rally

Dirt 4 was a trash game
ok here's one not so popular opinion  - Dirt 4 isn't that bad, as we famously believe
for me, I really love that I can procedurally generated new track every time. over and over again :inlove: make it fast or slow, short or long...
what was actual Dirt 4 problem was that they promised us something like Dirt 2.0 simulation and deliver somewhat arcade handling.
and the simmers never forget !
:p
we revenge them with bad reviews

agree
as often in life, nothing is black and white
some of the Dirt rally 2.0 are just gorgeous
some are not.
but agree that WRC Generations in general are better.
just if there's no that weird/obsolete KT graphic :alien:

Why they do not implement VR from the beginning is a riddle and in my opinion a wrong move.
This "we will add it later on" is like "it will be an experiment".
Sorry but i meanwhile too many experiments liek this so i prefer a proper product.
Maybe it's because only the PC version will support VR, so they decided to focus on the features that will be shared between all the paltforms, but I'm just guessing.
:)

6 F2 kit cars, that is cool!

I agree. Three of them will probably be the ones we already had before (306, Ibiza and Golf), but I wonder what the other three could be. Could we see the Megane? Maybe the Felicia? S1600 is also interesting. Could be the FWD rallycross cars from previous games, but that would leave us with one spot still free. S2000 class is also there, so maybe they could bring back the Grande Punto S2000 and the 207, they already have models that they maybe could use, maybe with some improvements.

Celica GT-Four would be amazing to have, but it seems there are only five spots in Group A. DiRT Rally 2.0 already had five cars, so either the car is not in the game at launch, or it's replacing one of the cars.

Considering the fact that some cars from DR 2.0 won't make it (Rallycross, Rally GT), we might see some new older cars. I'm very hyped to see what they are.

As for DiRT 4, I like it, but it's definitely living in the shadow of DiRT Rally and DiRT Rally 2.0, which are better titles. Though I wish DR 2.0 had some features DiRT 4 had, like ability to make your own livery in-game.

Ah, good ol' RD comment section, now I recognize you. Was almost worried there after the announcement article :p

They can't even hype. Hype is when everyone's raving about the stuff. This on the other hand is barely mediocre. :)

My dream is that someone like Reiza or Kunos got the WRC deal !

But unfortunately true SimRallyfanslike me are a tiny minority in this vast market of ArcadeRacers that no company seems to care about because there are no money involved.

Pretty sad actually.

After 19 years I still get my daily fix of rally with RBR Vanilla.

PS

If the new WRC product from Codemasters tops good ole RBR I am having my Fanatec pedals for lunch

Comment Part1:

Hello I am atiwrc, but use my brother account, because RD not allow two account from same IP address
I can collect my car list for EA WRC game, with my brother yesterday.

Firstly I hate this game name, I don't undestand why not named it to WRC 2023 or WRC 23 like F1 or Fifa games.
They speaking about 5 vip seasons for preorder, and they have wrc licence for 5 year....
They want only one game for this period? We don't know that we will have other cars or tracks/countrys in the next years....

If I understand well we have 78 cars when it realease, so I made a list, but waiting that codemasters surprise me with something, hoping that they won't choose the easy way it won't just be copy paste.

I try to fill the list and choose some model from Codemasters last games.
In some class I write the first, but sometimes write the last appereance of the car beetwen the [] signals
[D1,D2,D3,D4,D5] means Dirt1,2,3,4,5
[DR1,DR2] means Dirt Rally 1 or Dirt Rally 2

If I don't find enough model, I write some opportunites.

WRC

Ford Puma Rally1 HYBRID [NEW 3d Model from CM]
Hyundai i20 N Rally1 HYBRID [NEW 3d Model from CM]
Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 HYBRID [NEW 3d Model from CM]

Citroën C3 Rally2 [DR2]
Ford Fiesta Rally2 [DR2]
Hyundai i20 N Rally2 [NEW 3d Model from CM]
ŠKODA Fabia Rally2 Evo [DR2]
ŠKODA Fabia RS Rally2 [NEW 3d Model from CM]
Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 [DR2]

Junior WRC

Ford Fiesta Rally3 [NEW 3d Model from CM]
UPDATE: There is a news, that Jon Armstrong confirmed 5 new cars, on of them is this, but this is on the list before this news.... :/
--------------------------

World Rally Car 2017-2021

? [NEW 3d Model from CM]
? [NEW 3d Model from CM]

Both 2 cars will be new 3d model, because they never made a car from this class
Opportunites: ford citroen hyundai toyota
I think one will be the Ford, they made and has lot of Ford rally cars in the last games.
I think the other will be the toyota or the Hyundai, because that manufactures was now in WRC IRL,
on the other hand, we have only the Celica ST205 in the last years (and some PP and baja cars) from Toyota. New Hyundai R5 will be in the wrc2 class, the older version was in D4 DLC, but no Hyundai in DR2
I don't think that they make the citroen, but who knows, we have c3 r5 and citroen ds in DR2.
--------------------------

World Rally Car 1997-2011

? citroen c4 wrc [DR2]
? Ford Focus 01 wrc [DR2]
? Ford Focus 06 wrc [DR2]
? Ford fiesta wrc 2011 [DR1]
? Mini Jhon Cooper Works WRC 2011 [DR1 (presentation style model)]
? Toyota Corolla? [NEW 3d Model from CM]
? Citroen Xsara wrc? [NEW 3d Model from CM]
? Peugeot 206 [DR2]
? Skoda Fabia wrc [DR2]
SUBARU Impreza 1998 [DR2]
? Subaru Impreza 02 wrc [DR2]
? Subaru Impreza s14 wrc [DR2]

This is an intresting category because they named it to 1997-2011. If we can see the previus category they named it to 2017-2021, (the Hybrid wrc cars used from 2022, so this category can have cars from the 2021 season.)
The 2.0 wrc cars used first in 1997 and the 1.6 wrc cars starts in 2011. So I think they want to add some 1.6 wrc to this category, not only 2.0 wrc.
I choose the fiesta from DR1, and maybe they can use the Mini too, with some little changes.
Other easy solution is that they rework a little the ds3 rx from DR1 to ds3 wrc 2011 model.
On the other hand if they named it to WRC 1997-2016, they can use the Volkswagen Polo 2015 model from DR1, and this car win the championship 4 times... We don't know what WRC Promoter ask to do.
Toyota Corolla wrc was in the latest wrc games, so maybe the Toyota or the WRC Promoter want this car to be in the game.
I choose Xsara wrc for the other slot because that car won some tittle in the wrc era and they can modify easily from D1 Xsara RX model to wrc model.

Other Opportunites wrc2.0:
307 wrc: We have the model in D1, but i think they prefer the 206 wrc instead this.

Escort wrc: I think nobody like that car, except me.
Cordoba wrc Evo1 or Evo2/3: Little chance, i think not choose this car, but we have the Ibiza in F2 and RX.
Accent wrc Evo1 or Evo2/3: I don't think that Hyundai Motorsport want to remember for this car results...
Octavia wrc Evo1/2/3: I really like to see this car with a good model in rally game long time ago, it was a really good car for national championships in the early 2000's (Czech, Slovakia, Hungary, Deutchland, etc...)
But after that they choose the fabia, and skoda rally lineup promoted the Fabia RS Rally2 with Fabia wrc in ERC Barum, I think they not model this car. :(
Subaru S12 wrc: I think with the 98, 02, and s14 the Subaru wrc line up almost completely covered. 03/04/05 very "same" as 02.
The 06/07 model, the S12 and S12B has a little different front and body, but I don't think they want to model it.
I remembered that the D1/2/3 has a Gr.n style 06 model from this car, and rx model, but the D3 has wrc style look like car, which I did not remember...
Lancer wrc: Both 3 different style lancer wrc not was the most succesfull car in WRC history, so i think they don't make it. V-rally creators choose one of them some years ago.
Suzuki wrc: I think not made this.

Other Opportunites wrc1.6:
citroen DS3 wrc: Maybe if they not fill the list with old models.
hyundai i20 wrc: Maybe if they not fill the list with old models.
Toyota yaris wrc: Tested but not raced in so no chance.

UPDATE: Citroen Xsara WRC and Mini WRC confirmed by Jon Armstrong
--------------------------

Rally2 *

? Mirage, Peugeot 208 or MK7 Fiesta R5 [DR2]
? Hyudai R5 [from D4]

I don't know what this Rally2 means, old R5 cars which not raced on WRC2 category todays or some Rally2kit (old r4kit) cars?
Rally2kit was awsome with Audi or Dacia!
Proton Iriz R5 was in latest WRC games from kyloton, but why? Because not really raced in real life... The Mirage too.....

--------------------------

Rally4

? 208 R2 [DR2]
? Adam r2 [DR2]
? Fiesta R2 [DR2]
? Fiesta Rally4 [NEW 3d Model from CM]

I think they choose the Fiesta MK8 Rally4 because they already made the Fiesta MK8 rally3, and it has same carbody.

Other Opportunites(if they not use all old R2 car):
Peugeot 208 rally4: It looks cool in real life, so maybe they can do it.
Opel Corsa rally4: We have some opels in the last game and adams is outdated, so maybe they can made it.

UPDATE: Fiesta Rally4 confirmed by Jon Armstrong
--------------------------

NR4/R4

? Subaru NR4 sedan [DR2]
? Lancer Evo X NR4[DR2]
? Lancer Evo 9 R4 [D2] UPDATE:Colin Mcrae R4 [D3]

I think they choose the evo9 from Dirt2, i think no other option, maybe a Hatchback Subaru (N14/N15) R4.

UPDATE: They choose the Colin Mcrae R4 rallycar[D3] (confirmed by Jon Armstrong), I don't know that has a real R4 specification or only named to R4?
--------------------------

S2000

? 207 S2000 [D1]
? Abarth S2000 [D1]
? Fiesta S2000 [NEW 3d Model from CM]

I think they will made this car, modifying the fiesta wrc 2011 a little.
Skoda S2000 was in Milestones rally games.
Satria S2000 was in Milestones rally games.
On the other hand if they made the Mini country man wrc, maybe they modify it to Mini S2000 (if i know well they has the RRC model in s2000 name but with 1.6T engine)
--------------------------

S1600

? Swift S1600 [D1]
? Clio S1600 [D1]
? C2 S1600 [D1]
? Corsa S1600 [D1]
--------------------------

F2 Kit Car

? 306 [DR2]
? golf4 [DR2]
? seat ibiza [DR2]
? Clio Maxi kitcar [D5]
? Xsara kitcar [NEW 3d Model from CM]
? Felicia [NEW 3d Model from CM]

I pick the Xsara kitcar and the Felicia randomly. Felicia was in cmr1 it will be cool to see again, xsara kit was in some games nowadays.
Other opportunites is: Octavia, Hyundai, Escort, Astra G, Megane, Almera. Megane also a strong option, some new game has it, but I dont think that they want it if they have the Clio Maxi.

WRC Builder Car
WRC2 Builder Car *
Junior WRC Builder Car

Intresting category, but I only prefered it for Rally2kit and for wrc2.
--------------------------

If you can see the old cars before the 90's it looks like a DR2 copy paste...

All in all we have 14-15 new car from the 78 model, if they want to fill the list with cars from old Codemaster games. The 3 Hybrid wrc, the Fiesta Rally3, (and maybe the Fabia RS Rally2, and ERC champion Hyundai) was the need to do category because the wrc licence (and following nowadays trends/new cars).
So maybe we have 10 new car model from the almost 80. Is it enough or not? Comment your answers...
