1923 Sunbeam Grand Prix - French and Spanish Grand Prix winner in 1923

Third installment from Tours 1923 and the final car, along with the Bugatti and the Voisin, that managed to finish the race.

The hardest model to make so far because there's so little info available. I had to base most of the cockpit on the 1922 car because that's all I could find good hi-res pictures of, although I did manage to get a screenshot from a YouTube video of Tours 1923 that showed the steering wheel was very close to one in my pictures so...

I've been waiting for this since way before the world became a strange place to live in.
It looks superb!
Genius.

Cheers Rufus, and everyone who's been so nice in the reviews. Spent all week fixing little things and checking I hadn't forgotten anything and then as soon as I uploaded it I realized I'd forgotten the most recent normal map for the tyres .

Will release an update in a week or two so if anyone finds anything that needs fixing or improving please do let me know. All constructive criticism gratefully received.

Little vintage porn for my fellow pervs. I read somewhere that Segrave actually drove his car from the UK to Tours and then back again after the race:

First of all, I really love it! It's beautiful! :)
Also a minor request for future update. Could there be different textures for rims, seat leather colour and maybe steering wheel's black parts? They share same texture (black.dds) with some other bits (see all red parts in picture).

Yep, no problem. Didn't we do this with the Voisin? My fault, I can't resist trying to save file-size by reusing textures. I'll set up some separate materials.

Would a template be any use? I tend to think people can use Content Manager to extract textures but let me know if it'll help.

Ah, yes we did! I'm a sucker for small file-sizes too, so small txDetail textures just to change colour of the rims and leather are enough.
I personally don't need a template, cause like you said, Content Manager does all sorts of magic tricks. :) But that being said, maybe someone else could use one?

Hello Nicecuppatea. Thank you very much for these glorious 1923 mods. We are going to race them on Fonteny this weekend, but during testing I have learned that the BOP is very much as it was in real life :D Sunbeam too stronk! Or the other two, especially Voisin is too weak. Will you consider making a BOP'ed version of the cars so we can race them against each other without everyone choosing the Sunbeam?

I'll have a go. I saw someone advertising the race on Reddit and it did cross my mind that whoever gets the Voisin probably should bring along some sandwiches and a thermos of tea :). Give me a day or two and I'll see if I can get something workable.

Ye that was me. One of our members already BOP'ed them and he might contact you with the updated data, then you can see if that is something you can use or rather make your own :D For now we will use a class system so the strongest drivers gets the slowest car ;-)

I just tried giving the other two cars the Sunbeam's gearing and power and it seems to work, only obvious difference is the better aero on the other two gives them a slightly higher top speed so they might need reining in a bit. If you've got something you're happy with I don't mind you sharing it or I can put it all together in a special BOP pack and upload it with full credit to the person doing the BOP.

Got a little update ready to go but I'm having a weird connection issue atm where I can't seem to upload any files larger than about 20mb. Normal service will be resumed...eventually...I hope.

Nicecuppatea updated 1923 Sunbeam Grand Prix with a new update entry:

1923 Sunbeam Grand Prix v1.01

Yes! My upload problem seems to be fixed.

Little update to add:

- distinct textures for wheels and cockpit leather
-small adjustment to inertia values
- correct tyres normal map that I forgot after spending days checking I hadn't forgotten anything
- removed spaces and capitals from skin names
- a few more skins in national racing colours

It's difficult to find any good photos of vintage racing colours so I looked up the official colours on Wikipedia and the actual colour...

What are the odds of you making a road car from this period? One of my dream AC mods would be the gorgeous Bugatti 57SC Atlantic. AFAIK you can only drive this car in Test Drive Unlimited with a mod.

Is that the one that sold at auction for something like $47 million? Would love to make one but I want to get as many of the Tours cars done as I can so I'm starting on the Fiat 805/405 now. Looks like it's going to be even harder to find details on than the Sunbeam was, type 'fiat 805' into Google and you mostly get loads of stuff about tractors :cautious:. Got enough to make a start though:

Nicecuppatea updated 1923 Sunbeam Grand Prix with a new update entry:

1923 Sunbeam Grand Prix v1.2

Update to add the vintage driver, plus...

- added more polys to the steering wheel and fixed a shading issue there
- moved fuel tank lower
- fixed blotchy tyre texture and redid the normal map
- added LODs C and D (still too chunky)
- added working oil pressure gauge
- matched tyre changes to those on the Voisin
- lots of changing stuff and then changing it back and then changing it again.

INSTALL NOTE: As before if you want the driver textures install manually to your ...Program...

Looks like it's going to be even harder to find details on than the Sunbeam was,

You may have this already:

"The Tipo 805/405 racing engine measured less than two litres of capacity, had two camshafts and a steel cylinder block welded from two parts with four cylinders. With a Wittig compressor, the motor developed around 130 hp at 5,500 rpm. This gave an impressive 66 HP per litre - pre-war, atmospheric engines with a large litre did not exceed 15 HP per litre of capacity! The installation of the Roots compressor, which was active throughout the entire rev range, increased the engine power to around 140 hp, or at least 71 hp per litre. The speed of the speeder reached dizzying 230 km / h.

The heart of the car was set on a steel, ladder frame with a wheelbase increased to 2.72 meters, which is 23 centimeters longer than in Tipo 804/404. Torque was transmitted by a 4-speed manual transmission, a multi-disc clutch and a reinforced propeller shaft. On the back a rigid axle is used on very short, semi-elliptic leaf springs, on the front a tubular structure with springs passing through the axle. The whole was completed with drum brakes supported by an oil pump."

Good luck

Good luck

I do have it already but thanks all the same. I always make a spreadsheet for the specs with a separate column for each source. Comes in handy but then you get things like three different sources for the overall weight which give three different weights.

More sources are always welcome though, sometimes you get a clearer picture and sometimes you just end up even more confused
