2019 Formula One Austrian Grand Prix

If LeClerc is given the win then it sets a dangerous precedent for F1 whereby the guy in front can back off into a corner , invite someone through and then turn in on them and get them penalised .

If you're Leclerc, do you really want to get your first win with a penalty? Personally, I would say no.

Verstappen clearly was faster and would have won anyway. As for the pass, it was a bit rough but that was never worthy of a penalty, unless Formula One has become Formula Wimp. Max had the inside line and he positioned his car in a way that forced Leclerc to back off or risk a collision. Clever move. It's called racing hard. Sadly, F1 today is so sanitized that people forget what real wheel-to-wheel action is.

To me, the fact that Leclerc didn't back off showed that he knew Verstappen had the faster car but could not accept that he was going to lose the race.

If the FIA penalizes Verstappen for this, they might just as well outlaw all forms of passing except with DRS in a straight line.

The fact that it takes so long for the stewards to come out with a decision is just a confirmation that it will indeed be a penalty. They just want the track cleared from all "fans" before making the decision public.

It's also a sign that there's some heavy pressure coming from Liberty Media. They know the fans are pissed by the penalty to Vettel and they are afraid of the fans reactions of Verstappen is also penalized.

I'm saying that's what will happen , not what happened here exactly . But it's still a similar thing . The moment Leclerc backed off and Verstappen overtook him LeClerc lost dibs on the racing line and so it was up to LeClerc to back off and if he didn't then he had no right to complain about being off track . Senna and Mansell used to love tussels and would have never whined about the right for this and that . If one of them went a bit off track on a corner theyd have called it ' a great fight ' , both of them .

No indeed not, but if they apply the letters of the law what is he supposed to do? Say he doesn't want the win?

Correct. Verstappen needed to be patient but he wasn't, need to accept the consequences of it.

He expected Max to give him space, just like it was a lap earlier.

No, his other overtakes were fine. It's just in the heat of the moment that he again hits someone.

It seems threads about Formula 1 races are off topic in a place called racedepartment.com. From now on, they better be covered at legaldepartment.com.

There is no scenario where two cars are side by side and one should simply concede the position. If under any circumstance a car that is racing for position is expected to simply move over THAT is not racing. Dont say Charles was in an undefendable position, it was the exact same the previous lap and #16 made it stick and CLEARED max. Max knew it would be the same so he just shoves him off, dosen't even look in his mirror. If senna was leclerc he'd have been fuming.

Edit: actually no, senna would have just held his line, wrecked both cars then say "he should have left a space."
