Gran Turismo Movie: a Trailer and a Date

As some of you may be aware already, a Gran Turismo movie revolving around the now abandoned GT Academy program has been in the making for quite a bit. Well, a trailer has been released today, together with a date: August 11.

The scenario revolves around an apparently extremely romanced version of Jann Mardenborough's story, winner of the second ever edition of the contest, and now established pro racing driver. It will show Jann's life from childhood to being a professional race driver. The movie seems set in current years, which, combined with the fact that characters interpreted by Orlando Bloom and David Harbour don't sport the names of people involved in the program back then, makes the use of Jann's name instead of creating a fictional character a bit weird.

This is supported by the trailer showing footage of the current game, GT7, which has never been used for a GT Academy competition. The game footage itself is taken directly from Gran Turismo 7 trailers, at least from what we can see right now. Outside of gaming and racing, the movie trailer shows we can expect family drama and a love story.

Underwhelming reception

Overall, reception by the GT community on social is underwhelming, with many expecting a dud and criticising it for the number of clichés already featured in the available footage. The fact that the movie's logo is using an obviously incorrect font compared to the game's logo is also perceived as a lack of implication from Polyphony Digital and a low effort from the production team to get to know the subject.

With a bit more than 3 months before it airs in cinemas, we are curious to know how many of you are planning to go watch it, and what you expect from it.

The difference being, japanese manga is more popular than ever, specially in the west, while hollywood is basically bankrupt at this point, because unlike manga, or some exceptions, they don't give the paying audience what they want, instead, they take every chance to lecture said audience.

Hollywood lost the plot with "the message", the lecturing tone, the over politicization, the depressing undertones, the cheapening of everything: plot, dialogues, character build up, world build up, music, special effects, attention to detail.

All made in order to churn out movies fast and cheap like a cold factory instead of like an artisan that loves and prides on his craft, movies are no longer special and no longer do what should be doing the best: entertain and creating heroes instead of destroying and deconstructing them substituting them with mary sues.

Japanese manga is popular because the exotic setting, and because how Japanese are perceived in the west. Once you have read manga for enough years you start to get fed up with cliches, repetitive settings, cookie cutter MC's. But they are as rotten and unimaginative as hollywood, but there is those 3 to 5 masterpieces every 10 years that really blow your mind like no hollywood movie has done in the last 20 years.

After some years of reading manga you start to pick certain to my liking very disturbing undertones like misogynist situations, nauseating over sexualization of everything female, even child. Woman treated as mere decorative and status objects everywhere, hypocrisy, everything being about getting social position and money...

After that you get fed up with spineless MC's, after a lot of build up anticlimactically evil enemies lifes spared just to make look MC better, of girl harems in where the girls are even ok with it and help each other in being treated like a piece of meat. The blind acceptance of slavitude, of the childhood friend that never ever wins, of the best girl always loosing because the girl has her own personality and the small, boring, spineless, clumsy and submisive girl winning.

The hotspring episodes, the beach episodes, the cultural festival episodes, the 4 or 5 panty shots per episode, the oversexualized 8 year old girl that ends up in a relationship with the MC but it is ok in the mind of the mangaka san because that girl is an 400 years old elf.

Every female on the story fawning over the spineless with no personality beta looking MC just because "he is so kind", the female character that has been secretly in love with the MC because he once gave her an unbrella or picked he erasing rubber from the ground 8 years ago.

That stupidity that every MC is the best chef ever and every food is always so delicious and every Japanese food gives a foodgasm to every secondary character from a lesser world, "the rival" that always get's away with almost everything and ends up with the girl but it is ok and the MC can live with being a looser cuckold because "as expected of my rival". T

he MC that fight as never before, overcomes the impossible and he is about to win looses because anti plot armor as he always does, the 100+ episode manga story that goes nowhere, the Japanese army being described in a way that they seem better prepared and armed than the USA army.

The 40 something teacher grooming his own 16 year old female students and it is ok because it is wholesome somehow in the mangaka mind and they love each other, the MC that is so OP that could annihilate the entire planet but still act submissive and obey to any command from any authority or whimsical noble.

The slave girl that chooses keep being slave of the MC because she loves him because he is so kind, every female on the story loving to cook, clean, doing every house chores for the MC while he does nothing at all but to parasite her.

The OP MC that has money enough to build a castle made of coins used as bricks and still goes to a dungeon to risk his life for more money and social position, the MC being always the smartest guy in every room and still being as naive as a 4 year old child.

The MC that can't kill any human even if that person is a serial murderer and a child rapist, but has no problem with killing every single innocent living being on the planet to level up, the story recreating itself in brutal rape scenes that crush your soul for weeks and after a lot of build up when the MC can take revenge for it they spare the rapist life.

The 70 year old MC reincarnated that he is ok with dating a 10 to 16 year old girl because he now has again a 10 to 16 year old body, the arranged marriage by the whimsical MC's grandfather, every female in the history being the most handsome, the best student ever, from a wealthy family and with a bust size that would make blush a pronstar.

After you have read enough Japanese Manga it becomes so boring and predictable as any hollywood production, they don't lecture you which is a massive plus for them, but they BS you a lot, and once you have read enough you can't avoid feel disgusted by patterns that you can't avoid noticing. There is this fresh exotic wholesome halo effect over everything Japanese that makes it so enticing for us westerners, but it is all facade.

If you scrape under the surface, once you learn to ignore the face value, manga feels almost as hollow as modern hollywood movies. I'm far from a woke or white knight kind of person and still manga daily offends me. But at least it is still better than chinese manhua stories about CEO's that do as they please and cultivation.

Politicization is nothing new in Hollywood. Some of my favorite movies are 50's Sci-Fi (Forbidden Planet, The Day The Earth Stood Still) and they are about as in-your-face and direct with the political and cultural message of their time as you can get!

Neither are cheap, rushed, flimsy movies a new thing. The great movies we remember from past decades are generally the diamonds in the rough; the few actually worth remembering. So many pulp movies have been churned out every year since the beginning of the movie industry. Just like with music, there is still good stuff being made but you have to sort through the piles of lesser things to find it.

I am laughing so hard at the responses in YT. GT fanboys are beyond hilarious.
This is going to be another one of these modern, politically correct movies full of cliches and "messages", but they're ecstatic simply because....it's named Gran Turismo. If it wasn't named GT they wouldn't even bother or say "that looks so bad".
Seriously, give these "guys" a bucket full of diarrhea and vomit and slap "Gran Turismo" on it, and they'll stick their head in, lick it clean and ask for seconds.

FYI to the haters, watch the movie, if you don't like it, you'll die. No other options :D

It's just a movie.

I remember when Assetto Corsa was new, the haters loved it so much because the graphics were beautiful, I hated it because the tire model was horrible, now AC is the best, but then it wasn't. But haters said then that I was wrong ... I wasn't. Tire model 10 is good enough. This is important, movie not.

NO, if the haters don't want to watch the movie then they should spend no time (that they'll never get back) doing so... and if everyone watches it Polyphony might be encouraged to do another, god forbid.

Oh yeah the other point you made... AC is not the best, that crown is still on the head of GTR2 (with GTL-GTR2 fitted)

And don't forget to get the Coffee mug, the shirt, the special edition face flannel and towel set, and the obligatory soap-on-a-rope!

I think this is a great positive for sim racing and motorsport in general. It may be a little bit "Hollywood" in places but if we are honest with ourselves our love of sim racing and cars was helped by growing up with games such as Ridge Racer, Burnout and GT series.
It's also set around the true story of the academy which may be a story worth telling. I also know people that worked on the production and they spoke very highly of what the production company were trying to achieve.

So maybe we should try and be a bit more positive. It could be awesome, it could be terrible but it may do our peculiar hobby a lot of good in the long run...
