Now in mid-April, Studio 397 decided it would be the perfect time to release its newest update for rFactor 2. The simulator has certainly made strides in recent updates and this particular changelog is no different.

Whilst the headlining act must be the first simracing representation of the Gen 3 Formula E car, the update brings countless improvements throughout the sim. From modding support to bug fixes, it mostly appears to be a case of housekeeping until you reach the AI section which has seemingly been overhauled.

Formula E Gen 3 in rF2

rFactor 2 has long been the definitive Formula E simulator. The original car and many tracks have featured in the game since the series' origins. And with the Accelerate esports series putting simracers in the electric single seaters, it's no surprise that the sim now has the 2023 model.

The Gen 3 car is a million miles away from the Gen 2 car concept. It's a lightweight, small chassis made to look rapid on TV coverage. It skips and dances over street circuit bumps and appears to be agile in the corners. One thing racers will have to get used to is the lack of physical rear brakes which are indeed modelled in rF2.

This year's Q1 update brought many hybrid powertrain improvements for the BTCC cars, and this latest Q2 update focuses on EV functionality. UI and HUD elements will allow players to keep track of their energy usage whilst brake usage will be a difficult skill to perfect in order to regenerate in an efficient way.

This is something the AI is also trained to do in a long list of offline racing improvements.

AI improvements galore

Whilst an AI that can manage energy in the Formula E car is impressive, the way it now battles is even more so. Throughout the history of simracing, very few titles have produced capable AI in racecraft scenarios. But it seems rFactor 2 is on the right track.

The latest update brings in many changes to how the AI interacts with other cars. From making better decisions on the brakes to actively looking for better exits when making its way through traffic. According to the change log, the AI will now think about the danger involved in overtaking manoeuvres on the brakes. Whilst it will freely go side-by-side on the straights, it may decide to back out of a move on the brakes into a corner. This should produce fewer incidents where previous versions of the game would become blood baths.

The new improvements certainly work well in multiclass scenarios. Faster cars treat slower classes with respect as they work their way through the field. Not trying to send a risky move up the inside, the AI now often backs off into a corner to carry momentum and make a move on corner exit. This is what real life prototype racers in IMSA and the WEC do when battling through GT traffic.

All in all, this update looks small when compared to the major overhauls of recent releases. But the changes address issues that will now give the game great offline playability. Furthermore, with more and more great updates coming to rF2, it shows that the game is finally nearing a place where the developers are happy with its current state.

What do you make of the latest rFactor 2 update?

One of the biggest updates in a long time, loads of AI issues being addressed we been waiting for such a long time. So many other useful updates and physics extensions.
Can't wrap my head around it, still so many people only see downsides here.
Thanks Studio397 for you great efforts, still making progress.

Why does every news article have onto descend into a war of, my sims better than your sim?

I want all sims to do well.

iRacing might get rain?
GREAT!

ACC getting new physics?
GREAT!

AMS2 getting mods?
GREAT!

Come on people, it like a bloody school playground .
Totally agree. I play most of the them so want them all to do well. This is a great update, and am looking forward to the ACC one on Wednesday. If AMS2 fixed their multiplayer I'd play more of that. And I also like the latest cars in iRacing ( formula ford rocks ).

You know that most studios hire contractors, aka "modders", to make content, right?
REIZA hired a modder to update the tracks & I hope cars. S397 CANNOT alter property of another company. They only offer it for sale via the rF2 store. Reiza has been planning for over two years to eventually update the cars & tracks they released into rF2, but the workload for AMS2 prevented them making any real progress. So last year, I THINK around spring, they hired someone to freshen up their content.
Regarding the older dashes such as that in the GT3 Porsche. There have been statements from Devs that acknowledge how dated they look, but the task is too time consuming at this time for them to move forward with revamping so many cars. The New HUD is supposed to provide clear information to alleviate some of the annoyance about the car interiors.
Just here at RD, there is an entire page of HUD downloads(I'm not counting the broadcast overlays) you can try. Many are for Simhub, but there are several there that work natively with rF2. Remember when changing HUDs, you have to exit and relaunch rF2.
edit again. Tiny Pedal is free and has over a dozen customizable widgets that display anything from Relative Position to Rake to Radar etc.

They did for a bunch of cars, the odler F1 Mclaren, the USF 2000, Nissan GT500 and some more.
The problem for some older cars is the standard they were build to at their time, it sucks, but its not realistic to expect those to be remodelled for basically free any time soon, they are just way too many (its also not only on rF2 where you have content build vastly different in terms of visuals, thats true for basically all games that exist over a longer period).

And the Reiza content isnt done by them, they hired modders for it on the forum.
Nissan was released under ISI, USF was on the edge so developed mostly under ISI IIRC. Updates were mostly PBR shader related IIRC. McLaren M23 wasn't released in the best state IIRC, I only remember that I uninstalled it and kept the other two McLarens at that time (which look decent to this day!). I say IIRC too much.

april 2023

McLaren M23 v1.53
  • General visual update
March 761 v2.12
  • General visual update
sure, you talk without any clue.....you can t be trusted
Okay, so these updates (don't know what was updated, but all right) made my argument worthless. Wow, I am sure that makes their outdated PREMIUM PRICED DLC content that should be held to a higher standard but isn't look so much better.

Like come on people! So many excuses given for for profit entities. If something is not up to the current standard and people are asked the same price for it, it's the people's problem and they shouldn't be complaining, because wow, the poor for profit organization, let's give them some slack, we shouldn't expect to keep their paid content up to date?! IT'S IN THE PRICE, the keeping up to date! I am sorry, I understand that some people love rF2, it feels awesome to drive, I agree. But being a fanboy (sorry for the F word) makes people completely and utterly blind? Like if I am a fanboy of something it's AC and ACC, and I could give you a two hour presentation about what's wrong with them. For each.

Sorry, my laptop was stolen today and I needed to vent somewhere...

Simhub is awesome but does not work together with Gsync.
That's why would it be vital to have a decent native HUD...
Sorry to say that but this new one is still miles away from what other sims provide.

Sorry, what do you mean by doesn't work with gsync?

I have SimHub overlays running on my ultrawide with gsync enabled and not had any issues...

Nowhere, that I recall, are any of the DLC sold with free lifetime updates. You are buying 'As Is.' If they make improvements and don't charge for those, then it is a win for the consumer. They DO make improvements to either keep current users satisfied or pull in a few new users. Neither of those scenarios are cost effective. I'm not going to spend more money on rF2 simply because the Porsche suddenly looks cool & modern. I WILL spend more money on rF2 if they continue to fix core issues and add features & content.

Fanboys spend more time dumping on other titles than enjoying their favorite tittle

its sadly a very common behavior on the internet nowadays

If I go to the in-game store of a sim today, and purchase two premium content cars for 4.99EUR each from the same developer, should they come with various level of quality? I think not.

I often feel like sim racers are the most demanding and least demanding people at the very same time.

you can't ask for same quality with 2017 and 2023, simple.
